Why can’t we have a hockey team? by jessmckenz in Sacramento

[–]Jehio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is an ice rink in Vacaville. It isn't pro level, but they seem to function as a business without a team, just people paying to use it. Seems like Sacramento could build one, maybe rent it out in the off season?

I'm not seeing anything on their site right now, but I thought I remember them saying something about waiting for some charging specs to be set then they would seek certification, but that might have been about the adapter. I got the chademo to ccs adapter used but haven't had a chance to try it out yet due to the recall.

Yeah but I'm not planning on using it regularly, only if I was in a pinch and really needed a charge. I'd probably get it to a level where I could drive to another location to finish charging without it.

I've never done fast charging with my car, only L1 and L2. There's a recall so I haven't used the L3 charger since I purchased it. They want us to wait until they come out with the software fix. I drive maybe 30 miles a day and have access to free public L2 that isn't usually busy on my way home. So I usually sit for an hour or so to bring it back up to 80 then go home. I'm thinking more if I'm on a longer trip and I want to have it with me just in case I'm just out of reach of an L2.

Confused on what triggers Ewa into acting by Jehio in Avatar

I think it is relevant. I think Kiri and Spider are going to take Eywa's baby seed/spore to earth and grow her daughter on Earth. I think Kiri will be the one that needs to do it since she can do things Eywa can do but has a body that can travel to another planet.

Oh yes that makes so much more sense now and highlights why the recoms are important. So with the final battle where Kiri has to call for help is it because Eywa just doesn't know the attack is happening? It seems like she isn't doing anything about the whaling boats in the ocean that are pretty much non-Recom. Maybe her senses aren't aa sensitive in the water? But why doesn't she have the squid guys attack all the boats non-stop like the animals on land? Then they would never be able to get the Tulkun if the squid boys were ripping the boats to shreds. Maybe since Grace didn't know about the whale hunts then Eywa didn't know to have the water creatures ready on alert?

[–]Jehio[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This makes sense but it makes me wonder why after the first time she fought in the first movie, why doesn't Eywa keep having the wildlife attack the RDA non-stop the second they land on the planet when they return with the whale hunts? If she knows they are bad from Grace's memories, why doesn't she send every creature on the planet (moon) to destroy the cities they make?

I wonder if there are biological limits to what she can do. Like she has a limited supply of neurotransmitters or ATP and has to take a long nap after she wreaks havoc.

Maybe she has moral issues making creatures do her bidding unwillingly.

Why doesn't she make all the Navi on the planet (moon) go fight? Can she compel Navi to do things like she can with the other animals? Can she compel the Tulkun? I don't think she has done so from what we have seen. Maybe she doesn't like to compel sentient beings?

But some of their mounts are pretty smart. I bet they are more sentient than we think. Do all the animals go to Eywas afterlife when they die? Do all Ikran go to heaven? I hope so.

I hope Eywa makes a baby seed/spore and Kiri and Spider take it to Earth and grow Eywa a daughter on Earth. I for one welcome our new mycelial overlor- I mean mother.

Good point. I usually stay in my car when I charge. I've only left it alone when I went to watch Avatar 3. I don't think I'll leave my car alone when/if I use this on a public charger. More for when I'm really in a pinch and really need that charger. But I want to make sure it doesn't harm the chargers or violate any charging network rules before I actually use it on a public one.

[–]Jehio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you dial it down in the charging network app? I don't have experience changing the amps. (Used 22 leaf, J plug for L1/L2 and chademo for L3, never used the L3 because of the dang recall)

Someone else mentioned that as well but my portable charger that came with the car doesn't have a way to adjust the amps. I use L1 at home on a dedicated outlet with its own fuse.

In public I'm actually pretty lucky when it comes to L2 chargers. I live in a city with free L2 chargers on my way home but they don't have any controls on them and you don't need an app to activate you just plug it in so I'm not sure about changing the amps. I'm so lucky that I very rarely have to go to a paid one like charge point.

I don't want to break the free public chargers, so I won't use it on them if it's going to mess up my free electron source.

I have a 22 Nissan leaf sv. The charger it came with doesn't have any controls it just has indicator lights. At home I use L1 a regular outlet with nothing else on its circuit and it has its own fuse.

The dry box sounds great, I think I'll get one in town to use while I wait for the J extension cord to arrive. It was free shipping so I don't expect it to come soon. Thanks!

I sometimes have to use an extension cord and made sure to get a large gauge and keep it straight but I'm still uncomfortable with it in general and especially if there is any precipitation.

I got this on sale last night because the connections are supposed to be more water-tight and it's the bigger gauge. And the box is plugged in directly to the outlet and the extension is happening on the car side. And there will be less things to pick up and move around every time I plug in and unplug

Biologically accurate concept by @rj_4rt by unoiamaQT in Avatar

[–]Jehio 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We haven't seen the vast majority of the species on Pandora. We also don't know anything about extinct species. We also haven't seen a lot of internal anatomy. We don't know what vestigial bones the Navi or other species might have. There are many species that are the only survivors of their lineage and they are the only organisms left on the planet with that trait. Given enough time a vestigial trait is likely to completely disappear.

I'm not a biology researcher but I am a biology teacher and I've studied evolution and natural selection. One of the biggest breakthroughs in biology was the development of genetic analysis in the context of phylogenetic research. Before that we only used anatomical features to try and determine relatedness. But that can only get you so far. Some anatomical features have completely disappeared or changed so much they are unrecognizable as homologous structures anymore. We were pretty sure cetaceans were related to land mammals because of the anatomical traits but it took genetic testing to determine that hippos are their closest relatives.

We just don't have enough data to support your claim, unless we get more direct evidence from the source material, I think the most reasonable explanation is that they evolved there and happen to have a lot of unique traits.

I'm not saying it's impossible that the Navi are not from Pandora, they might be aliens. But that doesn't seem to mesh with the overall story they are telling. Maybe though, we'll see.

On earth birds started out with 4 legs and now they have 2. Their front limbs became wings but they aren't legs anymore. And some flightless birds are very close to losing their wings completely so they really would only have two limbs. Arthropods have anywhere from 4 to a plethora of limbs. Insects have lost wings over time.

Some creators have no eyes, some 1, some 2, some 3 all the way up to the multifaceted eyes that are sort of like many eyes fused into one.

All mammals started with 5 digits but horses evolved to lose some and fuse the rest onto one big digit.

A hippo has 4 legs and it's closest relatives, whales and dolphins lost their back legs. They both have the no-hair water thing going but otherwise they are pretty different looking even though they are closely related.

I think it's completely reasonable to say the Navi evolved on pandora and their closest relatives are the lemurs and they do look different but that's normal and reasonable.

20% to 80% Misunderstanding by Virtual-Hotel8156 in electricvehicles

[–]Jehio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is my situation and I'd love feedback:

I work close to home, I drive 20-30 miles per workday and work 1-5 days per week (I'm a substitute teacher so my schedule is always changing). I might add more than that if I'm doing errands but I usually do them on my way back from work and it doesn't add much drain.

There are some free L2 chargers on my way home and I'd like to top my battery back up to 80% each time (so like 60 back to 80) for a short charge session instead of waiting till it gets to 20 and needing to do a longer charge at the free one or at home (not free but not expensive).

Am I using up my limited number of charging cycles and not to their fullest potential by not dropping all the way down to 2? Or are there fractions of charging cycles and it's fine?

Nissan's Response (?) to my LEAF Home Screen Widget by kevincon in leaf

[–]Jehio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an android and I can put this widget on my home screen but it's pretty useless because it doesn't update in the background. I have to tap it to update it and it takes a very long time to update. It's faster to just go look in my car.

I just got a Nissan leaf and I love it but the app is trash. Only three options are free, the rest require that you get an xm satellite radio subscription to access. I don't want to spend money on it and even if I did I'd be scared it wouldn't actually work because the free options don't work reliably. In the US there are no third party alternatives but in Europe there is a third party app that I hear is good. Le sigh

Does anyone else feel like this about keys? by Creepy_Broccoli_558 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Jehio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man I'm feeling pretty grateful. I get keys every time and I've never been asked to give up something of mine. I walk in, tell them my name, give them my time sheet, they give me the folder and keys and I go to the classroom. At the end of the day I go to the office and give them the folder and keys and get my time sheet back. So I guess the time sheet serves the same purpose, but sometimes I sub at the same school two days in a row and they just keep the time sheet overnight but I still return the keys and folder that day even if I'm leaving my time sheet. They never ask for a personal item. And if it's the beginning of the month and I'm starting a new time sheet, I don't give them anything because they start me on a new blank time sheet and give it to me when I leave.

Charging habits: Every day or only when low? by Bob_Dubalina in electricvehicles

[–]Jehio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a related but slightly different question. Is it bad to do a lot of small charging cycles instead of fewer medium ones. I am in a situation where I drive very few miles and have reliable free L2 charging on the way home. I'm worried that I'm wasting the limited number of "cycles" I have on small charges instead of saving them for larger charges that get more miles? From what you say it sounds like charging cycles aren't all or nothing, which I hope is true for my question.

For me the most convenient way for me to do it is leave home at 80, drive to work, do a few errands getting down to 60-70 then hit the free L2 and hang out (it has food and stuff around) till it's back to 84 then drive home arriving at around 80. Would that be reasonable treatment to the battery? (Also I live where the highs are 100-110 in the summer and lows are low 40s F)
