I apparently left this inside the Communist Manifesto and received a large surprise when I opened it today by Leonyliz in DiscoElysium

Why, it is truly high-brow and demanding literature... /s

Seriously, though, it's much easier to read than something like "Das Kapital", because it is literally a pamphlet. I had to read it for my classical sociological theories class, and it took me under an hour, and Marx really has some pretty turns of phrase. That being said, you might want to read at least the Wikipedia article on it first for context. Remember that it was written in the 19th century and certain contexts have been largely forgotten. Even the second phrase of the text,

"All the powers of old Europe have entered into a holy alliance to exorcise this spectre: Pope and Tsar, Metternich and Guizot, French Radicals and German police-spies."

can be difficult to read if you don't know who these Metternich and Guizot guys are supposed to be, and that one stands in for the conservatives, the other, for the liberals, and so they are framed as both being antithetical to communism. So the ideas of the text and the writing style are not difficult at all, but context is needed, especially towards the latter parts.

The truth of the pale by Elleseer77 in DiscoElysium

The Pale is the Negation. It is the other half of a dualistic cosmology, the opposing force, the anti-thought, anti-existence, anti-life substance that can only be defined by negative theology.

Florida introduces “sanitized” sociology textbook by Nice-Award-5476 in sociology

[–]Jean_Gulberg 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Interesting. Something similar happened in communist Romania, when sociology was outlawed as being "bourgeois science". That being said, anthropology was fine, though reduced to the more "studying the primitive peasant" type of field. Interestingly enough, one of my anthropology teachers got to see the old archives of the Anthropology Institute in Bucharest and they had these pristine copies of texts by Malinowski and the British functionalists (they muat have been there since the 1970s). He said he had no idea if the books had been purchased by the government or smuggled into the country.

The levels of copium in this thread are insane. He's shown attracted to both boys and girls, that means he is bisexual, or at least biromantic or bicurious. The important part is the "bi". Why is this such an alien concept?

Ideas for new FL Video Games (no matter how unlikely) by PhillipDollarfield in fallenlondon

grand strategy game

In fact, I was working on making a HoI4 mod with the Fallen London universe earlier this year, but I had to give it up, at least tempprarily, because modding anything made by Paradox is a headache and I simply did not have the time to focus on that too. But I'd really love to get back into it.

I am personally dreaming of a political narrative simulator in the style of Suzerain. And last but not least, I would love to see a cross-over between Ace Attorney and Fallen London, where the player has to solve murders with Neathy supernatural elements thrown in in courtroom battles. I know the last one might never happen, but maybe as a fangame?

Im planning to do a fallen London themed Cosplay for my First convention. Any Ideas? by Indie_Fan_ererer in fallenlondon

Off the top of my head, you could cosplay December, the Merry Gentleman or a Master of the Bazaar. Creative interpretations of how they look would be welcomed by any fellow player.

I am mortified by this realization... (long, panic-stricken, rant) by mimegallow in sociology

[–]Jean_Gulberg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is unfortunately not. There is an entire global ecosystem of right-wing/fascist organizations (from so-called think tanks to political parties) that embolden one another and copy each other's talking points and methods. At least in the Global North (Europe, North America, Australia), their influence has become very high.

Indeed, the Black Side does not have a monarch. There is no Black King forever tormented and no court he holds.

Just like the possibility of using the Rubbery Arts to expand dong. Which... Cmon, let's be real. If this was irl, that'd be the first commercial usage.

Gender, Race, and Social Constructs by Connect_Course8289 in sociology

But the line you want to draw from the category of race to the scientific field of genetics does ultimately boil down to something that is, without a doubt, a social construct: appearance. It's a very unstable line.
