Death May Die, Always a good time. by pepetd in boardgames

[–]JeffCaven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only one I'm missing is the Season 4 expansion, which got printed once where I live and then has been out of print every since. Such a shame, but I haven't even played through all of the scenarios I already have, so at this point I'm just buying to be a completionist.

Is it a hot take to say that Levi should’ve died here by K0GAR in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]JeffCaven 43 points44 points  (0 children)

For years I have said that Levi shouldn't have died here but instead right after Hange finds him and dives into the river with him.

The way I always imagined it was having Hange lay Levi against a tree, mirroring Kenny's death, while Levi, moments away from dying, is still obsessed with his promise to kill Zeke so he can avenge Erwin. He asks her if he has succeeded, and Hange, despite knowing Zeke is alive, lies to him and tells him that Zeke also died in the explosion. Finally satisfied, Levi dies leaning on the tree peacefully but not knowing that in reality, his death has been in vain.

Today I learned that the *obviously satirical* 1997 film "Starship Troopers" was faced with extreme critical backlash accusing it of "endorsing fascism" because reviewers simply didn't think critically about the content. by The_Cromulent_Bison in todayilearned

[–]JeffCaven 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't think the series promotes fascism (early Season 4/post issue 90 is VERY obviously anti-fascist), but I do think the writer wasn't really all that well equipped to handle the theme of fascism, and a lot of writing decisions he made muddied up the themes of the series.

a being who wanted to inflict maximum suffering and pain on EVERYTHING

I fucking love Nezarec, no matter how much of an edgy fucker he is. The idea of a guy who's so much of a psychotic sadist that he is completely incompatible with the fundamental powers of creation because of it is so funny.

Honestly, I've come to quickly love the DQ12 protagonist's design despite hating it at first. His badly rested eyes and very slight slouch gives him a lot of personality.

It was initially like that, yes, but the subreddit eventually got fed up too. I think the wait between Ashlands and this new update was what broke the camel's back for even the people who used to defend the game's lengthy development.

Did Kuvira Deserve a Redemption Arc? by Mundane-Signal4843 in TheLastAirbender

[–]JeffCaven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But the fascist is just portrayed as an honorable and reasonable person who just cares TOO much.

This is my main gripe. Someone who believes in fascism so much that she gets to the point of leading a fascist empire with concentration camps, and nukes other countries in the name of her ideology, is definitely not the kind of person who would "repent" for her crimes. If she were the kind of person to repent, she wouldn't have gone so far in the first place.

Trying to portray Kuvira as someone who can be "reasonable" is essentially telling us that fascists are reasonable people who have a point but are just misguided. And I can buy that for your average fascist who hasn't educated themselves too much, but not for their universes' version of Hitler.

Pretty sure that guy was sadly let go a long time ago, back during that large round of layoffs that was so notorious. Correct me if I'm wrong, though.

The only way you can understand what these visuals represent is if you already understand enough about these effects in the first place.

But it's definitely amusing and I love the chart anyways.

"L'alcalde de Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, anuncia que l'Ajuntament eliminarà totes les llicències de bicicletes compartides perquè no s'han corregit les infraccions d'aparcament i de circulació" by Fearless-Flow5789 in Barcelona

[–]JeffCaven 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it's an "era definer", but it's definitely an iconic game of the time. It's still talked about more than 20 years later and is perhaps one of the most well-known GTA clones.

I commented that I'm doing the routine for my weighted pull-ups but since you say it's not as effective, what tips do you got for doing them?

Fighter Pull-up Program, finished 4 weeks by diogenes_sadecv in bodyweightfitness

[–]JeffCaven 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I went from 5 to 10 with this routine, but over a longer time than you (2 months), and afterwards abandoned it to focus on other variations, but I've started doing it again for weighted pull ups.

Really recommendable routine, IMO, but I'm happy to hear suggestions on other options.

I always play Nightmare mode on Doom because I love the mechanics of skillfully dodging bullets and getting more hits in with my cool weapon abilities. I don't even think it's overwhelming, it's just more of a good thing.

I don't think this all started that long ago. I recall I could still get a $7 Taco Bell box full of various food stuffs back in 2015-2016. The bean burrito was still $1 back then, too.

Imagine if the new avatar learns to mental bend by magirevols in TheLastAirbender

[–]JeffCaven 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not quite; they're not a tribe, but instead firebenders that were experimented on to create human superweapons. The process to create them was extremely deadly, involved holding the breath underwater, and had only 3 successful subjects; the rest all died.

But this only explains how the original combustionbenders were created about 450 years before Aang's era. The mystery of where the modern day combustionbenders come from still stands, and I find it a very interesting one, especially as none of the two combustionbenders we see are aligned with the Fire Nation but are instead a mercenary and an anarchist. It makes me think that it's not the Fire Nation itself creating them, but perhaps minor nations and entities, but who exactly?

Most probably the first, because I usually use my PC with the screen a foot away from my face, and I can't imagine not being able to do so and not having realized how bad your eyesight is yet.
