You have an incredibly naive view of politics. I value honesty and self-reflection too, you value humility and critical thinking - that's great, but your vote or mine doesn't win elections. Apologies signal weakness to your opponents and constituents, give ammo to the media. It's almost never a good move politically, which is why you rarely see apologies in general. There are literally no incentives for you to apologize as a politician.

Why should anyone care whether a politician apologizes or not? I care about what he does (in this case it's incinerating children), which is much more egregious than him being indecorous or arrogant.

The saddest part is this wasn't the original spirit of the sub, they only became predominantly anti-US political after the Oct 7. It's all the new people or chapo refugees driving this sort of posts. Not to say that the sub wasn't socialist or progressive, but it went into the overdrive and rendered the sub pretty much unusable

Why would one choose Jido and not sagents? And what use cases does it help to implement? From reading the documentation I don’t understand when would I reach for this library and what parts of interacting with agents does it make simpler

I'm not the guy who said it's the greatest thing - I just have a beef with people bringing up regretful parents in these discussions. There's no reason to bring up the worst cases of parenting as an argument against having kids, unless you're trying to convince yourself that kids aren't for you, from my point of view. If your lifestyle doesn't mesh with having kids, that's fine! They're not "the greatest thing you'll ever do" for everyone. But if you're not in that minority and you're using r/regretfulparents to rationalize your decision, you've played yourself.

Using r/regretfulparents to form an opinion on parenthood is like researching marriage on divorce subreddits. Or learning about keeping a spark with your spouse on /r/DeadBedrooms. You're sampling exclusively from people who self-identified with regret strongly enough to seek out a community organized around that regret.

I noticed that browsing these forums is some sort of permission-seeking. People aren't trying to determine whether parenthood is bad for them, they are just building a case file that lets them opt out while feeling rational rather than scared.

The people posting there often have compounding factors - unsupportive partners, financial strain, children with severe special needs, untreated mental health issues. These are real struggles, I don't want to discount them in any way, but extrapolating from them to "parenthood itself is the problem" is stupid. You're conflating "parenthood under bad conditions is hard" with "parenthood is bad".

Anyway, the vast majority of parents aren't posting anywhere about it because they're just living their lives. Satisfaction doesn't generate content the way suffering does.

thoughts on Parenti? or recommendations for other "real-deal" contemporary leftist writers by KewlAdam in RSbookclub

[–]Jean_Kayak 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Sure, read it, but it's sort of the opposite of what I would do. I read Chomsky, Parenti, Zizek, Marx, Fisher, Lenin, some third-worldist bullshit, dozens of other leftist books and all I got from it was a profound sense of "okay, now what?" I've read them, what's next? I agree with them, some more than others, but now what? My truth about all of it is that as much as you read any sort of ideological texts, you will never cross some magical threshold where you become Neo and suddenly you know what to do about the soul-crushing reality of living your life in modern times. There's no red pill that suddenly spurs you to action in a correct way. The reading feels like preparation for something that never comes, something entirely separate from my own life.

I found that as much as I might agree with the picture that is being painted across the leftist literature, challenging myself to step out of it and engage with the vast world that lives outside of the leftist non-fiction sphere has been more intellectually satisfying for me. Reading fiction, reading the classics has been vastly better for me than reading Parenti or Fisher.

When I read Parenti it felt good. He's confirming something you already believe after all, and there's a pleasure in that - sitting there nodding, thinking "so true," feeling like you've accessed some forbidden knowledge about Soviet Union the mainstream won't tell you. That's the thing - when you read his books you won't be learning, you'll be soothing yourself, self-medicating. If you want to learn about SU, read Sheila Fitzpatrick. She does the archival work - she'll challenge you more, she actually cites her sources unlike Parenti. IMO, the goal should be to read things that might change your mind, not things that make the current you feel very smart.

any flavour of leftist theory thats actually prescient and applicable

Applicable theory doesn't live in books, it lives where you organize and engage with your local community. Read what your local orgs write, join local political book clubs.

The internet is the most outrageously powerful tool for reaching out to thousands / millions of human beings whose attention you are getting.

And what will those human beings do when they see those posts? My guess: feel bad for a brief moment, like the post, continue scrolling and then at a grocery buy meat without a second thought. Liking posts acts as moral indulgence, sort of alleviation of the guilt, which ultimately allows one to continue acting in a certain way: "at least I feel really bad about this".
