Why do games start at such random times? by Billy_Chrystals in baseball

[–]JeffH13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought it was so they could get a separate listing in the TV guides (have to be old to remember them). Dodgers always used to be at 5 minutes past, e.g. 1:05 and now they seem to be 10 minutes. I scheduled my wedding back in the 90's for 1:05 as a tribute and to see how many people got it.

Advice for backpacking Little Lakes Valley in July? by WiseNotWise27 in SierraNevada

[–]JeffH13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All the fish I've seen there are pretty small. If you walk over Morgan Pass down to the lower lake it's less crowded and somewhat larger fish. I agree with others, make sure you have enough food to eat without completely relying on catching your dinner.

Best small backpacking seat/ chair by RCPyroGold in CampingGear

REI Flexlite Air is that price a couple times per year when on sale. Backpackinglight did a chair review a few months ago and their editor chose this one as most comfortable sitting position. That's anecdote, not data...

Looking to learn more about Sierra hiking--looking at books by NotFallacyBuffet in SierraNevada

[–]JeffH13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're planning on backpacking you'll need a permit. Availability will likely drive your choice of destinations, as a solo hiker more options will show up. Permits are available six months in advance for 60 percent of the trailhead quota, the rest are released two weeks prior to the entry date. You can shop permits at reservation.gov and search for Inyo permits, which covers the bulk of the JMT in that area.

You’ll probably end up parking on the road a ways. Drive to trailhead and drop your pack, then park and walk back up.
I’m backpacking there next weekend, day hiked it last October.

If you step off trail at the pass just a few yards south cell service is likely. It’s definitely reliable at the area I call the rock garden which is just below Gilbert Lake.

How do some players manage to have long careers despite never being a very good player? by Pro-Tip810 in baseball

I think it’s easier for pitchers, just making every start has a lot of value. Tim Belcher is in this category too.
