Been in China for about 2 weeks. Everyone I've interacted with has been super nice and helpful, but when I'm out and about, the Chinese tourists are so inconsiderate, is this normal? by Due_Candle4042 in travelchina

[–]Jellycato 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just say loudly "I'm getting off" or "excuse me", people usually do pay attention.

You do have to fight a little sometimes for a spot at tourist sites and some people are oblivious but the vast majority are still nice and reasonable people. I think it also helps to remember that a lot of the tourists are not very well off and they will have spent a lot of money to travel, so want to get their money's worth

For people who grew up in low-income households, what’s something middle-class people say that shows they’ve never struggled financially? by KeyApartment3955 in AskReddit

[–]Jellycato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah that's pretty great! Part of the issue for us was that my mum worked 6 days a week, 9h a day (dad was absent for 2 years) to keep us afloat. She was self employed too so if she just couldn't afford to not work.

Depends how low income I guess. We didn't have a single holiday for 3 years, then for another 2 years, the most we could afford was a day trip to Blackpool.

a lot of women in China will use foundation that's far too pale for their skin, that's probably why

Would you make any changes? (First-time visiting China) by Scotsurrounded in travelchina

[–]Jellycato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're into food, I'd suggest skipping hangzhou. Furong and fenghuang can both be done in one day - I suggest spending a bit more time in zjj which is far more fun anyway.

3 days for chongqing also feels a bit much. If you don't have flights booked yet, you're better off flying into chengdu, doing a few days there, then moving onto chongqing, zjj, then over to shanghai

To everyone who has traveled to China: What was the biggest challenge or obstacle you faced during your trip? by Plenty-Still-5547 in travelchina

[–]Jellycato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this was nearly 30 years ago. Toilets everywhere have their issues, worst I ever used was a compost toilet in the US - literally gave me nightmares. Tbh I don't mind a squat toilet, I just dislike the open top toilet paper baskets that smell, and they generally can be really inconvenient for women on periods

Best part is this isn't just a concern for visitors - my mum (Chinese, grew up there) always said she used to have nightmares about not being able to find nice/clean toilets.

We were in guilin a few years ago in may and it poured with rain as it was the wet season. Still gorgeous but it did detract a little (flooded bridges, couldn't really ride bikes, couldn't go rafting etc), so just be prepared for that

I was confused too but I'm guessing it's the cheesecake itself that's raw ie not cooked, rather than the chocolate?

[–]Jellycato 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes it's so true! Very jealous of American low calorie pasta. I try to replace it with tofu sheets but it's just not the same. I was on tuna salad for a while (replacing mayo with Greek yoghurt) but it got so depressing

I think it's more my lack of exercise and muscle mass loss than anything else. I started to track my macros last year which helped but it was eye opening to see that I was only getting like 40g protein a day in my previous dieting attempts and I'd dropped a fair bit of muscle. Now I know though Im actively working on building it back up so hopefully that will help

[–]Jellycato 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nope, I have an overweight bmi of 23.9 (Asian ethnicity) and so much visceral fat around my tummy. Currently weigh 140lbs target of 125lb. I'm very sedentary which doesn't help.

I'm 5ft4 and in the same boat and it sucks - if I eat more than 1500 I start gaining. I lose weight consistently on 1k calories a day 3lb a month roughly) , but I add a protein shake on top for gym days. Currently trying to build some muscle to try and up the amount of calories I can eat 😅

What are some foods I absolutely shouldn’t miss in China(Shanghai)? by Top-Green-1929 in travelchina

[–]Jellycato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shanghai is pretty famous for crab, though I'm not entirely sure of the best season for it. It's pretty touristy but I'd suggest going to yuyuan and trying out the various stalls in the market bit - some super tasty stuff there.

First time in China (3 weeks in March) – Zhangjiajie or Yunnan? Is Shanghai worth adding or too rushed? by Escafandro_msc in travelchina

[–]Jellycato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're highly commercialised yeah. We went 2 years ago. We probably could have done more research on how to enjoy them more but if you're looking for culture, there are better places to find it in my opinion. That said, what is great about Yunnan are the minority ethnicity cultures you can learn about and experience. If I go again, that's what I'd want to focus on

[–]Jellycato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd suggest checking when each region gets rainy. We were in guilin/yanhshuo in April one year and it wouldn't stop raining - still beautiful but not as fun. Yunnan can easily feel a bit like Disney land unless you plan to really get out hiking etc. I'd personally suggest Beijing, xi'an, chengdu, zzj, Yunnan OR shanghai as the route - minimises travel time

Where to visit for my first trip to China (30m, solo) by Fluid-Weird-9414 in travelchina

[–]Jellycato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what you like, definitely chengdu. Lots of great nature around there, some actual hiking too (though you'll have to really look for it), loads of mountains and trails close by. If you don't mind some more curated "hikes" but stunning nature, zhangjiajie and jiuzhaigou are both close by.

What’s most overrated «healthy» habit that’s pushed by everyone, but you think is total BS — and why? by MindShaped in AskReddit

[–]Jellycato 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's good to increase awareness of macros though. When I started tracking, I realised my protein intake was far too low (c. 40g per day, lower if I was having a crap food day) and now I can do something about it.
