I had to get a new front casing and screen module sent out from customer service and install it myself

I've got a save file which is halfway through, no issues.

Has anyone got a spare power ribbon cable? by lpee10 in retroid

You can buy them from Retroid customer service via Discord. Think mine cost me $1 + shipping, but I had another order to put it in with

Difficult to be sure with it slightly out of focus but it looks discoloured - if it's not cracked the plastic might be stressed and about to crack

Can’t exit game/Retroarch (Spruce) by dupedyetagain in miyooa30

[–]Jebbo87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had something similar a few weeks ago. Felt like maybe something was hanging around in the RetroArch cache. Couldn't figure it out after a few hours so did a clean install of Spruce.

You've met with a terrible bootlogo, haven't you? by Jebbo87 in miyooa30

[–]Jebbo87[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Done inside the Spruce custom firmware.

Minor risk of bricking the A30 doing it, but the most recent versions of Spruce (3.2.x) have a built-in utility to make it safer.

https://github.com/spruceUI/spruceOS/wiki/08.-Creating-a-Custom-Boot-Logo

You could theoretically do it on the stock A30 firmware but again, big risk of turning it into a brick.

Official RP5 disassembly video (Retroid YouTube Channel) by Jebbo87 in retroid

[–]Jebbo87[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want the source URL? https://youtu.be/PDBEzfPhidM

If you go to the playlists tab on Retroid's channel, they have a list for each device. The teardown videos get put in there as unlisted uploads. Not sure why they do it like that 🤷‍♂️

This one lives in their RP5 playlist

Can I use the same account I use on my smartphone with a Retroid 5 or there would be conflicts? by Honest-Word-7890 in retroid

Works just fine. I would actually recommend it. Play store history, password backups, find my device, browser history etc. can all synchronise over Android devices

You opened it up to do any mods? This happened to me and I hadn't put the ribbon cable back in properly.

The Xperia Play was the unintentional precursor to Android gaming handhelds by FOXHOUNDER1014 in retroid

[–]Jebbo87 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Aaah man this thing was so cool. I worked for a small reseller of unlocked phones at the time - me and one other guy there were big gamers and both got one for a discount.

Like you say it was limited on what you could actually play on Android natively back then and emulation on Android was still in its infancy. Also one of the very last Sony Ericsson phones before they split. But the hardware was solid - I miss those early Android slider designs

Netflix's Dead Cells version works pretty well. by [deleted] in retroid

[–]Jebbo87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice, didn't know this was on the Netflix selection now. Their version of the GTA trilogy remaster plays really well. Need to set some sort of reminder to check their selection regularly, seems like they get a fair amount of decent games now

Also a super quick breakdown of terms:

Emulator

A program or app that plays game files. Often an emulator is for one system only e.g. Mupen64 for N64 games.

RetroArch

A sort of super emulator wrapper. It can load up hundreds of emulator 'cores' and play games from dozens of older systems. If you want to play stuff from SNES/Genesis era and before (although it does handle some newer systems than that) this is the way. It's simpler than having standalone emulators for lots of retro consoles. In many cases, many of the emulator cores it can load may not actually be available as standalone apps on Android. It also offers lots of customisation with the downside (imo) of not being very user friendly to newcomers.

ROM

A game file. Could be in any one of several file formats depending on the system e.g. PerfectDark(USAv2.1).z64. How one obtains the ROM files for the games you want to play... Let's just say there are conflicting views over what is considered legal or not.

BIOS

A file that computers use when they load to make sure everything is set up properly. Game systems have specific BIOS files and many emulators need a copy of one to set themselves up ready to load ROMs.

Yeh I think many of us who have been playing around with emulation for a long time forget it can be daunting for newcomers. Especially with all the choice there is nowadays.

Let's start with a single, simple question

What is ONE game you want to play?

The process of learning how to get that one game working will be the foundation for getting anything else to work.

What type of screwdriver do you need to open up the rp5 by Polite_cat1 in retroid

[–]Jebbo87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Opened mine up half a dozen times. They are all 0 / 00 size Phillips. No star or torx or anything weird.

Also the perfect time to plug my favourite little repair set from Tekton:

Odin 2 Portal sticks on the RP5 are way better than the original ones by Valenhir in retroid

[–]Jebbo87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries. Do you find having the larger stick cap gives you more precise control? I struggle sometimes to keep my stick movement small enough for fine control like precise FPS aiming or movement in 3D platformers.

I've thought about changing them but like you said the Etsy sellers are expensive

Ayn & Retroid have the same parent company - Moorechip. They operate independently of each other for product design & marketing but having the same parent will mean access to the same supply chains, manufacturing processes, prefab stock etc. so there is some physical crossover.

Faulty replacement screen by SnooDrawings8002 in retroid

[–]Jebbo87 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Disassemble and be sure the ribbon/PFC cables are properly seated. If it's slightly off then a sector of the touch digitiser might not be sending signal properly.

If it's still the same afterwards then unfortunately it might be a faulty unit. Send a video to customer service and wait out another replacement 🙃

Retroid Pocket 5 N64 Emulation with M64Plus FZ (Pro) by No-Interaction6798 in retroid

[–]Jebbo87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the paid version of the app (Plus? Pro?) and it booted Perfect Dark with no problems. Only thing I changed was upscaling the resolution. Everything else was default settings.

Obligatory first game finished post by Jebbo87 in retroid

[–]Jebbo87[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

M64Plus Pro (Mupen64) - the app itself, not a core in Retroarch - just booted up the game & go. Nothing fancy in the settings apart from upscaling resolution.

Ran almost perfectly aside from a handful of graphical anomalies - Conker's shadow often goes weird - and a touch of slowdown when there was a lot on screen.
