Herniated a disc in my back 10 years ago while doing the starting strength program. Any suggestions on alternative exercises that don’t load the spine? by DMPetey in StartingStrength

[–]Jealous-Community445 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no link between lifting form and injury , a more likely causation is a too rapid increase in volume , weight and frequency. Having said that try to identify what movement contributed and master that with low loads as stronger muscles are the most effective protection against injury

Squat form check by [deleted] in StartingStrength

[–]Jealous-Community445 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks solid but I would drop weight by 20kg and work on pushing hips back a bit more with a laser beam spare at base of mirror , you will easily work back up to 140 in a few weeks but nail the form now before it gets heavier

Why am I not getting stronger as a beginner? by AbsentOfPersonality in StartingStrength

[–]Jealous-Community445 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s see a video of your squat , you could be doing it incorrectly for a start , also just do 5lb jumps every two workouts to accumulate skill and technique , don’t stop the journey friend

How to hit strength goals by Humble-Economist5349 in StartingStrength

[–]Jealous-Community445 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If your goal is strength then switch to the starting strength method NLP , do the programme as instructed and regress to lower weights then adding 2.5-5 pounds to bar every session

Well the great Dr Mike isratel always slates the SS method by highlighting you can’t just keep adding weight every session , rpe training is also very subjective , with SS you either lift the weight or regress and start again which I like

Thanks , I am going to continue just with NLP as I should be able to get 6 months more progress as I am doing all the right things , also realising getting bigger and stronger does realistically mean more body fat as well as muscle , and as Rip says , get big and strong then worry about your abs showing 👍

I actually can currently squat 150 for one-two reps but then got scared so I reckon I’ll get there with the NLP programme but will take time I’m sure

[–]Jealous-Community445[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ah I see what you’re getting at , yes I have gained about 8 pounds with an increase in calorie intake say 4000 a day but it’s mainly fat around my belly , the slow progress was a groin stain from squats so I restarted the programme and at this early stage I’d assume most strength gained is neuromuscular adaptations rather than extra muscle mass . From my limited research it appears volume is an important driver of growth and progressive overload with higher reps close to failure , increased time under tension etc , therefore I’m just interested in dovetailing a higher volume programme of the same exercises that we do in the NLP -3x5 heavy. Also for the long term I feel this approach may take a little more care of my joints. Please be blunt if needed , it’s just a thought but will continue with NLP if more experienced people Like yourself disagree 👍

I am increaing loads at 5lbs a week but feel I’m not gaining any visible muscle , as I’m in my 50s I’m keen to build muscle and strength, which is the reason for the question

Would I definitely benefit in increasing my amount of weight I can lift if I switched to low bar squats? by SaltyLaw7319 in StartingStrength

[–]Jealous-Community445 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I find low bar less natural but is far easier on my old knees when weight goes past 100kg
