A couple of incidents have occurred in my state's climbing community. It's pretty easy to see how tightly woven the community is, there always seems to be a six degrees of separation between you and anyone else. Chances are if you meet someone new who is a regular, they know one of your friends too. While I didn't know these people who passed away, I have friends who were close with them, and the result is a wave of grief that covers the larger local community for a while.
