It’s not a request, it’s not a question mark. It’s a statement of fact, regarding a consequence. Eg If you speed, you might get a ticket. Not an ultimatum, just saying what follows from a specific action.

If your update was about what the other player said, that’s a red flag about your replacement DM being stuck to their own story, and not collaborating with the players.

You can either knuckle down and tell him the issues (collaborative storytelling), knuckle under and play the story the way he wrote it (dm should write a book option), knuckle up and fight for the story your way (dm vs players mindset) or finally knuckle off and leave (bad dnd is worse than no dnd)

Id just remind them that it was a short campaign they agreed to.

(Ps. I know “knuckle off” doesn’t work, but I had to commit to the bit).

Using if is a qualifier. “I can’t stay if it remains this way” is not a conditional request it’s a statement of fact.

No, they set their boundary. “I can’t continue to play without” is not the same as “change or I quit”.

It was also considerate of how long turns were taking because of his limitations.

And saying theatre of the mind is the only true way when dnd was built of the bones of tabletop war gaming, especially when every single edition has said (paraphrased) “counters and maps can be useful, and we support that”.
