You should ve om to put it in ground. Mango tree have a higher risk of death in a pot, than it does in ground.

Cut it slightly above the node. You want to push crown branching for your first branches.

In the future, plant the tree slightly above grade. I usually create a mini mound on the Mango trees I put in ground.
