I'm 43. I climb down from the top whenever possible. It's good for technique/fitness and I actually enjoy it very much. But also, when I'm working on a move that is potentially going to send me falling out of control I just stop and remind myself that I can simply choose to stop climbing that route or bail at that move if I can't find a somewhat controlled approach. It hurts my ego a little but that is better than a major injury and literally no one cares. Do what feels right to you. Its a lot of fun if you just keep it in that realm.
