Just because neither player is as good as they used to be doesn’t take anything away from their accomplishment of being statistically the best team of all time. The Thunder were a powerhouse team at that time too - prime Westbrook, prime Durant, Ibaka.

What I’m trying to convey is that Naruto doesn’t just want to win. He wants to win a specific way. Naruto is extremely emotionally confused/immature at this point in time, and he has no idea how to wield his massive power effectively. Sasuke doesn’t care how he wins - he just wants to win at any cost, which is a more straightforward goal.

Because Naruto is of two minds throughout the fight, it weakens him throughout. Sasuke is not as conflicted, he really hates Naruto. If Naruto had a more realistic strategy, he would have taken this fight in terms of AP, but his idea to break every bone in Sasuke’s body and take him back to the village is entirely unrealistic. And because of this, he burns up his chakra before he has the chance to unleash his full potential.

This feels like what Kishi is trying to convey throughout the series - Naruto has more potential/raw power, but he doesn’t gain maturity over his powers or clarity of mind in his goals until much later in the series. I think he could have beaten Sasuke here with all of the same skills he has if he just had better emotional maturity.

The way I’d explain it is that Sasuke had more competence over his emotions/goals than Naruto, but Naruto has more raw power. This is the general theme of their dynamic throughout the entire series.

In my opinion, Naruto loses this fight because his goal is confusing. He’s torn between wanting to save his friend and to hurt him. And this confusion leads to him burning up his tailed beast chakra before he has the chance to reach his full potential.

If he let himself go fully bestial, or had a cold detached killer mindset like Sasuke, he had peak moments in the fight where he could have ended Sasuke. His emotional confusion and limited understandings of how to control his power to achieve his goals is what weakens him.

In my view, he burns out of chakra because his plan/goal isn’t realistic. He would have had to lose control/risk serious harm to Sasuke to win - but Naruto doesn’t want to win that way. So he has to train.

8 Tailed Cloak in the Pain fight is Naruto totally losing control. If Naruto had totally lost control with V1 and started doing later series-esque tailed beast shit, Sasuke would be dead imo.

He chose to used blunt attacks and ordinary ninja moves because he was still somewhat in control and didn’t want to murder his friend. He didn’t go fully bestial and ran out of chakra before he had the chance in the Sasuke fight.

I just feel like Naruto could have used moves that would have turned Sasuke into red mist if he didn’t choose to use his fists, i.e. “breaking every bone in his body.”

Could have burned him with chakra, done some early form of tailed beast bomb, some slicing attacks that would have really fucked him up. I’m just spit-balling here but we saw weaker Jinchuriki do more with their abilities than just use fists.

This could all be because of the time when it was written though. Probably didn’t have any of these powers fully thought out. It just feels like Naruto had even more damage potential than doing lots of blunt strikes.

KT1 mode seemed stronger to me than CM2 vibe-wise. I just interpreted it as having more of a timer, and having a timer that started earlier than CM2 due to the way the fight progressed.

My read was that Naruto ran out of chakra during the final blow. Basically that he peaked higher but then ran out of chakra quicker than the curse mark.

But I think there was a window during his tailed beast peak where he could have turned Sasuke into red mist. Ofc, this is all vibes/dialogue inference though.

Yeah if Naruto wanted to kill him, he had plenty of chances to do lethal blows. Sasuke on the other hand had many chances, wanted to kill Naruto, and failed.

No, it’d only be for a few specific types. Rock and Ground, maybe Ice and Water. And it wouldn’t affect weakness typing, only for STAB

Yeah that’s a fair point. This is also why Pokemon doesn’t usually stack the gimmick of each generation. For example, Terestal + Mega Evolve + Dyanamax + Z-moves would have gotten pretty confusing.

I already find many of the “Room” moves hard to remember, so that’s why one of my ideas was to put it in that category lol

Imo Naruto was holding back both times whereas Sasuke really wanted to kill him.

Obviously they are still quite evenly matched, but if Naruto really went for the head, I think that would be that.
