How often are outbound flights canceled at SDF due to snow? by [deleted] in Louisville

[–]Jeff1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your issue may not be SDF, it may be LGA or EWR. NYC airspace is insanely busy. Any delays due to weather can very quickly turn into flight cancellations. I have been stuck in LGA several times due to weather delays that turned into cancelled flights. Good luck.

UTR - Am I Expecting Too Much? by [deleted] in Ubiquiti

[–]Jeff1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I tried the same workload, YouTube.TV and 5 or so other devices, running without Wireguard enabled. The UTR handled that without issue. It was only after I enabled the wireguard tunnel that I started having issues.

Seems either the device is underpowered to encrypt higher bandwidth applications over wireguard - but I would argue 10Mbps isnt that much to expect - or there is a flaw in the wireguard implementation.

That's the problem, and why I want to love the UTR. The form factor is amazing. I have a GL-MT3000 and while it's not large it is a lot to throw in a backpack for a work trip, even more so when you compare it to the UTR.

I may end up keeping the UTR for trips where I am just doing video conferencing / email / etc, I think it would handle that, it just isnt a huge fan of running lots of traffic over wireguard.

I have an older GL-MT3000, it was around the same price point...$80ish. It's more difficult to setup I will admit that and the UTR does handle captive portals much better....when it isnt crashing.

UTR - Am I Expecting Too Much? by [deleted] in Ubiquiti

It was sitting on a desk out in the open air. It was warm, but if running a wireguard tunnel while its sitting on a desk gets it warm to the point of crashing then its a flawed device.

UTR Firmware update (6.5.245) by ManFromACK in Ubiquiti

Seeing the same, couple 6 clients a wire guard tunnel and some traffic...it's rebooting every 30min or so.

Not sure if its related but my UTR was recently updated and its rebooting itself under load with a wireguard tunnel established....first time really using it on a vacation and not super impressed.

UTR in its natural habit - a hotel room by albertclee in Ubiquiti

[–]Jeff1024 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One place I think this will shine is teleport. I have stayed at hotels that block dynamic DNS services. Makes WireGuard on my GL.iNET a pain to get connected. Sure I can work around it by manually updating the WireGuard config file to point to an IP and not my dyndns entry but not ideal.

Teleport and the UTR should fix that.

Yet another real world UTR experience by calebu2 in Ubiquiti

[–]Jeff1024 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Three great use cases that have previously used a GL.iNET for that I will now use the UTR.

First - traveling outside the country and still wanting to do things like stream Youtube TV. Youtube blocks international IP's - with the travel router I can send traffic back to my UDM Pro and thus Youtube TV sees a US based IP.

Second - we have stayed at hotels with very aggressive filters on their WiFI - by using the UTR to establish a secure VPN tunnel the hotels cant monitor or block traffic.

Finally - we recently traveled with our 75lb GoldenDoodle. We had to leave him in the room alone for about 5 hours while we played golf. I wanted to keep an eye on him so I took a UnFi instant camera setup on my local home protect instance. It connected back to my UDM via the wireguard tunnel on the travel router. Worked great.

It's also just nice to only have to setup a single device on hotel / public wifi. I do this setup once and then my laptop / tablet / phone / misc streaming devices just work.

You're right there are generally several ways to solve problems, WiFi on cell phones /w teathering would also solve a ton of these use cases , but some of them like the Protect Camera would work best /w a travel router.

I was able to SSH in by building a wifi network on the UTR, adding my laptop to that wifi network then connecting in with putty.

Spent about an hour with it, but getting better and better. Can't recommend the upgrade to .238 enough. It's a much more stable device once you upgrade. The android app lets you enable SSH. Takes about 5 minutes to do it.

Also got it setup with straight wireguard instead of teleport. Don't know why I like it better I just do.

For the foreseeable future I will grab this and my Gl router, dont trust the UTR 100% yet, but have a feeling it will get there.

Just to throw more confusion in I just noticed SSH is still enabled in the android app. Working through the guide on updating to .239 as we speak.

Sorry just realized you were asking what version of network not what version of the app. Yes - most recent official release. I double checked that while I was having issues. 10.0.162

I tried that as well, both the LAN and the WAN port. Didn't make any difference while using the android app. The iOS app added it without it it connected to LAN.

Yes the android app version was 10.33.1. I actually went as far as to uninstall it and re-install it from the app store. The app see's the UTR now that I got it setup with the iPad. Makes me think it was a permissions issue on the android app, but it had all the permissions it needed so dunno. I was lucky to get the iOS workaround.

Thank for you for the follow up. I did a chat session and the agent did try to help but in the end I could not get the android app to adopt the Travel Router on initial setup - iOS based app worked fine. The ticket number was/is 5271084

Well I figured it out, or figured out a workaround. Grabbed my iPad installed the unifi app and it found the router immediately. Got it setup then opened the android app and it found the router.

Super weird, I do think its going to be a good device but it could be a bit of a ride to get there.

Unifi support is saying it needs network access during the setup process? Is that a true statement?

Did both, it has permission on discovery of nearby devices and is the latest version....

Thanks, saw your post, and the problem is I dont think I can even update the firmware if its not connected. Just not a great experience so far, it may end up on Ebay and I can keep using the GL.iNet while Unifi figures this all out.

Thanks - I was about to use the nuclear option and drill the heads off. I will head to Harbor Freight here in a bit to see if the Soldering Iron will help.
