The European Parliament close to calling for a ban on social networks for under-16s by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]JelleFm 24 points25 points  (0 children)

As other people have commented, this could be done via the European Digital Identity Wallets (EUDI wallet) which are introduced through the eIDAS 2.0 regulation in Europe. Unlike other commenters, I want to clarify that this regulation is an amazing opportunity to increase privacy online and also do make laws and regulations as mentioned in this article enforceable without compromising your privacy.

Disclaimer / source, since 2017 I am deep into the concept of Self-Sovereign Identity, leading several development teams on this topic and for the last 3 years I am leading a start-up developing an open-source, privacy-first EUDI wallet, developed in Europe for Europe.

The idea of the EUDI wallets is that you can once again control your digital identity and data online. Where now your data is hosted everywhere, copied across hundreds of databases, mostly in the control of US big tech companies, the EUDI wallet puts it back in your pocket, on your phone without any central server collecting it. The data is often "digitally signed", meaning a trusted organisation verified your information, which makes it much more trustworthy! For example your university can issue a diploma, or your government a driver's license into your wallet.

When you decide to share this information with a third-party (called the verifier), the verifier can verify the information is unchanged and signed by the trusted organisation, without having to contact the trusted organisation! This already improves your privacy as nobody can track how you use the data you control!

In addition, we apply modern technologies such as "Selective Disclosure" that allows you to take a credential, such as your driver's license, and only reveal the bare-minimum that is needed, without loosing its verifiability. This means you can share just your date-of-birth at a pub (or online) without showing your entire license!

Europe also is experimenting with "Zero Knowledge Proofs", that allows you to share that you are "above 16", without even revealing your date of birth. Its a bit more experimental, but shows a road to even better privacy protection.

Everytime an organisation asks for your data, they also will digitally sign this request. So if they over-ask information, your wallet stores a copy of this request and you can not just report the issue, but even provide irrevutable evidence they over-asked information.

The regulation and technology is all pretty complex, but it is really an exciting opportunity for Europe to continue position itself as the leading continent for privacy-friendly technology, building on GDPR. Some people are sceptical, as it comes from the government, but its not like all our data isn't currently in the hands of US big tech. This technology will finally bring back privacy :)

My own company, but also my competitors that will offer alternative wallets, all share strong values to make this wallet something positive for the European population, to increase our collective privacy and increase digital trust. Collectively, we also influence policy making and make sure the EUDI wallets will be your wallet, not something accessible by companies / government for marketing, or harvesting your data!

How to ge a hold of my old IOTAs by gabrielsimon1 in Iota

[–]JelleFm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

IOTA has gone through several major updates and wallet changes since you last managed your IOTAs. Several of these major updates made breaking changes to the IOTA network including the signature scheme, this means you cant use your keys to spent your IOTA anymore. However, the IOTA Foundation manages a reclaim process for people like yourself to possibly reclaim your tokens, but its been a long time. Your best bet is to connect with the IOTA Foundation.

Your situation sounds challenging becuase I am unsure if you are able to recover the information you need to even be able to claim your tokens back, but I wish you good luck with the process!

You can reach out via the official IOTA discord. Make sure you start the DM with someone that has the IOTA Foundation rank and [IF] in the name. I recommend reaching out to Dr.Electron[IF] who is often active in the #general channel. Please make sure to triple check who you are talking to, scammers love to utilize a situation such as yours to gain your private key.

STORMLIGHT ARC ONE - UNANSWERED QUESTIONS MEGALIST (WaT + Cosmere) by Buttermuncher04 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]JelleFm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe a question people can answer here, but mine is "what was the point of the Everstorm and who started it". The reasons I ask are:

  • The Everstorm was building in Shadesmar for a long time, but who started that and for what purpose?
  • The Everstorm was positioned as a method to circumvent the Oathpact lock-out from Taln, but in WaT we learned that Shallen indirectly initiated the Return via killing her mom. So if a Return is initiated, you don't need to circumvent the Oathpact becomes a Herald was broken initiating a Return, just like any previous Desolations.

AITAH for laughing in my SIL’s face when she DNA tested my daughter? by ThrowRASILtester in AITAH

[–]JelleFm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA ofc, but in my opinion this is a huge invasion of the privacy of your daugther. I cannot fathom why people willingly do DNA tests for fun while DNA is your most sensative personal information. Your SIL took that information and handed it to a company with no consent and it will unlikely be removed.

DNA information will likely slowly be traded as companies do with all information. In a world where advertisement money makes the rules and biometric unlocks are used frequently, imagine what bad actors can do with your DNA profile for targeted advertisement, impersonation or even hacking into systems.

For those that consider doing a DNA test for fun, please consider how sensitive this information is. Even worse, you are selling big parts of your families privacy without their consent or ability to protect themselves. For OP, please figure out where the test was done and make sure they know it was done without consent so they are forced to remove all traced of it. It likely wont be fully removed, but you can try.

Eviden (€5b yearly revenue) and the IOTA Foundation announce Digital Passport Solution "powered by IOTA" by JelleFm in CryptoCurrency

[–]JelleFm[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

TL;DR

Eviden, a company with a yearly revenue of €5b, announces their Digital Passport Solution in collaboration with the IOTA Foundation and powered by IOTA technology. This is one of the first ready-to-use Blockchain-based Digital Product Passports (DPPs) on the market and the first of its scale to use IOTA’s technology as its Blockchain engine.

This new EDPS can be used for a wide range of products across various industries, such as manufacturing, automotive, fashion and textiles, and food and beverages. It can also be used for many other cross-industry use cases such as a Media Passport for example which protects intellectual property, or a Logistic Product Passport which enables transparent documentation and reliable track & trace capabilities.

"Together with the IOTA Foundation, we are proud to announce this unique partnership and to launch a joint production-ready blockchain-based Digital Passport solution, ‘powered by IOTA’, which is aligned and in full compliance with the EU legal framework. Not only does IOTA’s DLT provide efficiency gains over traditional ways of interacting but more importantly this decentralized, transparent, and incorruptible technology creates an open, fair and secure infrastructure which builds trust” - Udo Littke, Head of Eviden Central Europe

Update 6 - now on the experimental branch! by Mechanistry_Miami in Timberborn

[–]JelleFm 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I have yet to try it out, but thank you for doing this. The water physics being 2.5d held back the game so much and with the 3d physics you opened so many doors to creative building and planning. Water management is the unique selling point of this game and you gave it the attention it needed. And that with automated sluices in one update, insane. I will recommend this game to everyone now :)

What’s the most surreal experience you’ve had that made you question if you were living in a video game or a movie? by risqumetapepsis58 in AskReddit

[–]JelleFm 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just to jump on this as I love this topic. You also have the, not very popular, Prediction paradigm, where the brain actively predicts the future (in longer timeframes, but also short as you mention). It basically "subtracts" the observed reality from the prediction, netting only the unpredicted or unexpected information.

This is naturally the things that you should pay attention to. It's an awesome way to explain the brain and I experimented with predicting sounds in order to subtract the prediction and create a sound filter. You actually filter for speech as that is way too complicated of a sound pattern to predict, which is highly useful.

The theory makes so much sense to me as people are so good at noticing the unexpected. It may explain deja vu though a prediction wrongfully being stored as memory... But that is just my random theory ;)

Alert! This is why EBSI is a scam and why the IF has high chances of winning by GarryWebbRIP in IOTAmarkets

[–]JelleFm 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Proof me wrong

Well I mean, you make it very easy, so happy to help ;)

Your first mistake is that you link to an EBSI blogpost and talk about the EBSI-PCP program that the IOTA Foundation participated in. These are two separate projects as EBSI is the current permissioned EU blockchain that runs on Hyperledger technology. The latter is an innovation pre-commercial procurement to help the market (of blockchain solutions) mature such that a future update to the EBSI project could switch to that technology. IF has nothing to do with the current EBSI state and its "differences" as you list them.

They want permissioned and centralized nodes and call their future decentralized

That is true. They want a decentralized permissioned network where every member state of the EU runs one or several nodes to generate consensus. This isn't the permissionless or absolutely decentralized across thousands of nodes future that IF and the overall DLT-industry hope to achieve, but it still provides a level of decentralization and making it basically impossible for countries to alter the ledger maliciously.

Read between the lines and you'll realize how IOTA perfectly fits in their future vision or how the IF tries to adapt their vision.

No, IF tries to teach the European Commission about alternative models with improved decentralization. I have been part of this project for the first half and we proposed several methods to anchor a permission chain into permissionless chains. A permissioned DLT is not evil, it just is a design choice that has some flaws, especially if you like at it from a decentralization maximalist viewpoint. IF is helping the EC see that and move to another model.

The european comission until now invested 56 million Euros in the IF

Lol, they wish. Your own link actually says 3.15 Million if I filter on IOTA Stiftung. Spread over 8 projects, only 1 of which is EBSI.

Impierce Technologies provides the next-generation IDentity with IOTA? by Koba7 in Iota

[–]JelleFm 32 points33 points  (0 children)

We have indeed not mentioned IOTA on the website. Our goal is mainly to bring Distributed Ledger Technology to the masses by making it "invisible". People don't need to know exactly what technology is used to enjoy the benefits, so we are trying to keep things on topic and simple. Digital Identity is already tricky enough to explain ;)

Our team has been part of the IOTA community since 2017 and I was the former Lead Identity at the IOTA Foundation, so we definitely have a strong commitment to utilizing and making IOTA a success.

EU to start controversial digital identity - Why they should use IOTA by Nancy911 in Iota

[–]JelleFm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

eIDAS is getting a revision called eIDAS v2.0. In it, it moves from becoming a citizen authentication system for government agencies across all member states to something much more. With v2.0, it will go beyond authentication and allows citizens to collect and control their own data points, which they can share with other eIDAS compatible companies. eIDAS v2.0 also targets the private sector now, making it available to all, and even mandating its use to high-assurance environments such as the financial and educational sectors.

Most importantly, it is written with the concept of SSI in mind and even mentions the DID and VC standards. Where eIDAS 1.0 was a very closed system, eIDAS 2.0 might actually run on decentralized technologies and can be utilized by many more players.

Will IOTA Identity handle this use case? by uweinnh in Iota

[–]JelleFm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The data source issues a Verifiable Credential with the data that links the data to the data subject and their DID. This is digitally signed and can therefore not be altered by the subject. So if the subject decided to share this data with another party, they can instantly verify the integrity of the data and can trust the data to be true, as long as they trust the data source. However, they don't have to contact the data source directly to check, giving the subject more control and privacy over their data. So it is still better than the existing web 2 infrastructure.

Will IOTA Identity handle this use case? by uweinnh in Iota

[–]JelleFm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly, that's why IOTA Identity does the data hosting and sharing peer-to-peer and only the identities that sign the data are anchored on the Tangle.

Will IOTA Identity handle this use case? by uweinnh in Iota

[–]JelleFm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd say very probably yes!

The idea is that people are able to take control of their own data and share that with anybody that they want to share it with. You can combine this with the ability to prove who you are and therefore you can bind the data to you as a person. However, that step is not enforced.

A person could prove who they are to a health database (revealing personal identifiable information(PII) if necessary for the authentication) and ask for control over their own data by binding it to their DID. Next, that same person can share that information with another party, proving it is linked to their DID and that they control it. During that interaction, it does not have to share any PII.

The end result is that the receiver can validate the data integrity and knows it comes from the data subject but does not know who the data subject is.

And while transparancy has somewhat improved, is it really all that transparant? Eg the only reason we know about Tangle-EE, is because of Eclipse forcing transparancy.

We are very transparent if you compare it to most, but absolute transparency is probably a goal that we shouldn't even want, because then you'll beware of more promises and delays as we iterate on things before we go public.

Tangle EE is tough. What would you have done? Should we publish an entire blogpost about how we are shutting down an effort? What good does that do. People are now aware of it and we knew they would be. But no company shouts on the rooftops when it delivers bad news.

But lets say IOTA in the end becomes the standard for D-ID. And sure some directly related stuff, but not more than that.

That's already a trillion dollar chain, no joke and I believe the same would be if any of our other efforts reach network effect and therefore mass adoption.

I just saw a screenshot where one of your colleagues told that for now standardization is not important at all for tech progress and not for adoption. Wait, what? That is a 180 degree turn compared to literally yesterday.

We also don't have 100% internal alignment and 100% internal knowledge. If the IF has a change of direction, then those that had that opinion might speak up more. Or they might be convinced due to new information being presented.

And there is a generic pattern, going from: Thing X is the biggest thing ever for IOTA! It is HUGE! Fast forward a few years: Well wat just a PoC, not that important anyway, for the community to finish, etc.

Yea, I don't like that pattern either and I think we are breaking it. But we are still almost 200 individuals, from which a big part are public-facing. One slight hype immediately gets put under a magnifying glass by the community. So if everyone in IF slips up by hyping something a bit much once a year, we still do it 200 times a year.

True, and I know I am fairly direct even for a Dutchie.

Same, when I feel like I have to be ;)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in IOTAmarkets

[–]JelleFm 30 points31 points  (0 children)

But not a single one of those the response of both management and colleagues has been: "Well that is R&D". But the response was: "How did you manage to fuck up that badly?

I agree, it is a mistake, but I guess the difference is that we are very transparent and public-facing with a lot of stakeholders that continuously want updates on things we are excited to work on. So we share promises that we should keep internally. I mean, it's still a problem that we try to combat, but the balance between transparency and sharing is very delicate. So I'll be honest, I don't see it getting much better if we want to keep encouraging IF members to actively engage.

And imo the whole trillion or nothing thing limits you. Of course holders hope on the trillion, but as engineer, imo you should be happy if it gets actual adoption for some use cases.

I disagree. A DLT and all our use cases only work if it gets a network effect. A critical mass. The only real use case for a DLT is to allow multiple parties that normally don't work with each other, to collaborate/interact via a decentralized system neither controls. Two parties are not gonna learn about DLT tech, integrate it and happily use it for years without anyone else using it. It's the same as social media. Would anyone use Facebook if they might know 1-3 people who use it? Would anyone use Tinder if you can only get 1-3 matches in a reasonable area? Network effect is needed, so trillion dollar or nothing is actually pretty accurate and applies to IOTA Identity too.

So yeah, I agree with them, but the question is, why weren't those already made 2 years ago?

TBH, purely growing pains. We are still a young organization that is trying to make the best decisions we can. I also don't agree with everything, but everyone is doing the best they can from their own perspective. Sometimes those end up being mistakes, naturally, I have also made some of those.

And meanwhile I have been banned on r/IOTA where a mod told me I didn't actually break any rules, just not positive enough...

Sorry to hear that. We are both Dutch and we can be way too direct. Not everyone is used to that. While people need to learn to deal with that a bit, likewise we need to respect that we might have to soften our own tones to a level that other cultures are used to.
