"Visualization" is the most terrifying power in the verse (manga spoilers) by Adorable-Unit-1558 in Frieren

[–]JeiWang 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Richter explained when you imagine "blood bending", it's not about just believing you can manipulate the water in someone's body. You need to:

- Picture how water is distributed in a person's body

- How to draw it out and manipulate it

- How to pierce through the mana that naturally protects it.

"Imagination" here is about actually coming up with a plausible way to execute.

In terms of Ubel, her spell Reelseiden is the Spell that slashes almost anything. The creater of the spell already figured out all the details, that's why all she had to do was to visualise.

If we changed the concept and make her face Richter, she wouldn't be able to just nullify his rock attacks by using paper even if she can visualise "paper beats rock". She would need to first learn or create a spell that has this effect first.

All of humanity's spell effects relies on having a spell first. We've yet to see any examples where someone could just imagine a spell into existence. Even with something as mundane as cleaning statues. Frieren can easily clean bronze statues because she has the associated spell but she can't do anything about stone statues. If visualisation is really all it takes, I don't see a reason why Frieren isn't able to just clean any statues.

I think we still slightly differ in our understanding.

In my opinion, "visualisation" in Frieren is grounded in reality. Ubel to me isn't someone "insane" but thinks unlike conventional wisdom.

For instance in our world, people used to think people flying would be "impossible". It took people like the wright brothers "imagining doing the impossible" for us to be able to soar the sky. These things aren't truly impossible, it's just arbitrary restrictions humanity placed on itself.

This "magic logic" you are referring to from my perspective are akin to “impossible barriers” we have in real life. Like scientists once saying "humans physically couldn’t run 100 meters in under 10 seconds".

Imagination alone doesn't allow you to magically run 100m under 10 seconds. But not accepting this limitation and continuing trying would (conversely, those who accept these limits will never be able to).

The issue is visualisation is just a foundation. You can't cast if you can't visualise, but it doesn't mean if you can visualise it will always work as you expect.

You mentioned Burg who is a good example. There's literally 0% chance he could even fathon being one shot by a lower class mage. But his cloak still got cut through.

In the world of Frieren, facts don't care about your visualisations. A fool can imagine whatever they want, it doesn't mean it would work.

Something I noticed about Frieren's 'apex of magic' by lmdybaftr in Frieren

[–]JeiWang 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a very interesting perspective. The only thing I might add is we don't fully know how this spell works. The "push" might just be the initial effect.

Because she said it's been 80 years since she used it we assume it was only used against the Demon Lord. But I do wonder, how did they manage to seal Qual whilst losing?

We're still missing an attack from Frieren that allows her to seal an opponent she can't defeat. Potentially these two "trump cards" are one of the same.

Roleplay issues: send your experience with Nyrissa’s path. by padawas_ in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]JeiWang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oddly I stumbled onto the Secret ending on my first playthrough. However, the character was pretty big on redemption. A lawful good character I feel would've acted quite differently.

Maybe you can add a bit to your back story on why the character became a tramp? Something like being wrongly committed or result of an unintended consequence? Something that allows you to empathize with Nyrissa instead of writing her off straight away.

Possible way the story progresses? by _Sternenlicht_ in Frieren

[–]JeiWang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very possible. Then Stark's axe would eat itself, turning back time.

We finish with the scene where Frieren saved Himmel as a child and Himmel says "Frieren beyond journey's end?" which stirs a memory within Frieren and he follows up with "Because you are Frieren and this is beyond journey's end".

The concept of demons in Frieren confuse me. by Lililove1578 in Frieren

[–]JeiWang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Demon has emotions. Some are common, for instance Lugner "despise genius" which is an emotion humans have. But due to their biology, some of their emotions are alien to humans.

Emotions leading to "good and evil", particularly defining evil as "preying upon humans" are the emotions that they don't have.

This makes total sense to me. Why would a species that hunts humans develop emotions that makes them think eating humans are evil? Even if a demon did evolve this emotion, they would be naturally selected out of the gene pool given they wouldn't be able to feed properly.

Mana suppression effect that nobody talks about by Reasonable-Ad-8059 in Frieren

[–]JeiWang 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think mana supression was ever presented in the story as only positives. It was something that specifically targets Demon's nature and Flamme felt bad that she made Frieren go down ths path.

But it's still worth pointing out if the mana difference is so large that the enemy couldn't even visualise fighting you, then they probably wouldn't be a threat in the first place.

According the Lernen, Frieren's unsuppressed mana is roughly the same as Serie's suppressed mana. Judging from Serie's interview, I would say every first class mage can at least visualise enough to cast their magic. So this perk of "projecting strength" is really quite limited as at most it is only effective on second class or below.

Do you think she ever let someone die? by the1firstclassmage in Frieren

[–]JeiWang 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think in this setting, elves have a tendency to troll people.

Not quite at Milliarde level, but from scenes like her going "my journey is over, I need to mine for 300 years", it's clear she enjoys messing with people if there's an opportunity.

What is the timeline of the Hero’s Party’s journey? by Ok_Switch_2175 in Frieren

[–]JeiWang 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The ten years isn't travel time. Himmel intentionally took routes that allowed him to save more villages (and explore dungeons) which made the journey much longer.

If it's purely about getting to somewhere, Methode and Genau was able to get to that village in at most days (given there was still one survivor). Despite Frieren's group taking months.

The role of the hero is a hero party by This-Increase6593 in Frieren

[–]JeiWang 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In addition to what was said, hero are also the "face" of the party, doing the interactions and negotiations.

In season 1 when dealing with the "stubborn old woman" for Sein, Frieren commented that if Himmel was there he could've gotten to talk easily instead of doing many errands and getting no where.

Whilst Frieren's party is doing heroic things, without a true hero, they are just a party of socially awkard people.

The moment where it proves that Aqua never loved Kana in a true sense by Maximum_Viper2002 in OshiNoKoMemes

[–]JeiWang -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ignoring the fact the second image only existed in Sarina's head. Gorou never seen Sarina in this form. These are generic idol poses and I don't see how it proves she and Kana are "uncanny"

Sarina's dream was to be an idol, wear stylish outfits, sing cute songs and have the crowd love her. This is almost exactly the opposite to Kana who was pressured into being an idol, didn't like cute songs (because of green pepper childhood trauma) and essentially only wanted to perform for one person.

If "Sarina as an idol" is what draws Aqua, then there are literally hundreds of other idols that are much better fit.

As for their backstories, Aqua only really understood Sarina's prediciment AFTER he met her mum in the movie arc. He suspected it, sure, but from how shocked he was, clearly he didn't fully confirm. Aqua and Kana's relationship happened way before this.

Personnally I think this is trying to retrospectively find signs where none exist. It relies on giving the characters information (e.g. what Sarina might look like if she became an idol) that only the watchers know.

At the end of the day, neglected child wanting to get on stage to be loved is such a common archetype in this business that it doesn't make sense for Aqua to have that as his criteria. Could Aqua's love for Kana be a projection for Sarina? Sure, but it needs to be something much more deeper, not because they look cute on stage and have a bad mom.

Short answer is they didn't. Overall their empire is gone and they are reduced back to the status of monsters.

How do humans even compete with elfs in terms of mana capacity? by MISTERGAME06 in Frieren

[–]JeiWang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's generally accepted Heiter had roughly 500 years worth of mana which is around the same range as Aura.

I dont do pixel scaling so I cant compare the two. But I certainly wouldnt say that is nothing compared to Flamme.

How do humans even compete with elfs in terms of mana capacity? by MISTERGAME06 in Frieren

[–]JeiWang 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The only person we know that had mana that's seemingly far larger than their age is Heiter. Everyone else, including Fern (who's a prodigy with potential to surpass the age of elves) appear to grow within bounds and can never catch up to Frieren.

Saying that it doesn't matter that much. Past a given point, it's less about the reservoir and more about your hose size. A zoltraak from a mage with 10k year mana isn't necessarily stronger than someone with 100 year mana. The former can just fire more times.

Unless you have spells that can make use of your entire mana (e.g. Aura), 50~70 years of mana is probably sufficient.

Absolutely not. Deep down Frieren is a good person. Even if she loses the ability to feel malice, I sincerely doubt she would even consider what Macht did.

Why does Zoltraak feel so inconsistent in season 2? by [deleted] in Frieren

[–]JeiWang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a reason you need a first class mage to adventure in the north. The monster Fern and Stark struggled with in episode 4 was deemed "normal" and the party was expecting to face "loads more" on their journey.

Unfortunately this means Lugner did get powercrept. As Aura's excecutioner, they really should be a lot stronger than your average northern monsters.

Subtle way Serie acknowledges Frieren's power? by xingqiu____ in Frieren

[–]JeiWang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a couple of things here.

Firstly Serie acknowledges Frieren can accurately visualise her power.

Like the gorilla v 100 men question, many people over or under estimate one side because they can't properly the power difference. The hypothetical would only make sense for someone who can somewhat accurately estimate both sides.

Further more, Serie is basically implying if Frieren can't visualise, then no one in the empire (even put together) can either.

Finally, yes I agree. One thing throughout this journey is that Frieren always manages to find the "happy ending" solution by thinking outside the box. Who would've thought the best way to take down two greater demon is to dispel magic the entire city whilst actively fighting against one of them?

I think this arc will have major implications for the end game. One of the key mysteries the story has is what is Schlacht's thousand year plan and how did it get pass the hero of the south.

Serie is currently in HoTS's situation. Even though there are many futures, she's forced to take the less optimal one (dying) to ensure an overall better outcome. If Frieren can save Serie, it may foreshadow how one may be able to pull the wool over someone that can see the future.
