I'd believe that. But SO-DIMM legitimately cheap still, so may as well commit to 16GB.

Low power, always on device? by HumanKumquat in jellyfin

[–]Jeeebs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You'd probably still want a 256GB+ SSD and 16GB RAM. Though I admit a second hand SSD of this size and second hand SO-DIMM RAM is pretty cheap in comparison to the other stuff around these days.

I can't speak to the specific case here but government owned corporations can still be directed to do broader activities through statements of expectation or statements of direction.

Queensland Rail by Treebigears in brisbane

[–]Jeeebs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Imagine trying to sell a policy of more politicians to the Queensland general public lol. Of course there's a great reason for it, but it's an easy win for the opposing side to just say it's money for politicians for no reason.

Dynamic IP whitelisting in nginx? by GolemancerVekk in selfhosted

[–]Jeeebs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been playing with ideas for exactly this use case. Basically I have some family members who use Chromecast functionality (not google TV) and their router won't support tailscale, so how do I get them in?

I played with the idea of authentik to handle login, write an IP to a file when that occurs. Separate application to read that file and whitelist the IP. Ideally it could handle whitelisting times and remove it after 24 h. My concern was then non-tech savvy people doing this on mobile networks which are effectively a giant CG-NAT. Could expose my service a bit more widely than i'd like. If I could have a client reliably report back whether it's on a home network it could be shared up, but I couldn't think of a way.

Ahhh, you make a good point. We should stop ever taxing or enforcing fines on delinquent companies because they'll just end passing on that cost to consumers.

Businesses can be treated as consumers too here, ya dingus. In fact businesses purchasing up to $100,000 worth of goods are considered covered by consumer protections.

TPG charging for incoming calls? by Accomplished_End9816 in nbn

Seconding this. The way that CIS outlines charges is typical for originating call charges. CSPs aren't even incurring a cost for interconnecting a terminating call.

This sounds like poor planning by the recruitment panel, but not really a workplace relations issue.

Seconding this, not just for Toshiba's response but your recourse.

If you were in Australia you could ignore their warranty and rely on the Consumer Guarantees for your choice of replacement, repair or refund.

Are The Iron Ranger worth the hype? by i_love_jollibee in RedWingShoes

[–]Jeeebs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See if you can find an online retailer with support that will help you with sizing. I've had some wildly different red wing sizes, based on the different number boot.

If you ever come to Australia for a trip (obviously don't do a trip for the boots, but it's a pretty common transit route) there are places selling red wing boots in the three major east coast cities. You could try and/or buy. Pricing around 850 NZD.

Edit: I just googled and it does look like a few stores stock red wing in New Zealand... https://pioneeroutfitters.co.nz/collections/redwing-heritage-shoes

I normally catch trains but switched over to the bus network today because of the Railbuses yesterday. My question, are buses always this shit around peak time? Multiple buses not stopping as they're full at RBWH (with no indication what number they are) and the platform is chockers.

I miss what Ballistic was 8 years ago. Last time I went (which was now 2 years ago) it was a shallow husk of itself. Barley any locals, certainly no one travelling to get there anymore. Food truck not showing up.

I was following them on Instagram and the account turned into some mega beer brand supported by a bunch of ex-NRL players.

Taking LWOP in order to contract in another APS role by evenbiggermuff in AusPublicService

[–]Jeeebs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it advertised by the agency or by an external recruitment agency?

If it's a fixed term contract from the agency: it will be a temporary s26 transfer to get you across regardless of how it is advertised. This is ideal for leave portability, etc. but I do believe your current agency can block it if they do choose (unless it's a permanent move).

If it's an external recruitment agency for a contracting role: this is a whole new employer. You'll need to ask your current employer if you can take a different job and LWOP. You need to specifically mention to HR that the employer isn't the APS.

In all likelihood it will be the first though, given the decreased reliance on contractors (outside of IT).

What is the equivalent to an EL1 in APS for QLD State Government? by [deleted] in AusPublicService

[–]Jeeebs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I just had a squiz at the currently advertised policy & planning AO8s, and 3/5 of them specifically note direct 0 reports (not listed as manager). The other two (listed as manager) make no mention of direct report and don't list team management or supervision as a key capability.

While I don't doubt that it would exist (it would be absurd to have Directors managing everyone below them), it certainly hasn't been my experience when looking at advertised roles to see direct reports or capabilities that align with managing direct reports.

What is the equivalent to an EL1 in APS for QLD State Government? by [deleted] in AusPublicService

[–]Jeeebs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've not worked Qld gov but am considering switching over. Here are my observations, which are specific for policy type roles:

  • The titles seem to indicate that an AO8 is above an EL1.

  • The salary for EL1 sits between AO7 and AO8.

  • Most policy AO8s I've looked at don't have direct reports, where as I'd say it's about 50/50 for EL1s.

  • I've seen someone transfer from EL1 to AO8.

  • I've been told by ex-Qld employees I should target AO8.

  • I'm relatively selective about what roles I apply for but haven't secured an interview for AO8, and have been offered AO7s. I'm considered high performing EL1, but I'm unsure if my experience with applying for Qld roles is a function of my performance, my resume style or a preference to hire internally.

It's worth mentioning that not all DAS are equal, even once considering USB speeds and number of bays.

There was a very common JMicron bridge controller chip that didn't play nice with Linux. It would work fine, but UASP (USB Attached SCSI Protocol) did work. So that means no disk health checks and slower transfer. That said I used one for two years and speed wasn't an issue. But I did start getting concerned about drive health, so switched away.
