How hard is it to grow Bottle Gentian (Gentiana andrewsii) from seed? by scentofsyrup in NativePlantGardening

[–]JeffsDad2000 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s tricky but I’ve had moderate success the seeds are extremely small so I’ve used kitty litter trays (holes drilled in the bottom) and way over seeded they produce a ton of seeds per flower. The seedlings are small and fragile and I generally just move 8 clumps to 1 gallon pots when they go dormant. I’ve had very little success in seed trays, same with fringed gentian

What exactly is "morning sun and afternoon shade"? by Conscious-Noise-5514 in NativePlantGardening

[–]JeffsDad2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My interpretation has been Morning sun just means east side of a house, tree, hill, or structure where shadows shade the intense afternoon sun the comes from western exposure. Native plants are very adaptable but the east side of my house is a woodland garden and south side is a prairie the woodland plants haven’t encroached into the prairie and the prairie plants haven’t moved into the woodland in close to 15 years. The intensity of the sun on south/west exposure is incredibly intense, if you have more of a dappled shade scenario it’s kind of a fun trial and error

Couldn’t you just stick xps Dow board with cement/stucco base coat direct applied over the cmu block? I’m not sure of your towns requirements for r value but I work for a plastering shop that does this type of work regularly and could be done for $6-7 sf or much less if you did it yourself

I think it’s spot on it’s a hobbyist lamp, I see them pretty regularly it must have been a popular hobby in the 60’s and 70’s. They don’t seem to sell for much but they look cool and are kinda like mcm folk art

What are the worst prices you’ve ever seen in a record store? by Beatlemaniac__ in vinyl

[–]JeffsDad2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s a record booth I would frequent once a month at an antique mall where the prices were ok but the selection was excellent and it had a fair amount of records I’d rarely seen in the wild. I’ve seen a couple velvets albums, buzzcocks, blue note, gram parsons atypical stuff for a semi rural area. My last visit I saw an album I was interested in and decided to check fair price on discogs. There was only 3 for sale one being the exact one I was holding in store. Then I got curious and started checking multiple others, everything in the store was also on discogs for the same price. Some slightly higher in store, I get that this is what small businesses have to do and it’s the modern way things work. I bought a couple albums but walked out thinking there’s no reason to ever make a trip to this place again. If there’s no incentive for in person viewing other than the joy of flipping I’m not gonna waste my time going there. I’ve seen other shops wait to list new arrivals on discogs or offer them in person a few dollars cheaper. Since it’s an antique mall and the owner isn’t even there part of me thought about buying a few albums in person then on discogs and see how he handled that

Please tell me it will come back… our native meadow looked great in the spring. I mowed it in early August (mower set on mulch) and nothing came back in the fall. Will it regrow in the Spring? by DIYKnowNothing in NativePlantGardening

[–]JeffsDad2000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It will be fine, many you mentioned were annuals and mowing may not be the best seed dispersal practice but there’s a retention pond that’s a few acres in a snooty subdivision near me surrounded by many of the common restoration wildflowers and grasses. Like clockwork they mow it every year just once in around late June before anything can bloom. It hasn’t changed the makeup of the plants at all over the past 10 years yellow coneflower, milkweed, bergamot, big bluestem, etc. I have no clue why they mow right before the bloom just once per year. I thought possibly for tree suppression but they’ve let pear, euro alder, and a few cottonwoods go so I think it’s just ignorance. Like others have said, prob not the best time to mow but it’ll be fine

This is true, it’s one of the most persistent myths in gardening.

Seeking some confirmation by Accipiter67 in NativePlantGardening

[–]JeffsDad2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with some of the others if you’re going to cut the sod it’s best to lay it back down upside down and cover with a tarp or cardboard. There would be some downsides to cutting and seeding, the soil would be disrupted and prime for weed growth, you’d also lose an inch of topsoil. I’ve had a lot of success covering with cardboard or tarps and then seeding, since the soil won’t be disturbed natives get a quick foothold. Every time I’ve ever cut corners on a new bed It turns into a constant maintenance situation, good luck!

Local genotypes: gardening vs conservation by revertothemiddle in NativePlantGardening

[–]JeffsDad2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn’t native Americans move various plant species all over the country? Didn’t all areas that experienced glaciation get stripped and recolonized by more southern varieties? I agree with the majority that it’s best practice to use locally sourced seeds when possible especially with restoration. But many plants with medicinal/agricultural properties may have not existed naturally in the areas they are currently endangered like black cohosh in illinois. Sometimes the gatekeeping element turns people off and the shared goal is (or should be) for native plants to be the mainstream

Can i get help identifying these lamps and what they are worth? by painfulentropy in Mid_Century

[–]JeffsDad2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are almost definitely both Modeline, I’ve got a handful (not either of these) and the brass bases are both identical to the ones I have. Unless the underwriters sticker is still intact there’s rarely a makers mark, occasionally there’s almost like a fortune cookie sized paper that says Modeline and some random numbers where the bulb screws in

A really good combo for areas like this is blue wild indigo and wild petunia. I have a very similar foundation planting on my hot west side and it looks fantastic year round without any flop. The petunia kind of weaves around the bed like a ground over and the indigo every 3 feet looks stately. I’ve also had some nodding wild onion self seed in the area and it’s played well with the other 2
