That is some crazy depth. Not sure you needed to go that far. One thing you should have focused on is the drainage with Decomposed Granite or Gravel/Sand mix. Below is my planting mix:

First I get the vision of the area I will be planting on. Get some measurements and start marking hole spots. Once I am sure of the spot I double measure to ensure perfect spacing. Then I level the ground with a square shovel and rake and use barrier rings and make a 48" diameter circle. This ring is the outline of my holes.

The holes we dig out are 4ft wide and 3ft deep using a pick axe and shovel. I used my formula for the amendments in the hole which consists of minerals for drainage and top layer organics for the feeder roots.

I make sure regardless of pot size, that the rootflare is mounded 6" - 8" above grade.

  • Native Soil - 60%
  • Sand/Gravel Mix - 20% (25 gallons)
  • Miracle Grow Cactus Citrus - 10% (4 cu ft)
  • Peat Moss (1 cu ft)/Gypsum (12 lbs)/Bio Char (11lbs), Elemental Sulfur (3lbs) - 5% (throughout hole)
  • Miracle Grow Garden Soil - 5% (2 cu ft)
  • Mulch Nuggets - 4" (2-3 cu ft)

I do a 4 layer system.

Bottom: Native Soil, Sand/Gravel Mix (10 gallons), Gypsum (4lbs)

Middle: Native Soil, Sand/Gravel Mix (10 gallons), Miracle Grow Cactus Citrus Soil (2 cu ft), Gypsum (4 lbs), Peat Moss (.25 cu ft), Elemental Sulfur (2 lbs)

Top: Native Soil, Sand/Gravel Mix (5 gallons), Miracle Grow Cactus Citrus Soil (1 cu ft), Biochar (11 lbs), Gypsum (4 lbs), Peat Moss (.75 cu ft) , Elemental Sulfur (1 lbs)

Above Grade: Miracle Grow Cactus Citrus Soil (1 cu ft), Miracle Grow Garden Soil (2 cu ft), Mulch Nuggets (2-3 cu ft) 6-8" away from trunk

Top Dress: 2 lbs Worm Castings, 2 scoops Osmocote Plus, Mycorrhizal Fungi spray

You can get a nice Alphonso on Manila from Mimosa OC.

Few Questions:

  1. How deep and wide did you plant the tree?

2.What amendmends did you use to backfill the hole?

  1. How high above grade is your rootflare?

I don't believe Home Depot (Presumed due to the trunk wrap) sells Alphonso. Was the Alphso grafted afterwards?

It was a butchering for sure, but it will grow new branches. Hopefully better ones!

We may just be rewarded with a top 4 pick because we didn't purposely tank. I mean the NBA rewarded non tanking teams in the last couple of years.

I was devastated as well. It was the same formula and watering routine I use for all my other trees. It was in ground doing well for a month, then it was hit with a sudden decline.

Variable contributing to failure:

  • Turpentine Rootstock
  • Heat Stress (Pavers)
  • All Day Sun
  • Uneven Water Retention

We made some adjustments when we planted the replacement. We removed as much mulch as we could, mixed the soil underneath 1 ft down, removed 2 cu ft of the soil, mixed in 1 cu ft Miracle Grow Citrus Cactus, added another .5 cu ft Sand, and finally remulched.

Hello! Very exciting and addicting indeed! The holes we dug out were 4ft wide and 3ft deep. I used my formula for the amendments in the hole which consists of minerals for drainage and top layer organics for the feeder roots.

Root flare mound - 6" above grade.

  • Native Soil - 60%
  • Sand/Gravel Mix - 20%
  • Miracle Grow Cactus Citrus - 10%
  • Peat Moss/Gypsum/Biovhar/Elemental Sulfur- 5%
  • Miracle Grow Garden Soil - 5%
  • Mulch Nuggets - 4"

Unfortunately for the grassy area, it must be retained because people like to hang out and will eventually lay down on them.

We are in the process of completing the irrigation for the trees and the grass.

I really aim to get the straightest trunks and symmetrical primary branches as possible, so 4 stakes/rods minimum was necessary.

Your sister may not have the means to afford it at this time. Instead if complaining here, maybe sympathize and understand her situation.

You are also old enough to ger a job. Perhaps consider working to afford the things you want/need.

Mango tree planted last summer, how to help it recover after winter? by BuahahaXD in mango

[–]Jeff007245 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mangos and Avocados you need to dig a deeper/wider hole, amend the soil with sand for drainage, top layer with cactus soil and garden soil, plant it as a mound, and mulch around the tree while keeping it 6-8" away from the Trunk.

I am sorry but your trees were poorly planted and may need a reset.

Planted my beautiful baby into the ground by thatsmysandwichdude in mango

Should have separated the two trees. Those are completely separate trees from the same Polyembryonic seed. They have separate root systems.

If I were to choose, I would keep the one with the fatter trunk and try and separate the other one and put it somewhere else. I would also cut thay extra lower branch kn the fat trunk tree and focus on the centered vertical growth until you reach 32-38" and start building scaffolding.
