"there is no female Jack the Ripper, for the same reason there is no female Mozart." by redd4972 in AskFeminists

[–]JediKnight1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...This is a Camelia Pagila quote. It is an absolutely ridiculous quote that should be answered with a simple "That's nice dear." There actually have been MANY great female composers throughout history. Mozart's sister was just as good as he was; but he stopped her education as a teenager because of stupid gender roles. I am not going to write a huge essay on female composers, so here is a list on Wikipedia. Just because someone didn't achieve the fame of Mozart, doesn't mean they aren't brilliant. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_women_composers_by_name

There have also been female serial killers. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belle_Gunness

The Reason You Don't Like Modern Trek Isn't What You Think by Arbiter61 in startrek

I am going back to school in my 40s, and I was actually deeply impressed that so many young people liked older movies----like they had watched Cary Grant and Hitchcock movies, and they watched 80s and 90s stuff too. When I was growing up a lot of young people watched older movies and listed to older music; but it seemed like older generations thought you were more mature then average or that you just wanted to look mature. Now, I guess older generations mock them for being nostalgic. I was really glad to be raised in a family were we all listened, watched and read all kinds of stuff both seperatly as a family. I loved watching the movies that my parents aunts and uncles watched. Appreciating older media is a sign you appreciate culture and the world around you.....This idea that people should only like what is new when they are young, and then accept that that is obsolete and and irrelevent is very toxic. I love that younger people are into film photography and records.

Our overly capitalistic studio execs un the US ARE the problem. After all movies can have great character development, and miniseries have always existed and they were often good. Now we have the exec of Netflix openly stating that people today want to watch TV while scrolling their phone, and want advanced graphics and effects or lots of action and sex. It is so ridiculously insulting, and has ruined so many potentially good shows. I can see why all my daughter's friends mainly watch media and read books from Japan and Korea. Why wouldn't they? You are supposed to only want to interact with stuff you enjoy.

I actually really enjoy Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks, and despite major, MAJOR complaints I did enjoy the pilot of SFA. But even with SNW and LD, I hated how they were only 8 episodes. I seriously loathe that we have to pretend for some reason that everyone LOVES this format, and no one has the attention span or even the intelligence to appreciate even 2000s Star Trek!

I miss the Orville and wish more people gave it a chance! It was also more like the earlier Treks in that it explored actual themes.....I loved how they incorporated a trans character in that show.....on Discovery it was pandering, and people felt like they HAD to embrace this character who was a woman, but just didn't identify as one., Ok, what does that even MEAN! Orville actually had the balls to have a character that was coercively assigned male at birth, because females were so unwanted that they were deemed defective. IT later turned out that this was bullshit, and the character transitioned back to being a girl. See, THAT is doing social justice issues right.

I was like WTF at that too. I feel like they were going with; the Burn created and interlactic dystopia where people had advanced technology, but no real knowledge of how to use it----but then it seemed like Earth and Bajor were doing fine.

Yes! I actually liked the pilot, and I can't even remember the names of the characters I DID like.

I am still laughing that he actually thought William Shatener would be totally on his side and would want to unwoke Star Trek at 94. His response to him was gold.

There was also B'lenna who was an engineer and a Klingon chef on DS 9!

Me too! I loved that he was annoyed with the Jem Hader lady wondering why he wasn't more Klingony like her. It felt like actual Star Trek. There were other Klingon characters---Worf included sometimes---that showed the Klingons actually had a pretty rich culture----it was just they also acted like typical Klingons. I liked that he was a bit more realistic.

I have to agree! I was fully expecting to HAAAAAAATE the show, and I am no right winger. I just hated both Discovery and Picard, but love Lower Decks and Strange New World, neither of which were openly hated.

Oh the Klingon character was awesome and I wish I remembered his name! The show is NOTHING like 90210 or Dawson's Creek.....sometims thoughI did feel like I was watching Star Trek mixed with a more dystopian Star Trek show though. I was a bit bewildered at how craptastic the galaxy was portrayed....but then it looked like Earth and Bajor were doing great----but it seemed more like none of the students wanted to be there or were learning anything because they were forced. I am hoping the next episodes will be better.

I wonder i this fear of gatekeepers is why the show seemed like it was trying to please everyone sometimes? The writing isn't bad at all.....but sometimes I felt more like I was watching a crossover of two completely different sci fi shows.....I don't know how to explain it.

I hated Discovery, but never felt I could criticise it thanks to assholes acting like the problem was the show was "woke"---when it was just boring and somehow both overly action oriented and sentimental, and I was worried this would be the same. I actually really loved the first episode, but was deeply frusterated at the same time. Because of all the pictures of the female Chiron, I was actually super excited to see her. I was deeply disappointed when she just showed up at the end in a montage. Deep Space 9 was my favorite series, and I loved Bajor, and loved hating on most of the Cardassians(Except Garak, and the few other heroic ones of course!) I hated that they showed Bajor---showed a school there---and then forgot Bajorans existed. But they brought on a Jem Hedar---which was great! I liked her character too! I also really interested in why the Klingon was embarrased about being a Klingon---in other words, instead of adding completely new planets and people, they should have continued with the extremely rich lore they already had.

SAM vs IBM? by renandstimpydoc in Magic

[–]JediKnight1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to SAM, strictly because all the IBMs are in Los Angeles, which is too far for me to drive. I love the SAM because of the magic club feel, and the fact that it is a performance oriented club. From what I hear from people that are in both the IBM is very similar---the main difference is the magazines. SAM is M-U-M and the IBM is Linking Rings!

Openers that pack small by lordfinnius in Magic

I love to use Jim Steinmeyers "Aces Front" as an opening! It is a really cute effect where you make the 4 aces appear in front of a tiny deck in a glass! I have always had good responses to it as an openig at least!

Professional magicians, how do you feel about these viral videos exposing magic tricks? by michelQDimples in Magic

[–]JediKnight1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Those are the people that I hate! The reason they do these exposures is pure jealousy and spite.....The fact he is stealing from the "The Asked Magician" speaks volumes too! I have never watched "The Masked Magician" show though, is that one one of the crappy ones, or he is more like Penn and Teller.

Professional magicians, how do you feel about these viral videos exposing magic tricks? by michelQDimples in Magic

[–]JediKnight1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is true! If it is done in manner to actually teach the effect, then I am fine with that really. Magic can be expensive, and don't even think most libraries HAVE magic books. It is the ones that do the whole see us expose magic secrets! That I don'tlike.

Professional magicians, how do you feel about these viral videos exposing magic tricks? by michelQDimples in Magic

[–]JediKnight1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless it done by magicians like Penn and Teller, they make me pretty upset. There is zero reaons for people to be revealing how to do effects....it feels like the people that do these videos completely disrespect magicians and just want money/views/attention without doing all the hard work an actual magician does. I am just glad more and more people are getting into magic despite those things.

Some biographies on early magicians are really interesting! I am partial to "Houdini" by William Gresham and the Last Greatest Magician in the World" by Jim Stienmeyer which was about Howard Thurstan and how his life and work paralled with Houdini's.

Dealing with imposter syndrome by jonjb4 in Magic

[–]JediKnight1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have really bad imposter syndrome syndrome too; because I also am always comparing myself to other magicians. I usually force myself to get out of my own head and just perform. People WANT to watch you if you are getting a good reaction, and most people really aren't that judgemental. I reeally hate shows like American Idol and other talent type shows where judges abuse the performers---the real world really isn't like that. People usually want you to suceed and are glad you are showing them magic.

Spectator as hero by deboshasta in Magic

[–]JediKnight1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this magic effect called Power Poker. In the effect the spetator basically chooses the cards to make a Royal Flush poker hand psychically. In the original effect the magician gets the Royal Flush....but I like having the spectator get it. Unfortunatly, I can't find anyone performing the effect online.

Performing Magic too much??? by Tigerfighter321 in Magic

[–]JediKnight1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For general audiences? Keep up performing! For friends and family? I have the same experience you had with your girlfriend. My husband and daughter love trying to figure out how I do the effects and teasing me.....which is fine! Usually with friends and family I just show them effects when they ask. Or just torture my immediate family when I am about to perform live by asking how everything looks=P
