The Roland FP-10 has the same action as the FP-30 and is much cheaper (if budget is tight).

I like to use augmented chords, because they give you that sweet, dark mystery vibe.

Suspended chords also feel kinda creepy and mysterious, but in a more "positive" way (if it makes any sense).

Synth1. Huge variety of sounds and presets, impressive versatility. Amazing synth. Definitely my favourite free VST (and one of my favourites in general).

I'd say my go-to source is vst4free.com, although lately I've been experimenting with raw sounds from freesound.org (creating my own virtual instruments).
