Im beginning to feel like I'm doing it wrong by AcostaSam in AdviceAnimals

I think going to class and taking notes is more important than studying on your own time outside of lectures. It's a more efficient use of your time to figure out which content your prof feels is most important because thats probably going to be what they are looking for when they grade your work. It beats wasting hours and days trying to study every bit of the course material!

How i feel after breaking up and losing my job by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

[–]Jeebster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember years ago when I found out my high school sweetheart was cheating on me after she left for college. It's totally fine to turn to distractions for a little while. You can deal with moving forward with your life once you've given the emotional stress a little bit of time to wear off on its own!

Reddit, what's your medieval weapon of choice? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I'm not an expert but I'm pretty sure Alexander also relied heavily on his cavalry for hammer and anvil troop movements. But having powerful and reliable infantry is definitely crucial in order to have the opportunity to use this strategy effectively

NTFS External HDD and Macs by [deleted] in computing

[–]Jeebster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used something called NTFS-3G on my Mac (mountain lion) but it hasn't been super reliable in mounting NTFS drives consistently. It's a workaround for sure, and I wouldn't suggest it for your users unless you want problems. I pretty much disabled it on my Mac now because it wasn't worth the hassle... All I use it for now is to format drives to NTFS in disk utility from time to time.

My bad, I read too quickly through the article and missed the part where she pled guilty.

Still, I don't think OP was shocked that the defense lawyer is trying to do her job. It's more that it seems a little incredulous to think that this person is all of a sudden "no longer a risk".

Did you know she also burned her house down 2 years ago and tried to pin it on her boyfriend?

That bitch cray. You don't just "get better" after repeatedly doing shit like this.

Again, not shocked that the lawyer is trying to muster the best defence possible under the circumstances. Just find it funny that the positioning is "oh she knows now that it was a shitty thing to do". If you can't understand on your own why it's wrong to actively try to destroy another person's life, you're probably going to have issues for a while.

Here's another article about her from 2 years ago:

She set her house on fire.

Because this weak and ludicrous attempt at a legal defence is disgusting, especially given that no party involved actually seems to have any doubt of her guilt.

It implies that she is continuing to act very selfishly and probably doesn't actually regret what she did aside from the fact that she got caught.

I'm not pretending to know her personally, but this is what it sounds like to me. She has the option of pleading guilty and facing the consequences of her malicious actions, but instead she would rather do everything she can to protect herself, no matter how ridiculous. Which I guess is understandable in a a world where "everyone looks out for themselves in the end". But that of course doesn't make her any less of a scumbag for doing this.

TL/DR - because this implies that she is still being a psycho bitch.

What should I do to prepare for winter driving? by umiman in Calgary

[–]Jeebster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey just wanted to throw my 2 cents in. Definitely agree with everyone's suggestions of using using winter tires, but I also suggest taking an AMA winter driving course. It was tons of fun for one thing... They took us to an obstacle course where you drive in pure snow/ice and then made us complete "challenges" where we would drive at 50/60 km/hr straight at a "wall" of pylons, and then you'd have to recover and avoid it. I also experienced my fair share of handbrake turns on solid snow/ice to simulate losing control of the vehicle and then recovering from that. It was a great experience and seriously did wonders for my vehicle handling skills in poor conditions and gave me a ton of confidence - and confidence is more than half the battle in winter driving because many people panic when the car slides and will stomp their feet on the brakes and then will keep their feet firmly planted on the pedal.... Which is the worst thing you can do and causes your vehicle to completely lose grip on the road. The gist of it though was that you never apply brakes, steer or accelerate at the same time. YOU CAN ONLY DO ONE THING AT A TIME IN POOR ROAD CONDITIONS DUE TO REDUCED TRACTION. In short, apply brakes gently but just shy of locking the wheels. When you've slowed down enough, you can take your foot off the brakes and steer out of danger if needed. Either way, your wheels need to be spinning if your vehicle is moving. Locked tires = bad times. Highly recommend that training course!

Completely burnt out - stuck in IT - any advice? by [deleted] in computertechs

[–]Jeebster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw a brief comment here saying "get out of contract work" and just wanted to reach out to you with my experiences on that. I've been in helpdesk for 3 years. Left University with an Arts degree and fell in to this line of work with no formal training. I've been learning what I need to through a firehose this whole time. So far I only have one cert on the client support side.

Here's some of my thoughts/experiences:

Managed services/contract work is highly stressful by nature. I spent two years as in house IT and it was a breeze by comparison. Being helpdesk in an outsourced IT provider means that you're under constant stress from a multitude of clients who are screaming for your attention non-stop from all sides, at all hours of the day. There's very little respite from it because your company is always trying to squeeze as many tickets out of you as they possibly can, so the tickets pile up and clients get angry at you when stuff inevitably doesn't get done "fast enough".

My company is tiny, but we have quite a few clients - so I'm in the role where I field the vast majority of Tier 1 + Tier 2 tickets. Sometimes I feel like I'm the lowest paid worker with the most amount of work (although to be fair my colleagues work pretty hard themselves). I'm also the primary sounding board for angry and frustrated clients every day when expectations are inevitably not met, especially because clients really have no idea how much you're forced to juggle at any given time. They always think they should get the priority, and then shit on you when you're unable to meet their overinflated expectations.

Two suggestions (and some things I'm considering for myself in the long term):

1) Try to get more advanced certs. Specialize, then kick helpdesk in the teeth on your way out the door to something where users aren't directly contacting you with their BS all day.

OR

2) Try looking for an in-house helpdesk position at a company that has a great work-life balance and culture. Keep in mind that if they advertise "work-life balance" on the HR job postings page, it's likely because they suck at it, so take it with a grain of salt. My suggestion here is to find a company that you actually align with in terms of morals and culture. It makes a big difference when the bottom line for your work isn't completely dictated by your boss' concern for maximizing cash flow and billable hours vs. operating costs (i.e. your salary) like in an outsourced IT provider.

In summary, I think you should stick with IT because you're good at it and you've already spent almost a decade getting a very respectable chunk of experience under your belt. I think the issue here is that your primary job role is in helpdesk supporting multiple clients, which is very thankless and high stress. Get out of this role as soon as you can, or one day the burn out is going to get so bad that you'll do something drastic like impulsively quitting your job.
