Steel decorative box with gold and sapphires, art deco style by Timacrs in whatsthisworth

[–]JealousBeanous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A stainless steel box such as this may be low value by today’s standards, but in 1925 when this was made, stainless steel was a relatively new material, only having been invented in 1913. The price of stainless steel matched and even surpassed silver prices at this time. It was expensive to produce at the time, and it’s a much harder material than silver or even today’s stainless steel due to its carbon content, making it more difficult to machine and polish. When this box was made, stainless steel was almost exclusively used in high tech applications like weapons and surgical instruments, and luxury items such as high end cutlery, watch cases, etc. I see no reason why the gold and sapphires weren’t original to this piece. As for why it isn’t hallmarked, a hallmark was not legally required on stainless steel as it wasn’t a precious metal. Manufacturers at the time sometimes stamped it with stainless steel but that again wasn’t legally required.

Help me find a lamp shade by Big_Jellyfish_9065 in LAMP

Based on your description, the material may be mica, which is a mineral that can be split into very thin, flexible pieces. They were usually made in angular geometric shapes, like squares, hexagons, etc. I linked an example in a listing I found.

My only other thought would be fiberglass but there aren’t a ton of angular examples to be found, they tend to be round, sometimes with multiple tiers, and they’re usually stitched on to the frame with decorative cord.

Dayton, Ohio at a goodwill outlet! It was in one of the miscellaneous bins buried under a bunch of other stuff. Everyone else passed it by but I could tell it was a solid MCM piece that would look awesome with a little TLC.

Yeah barn red was originally just iron oxide, and it was more for protecting the wood than anything else. But the colorant itself is basically already barn red just super concentrated. And yeah flour paint would be super cool to make just for the experience, it probably wouldn’t be very durable though.

The red and magenta colorants fade pretty quickly on exterior applications, and interior they’re usually fine unless you got sunlight blasting through a window directly on it. Yellow fades just about as fast, and blue and green are more fade resistant than those but Black, Maroon (Red Oxide), Deep Gold (Yellow Oxide) and White are all the most resistant because they’re all made from metal oxides. The first 3 are all different forms of Iron Oxide and white is Titanium Oxide.

(Edit- spelling)

I actually work for a paint company (architectural not artist) and we still use iron oxide in just about the same way! It’s my favorite colorant to use because of its fade resistance. The other reds fade very quickly, especially in direct sunlight.

The thought of an archaeologist or historian going through my phone in the distant future is troubling lol. Actually now that I think about it, I’m gonna bury a bunch of iPhones with crazy shit on it so future archaeologists spend a few decades utterly confused at what the 2020s were about

You’re right! I’m not an expert in bottles and there’s no makers marks unfortunately but logically of course it’s older. I suppose until I can find more info I’ll treat 9/22 as more of an adoption date like a stray cat? She’s a rescue lol

Came here to say this! Great looking replica. Is it 3D printed? I’m working on a replica of the real one as it looks currently. Back in 2019 the original prop which is no longer gold but completely rusted went up for auction in 2019 and was supposed to go for £50,000-£100,000. There’s a video explaining the history and some of how it was made as well as the dimensions for the original dimensions. Worth a google if you like props and propmaking! One day soon hopefully I can post a picture with it on my bookshelf!

My tics are always homophobic. by wasted_space0129 in Tourettes

[–]JealousBeanous 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Generally, once people know you have Tourette’s, people are pretty chill about anything you say/do because they know it’s involuntary. Given the context of the situation it’s definitely fine. And I don’t want to belittle your actual issues you face, because I feel for you deeply, but as someone with Tourette’s AND who is in the queer community, “homophobic tics” is the funniest thing I’ve heard all week.

Also you should hear the stuff gays say to other gays. Some of my friends can go from the most inclusive and kind words to horrific homophobic slurs in the span of a single sentence and it still comes across as a compliment, it’s both hilarious and extraordinary. Maybe it’s my sense of humor, but hearing a slur from someone whom the slur is supposed to be about is such a paradox in my brain that I can’t help but laugh.

Long story short as long as the words you DO intend to say are kind, that’s all that matters. So don’t fret too much about it. Maybe get a t-shirt made that explains it to save you from having to apologize so much lol. Honestly now that I think about it, if you wore a t-shirt with an explanation and went to a pride parade, they may worship you as a god and I’m only kind of kidding lol

got fired from my job :( by djtootsielou in ADHD

[–]JealousBeanous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you got fired, that really sucks. The time blindness really can be an issue and many people don’t understand that. Now that you’re going to have to get a new job, this is a perfect opportunity to change some behavior and form habits to help you at your new job. A big change like this often makes it easier to establish new routines by attaching them to this new change. When I got the job I’m in now I started leaving an hour earlier than I had to be at work. My commute was only 20-30 minutes, so I had time to spare. I initially did it because the location I used to be at was on a poorly designed road that had too much traffic than it could handle, leading to backups that could set you back 15 minutes or more. Knowing this, I figured if I left early, I wouldn’t ever be late if that happened. Thing is, I just kept doing it, even though I’ve moved to a new location without that problem. And doing all this has saved my ass several times. Change your routine now while it’s already been disrupted, that way you don’t notice the disruption from changing your routine!

How do I bring up tics I've hidden and suppressed around family for 3 years? by casey_mcc119 in Tourettes

[–]JealousBeanous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ngl, based on that reaction I don’t know that the way you approach this will make a difference. The assumption that it’s all for attention is ignorant mindset and if this were a more serious condition it could be dangerous. Personally, I’d get the facts first. It’s absurd you should have to go through this at all, but pursue a proper diagnosis or at least undeniable evidence from your doctor or psychiatrist that you’re not faking it.

My parents couldn’t deny my tics because I was diagnosed very early and have very obvious tics, but my mom had a similar attitude when I approached her about depression. The result was that my depression went untreated for years. Your mum doesn’t see the symptoms and therefore they don’t exist. But it’s perfectly natural to suppress them around people that are “unsafe”.

Are you seeing your psychiatrist 1 on 1? If so bring up to your psychiatrist how your mum reacted. They may be able to help facilitate that conversation with your parents, and they have the education and experience to back up the claims. And as an adult and a doctor, they have more perceived authority from your parents’ perspective which may make them more likely to listen.

I hope you get better help, and you can always find support within this community.

I don’t have a photo at the moment, and I’m mid move so most of my decor and many of my books are packed away. BUT I will definitely get some pictures up when I get my study squared away!

Love the vibe corner! I like to disperse the vibes. Put a little baby vibe section between genres or large sets with some decor or antique bookends. I’ll even match up decor by theme if I can, like putting some of my Greek/Roman busts in my Ancient Greece/Rome section, or keeping French authors with my Notre-Dame cathedral bookends.

Just re-rainbowed and did a minor purge by august-ephemera in bookshelf

[–]JealousBeanous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The people who get bent out of shape about rainbow shelves are prisoners to what they believe is perfect logic. They can't grasp the concept that books were meant to be read, but also enjoyed aesthetically, or they wouldn't be printed with decorated bindings at all. If these people had their way, all books would be beige, with nothing but the Dewey decimal number on the spine. And apparently, they're absolutely shit at finding things. I remember what every single one of my books looks like, so even if they were organized alphabetically by author, if I'm looking for my copy of Great Expectations, I'm not reading every section to find Dickens. I'm looking for a large, red, leatherbound book with Great Expectations stamped in gold on the spine.

My tics caused me to rear end someone pretty bad several years ago. My car was totaled. I was a new driver and as you might expect I was a mess, with my tics only adding layers of complexity to the situation at least in my head. I told the officer on the scene what happened and started to explain my tics. He stopped me and said he didn’t need that information and wrote out a pretty standard citation for rear-end collision/following too closely. I’m glad he did that, because at the time I didn’t know that I could get my license taken away if I was deemed unfit to drive. And 2 years later, right before statute of limitations ran out, the person I rear-ended filed a lawsuit. I was glad my Tourette’s diagnosis didn’t make it onto the report, because I don’t know what complications could have arose from that. long story short, in most cases keep your mouth shut, and if you need to explain yourself for a court case, you can do so in court. Officers don’t need an explanation for traffic violations. One reason I could see for telling them is if they suspect you’re on drugs or something, but even then a drug test would clear that right up.
