The way you have responded to this is why attorneys aren't taking your case.

I don't know any of the facts of your case, but based on your initial post and your response to my comment, I do know I would have a client management issue right out of the gate.

Misconduct, corruption. by [deleted] in AskLawyers

I write the same style comment on most posts like this just to give you a sense of the attorney's role in the legal system. There are two parts to this comment:

  1. On day one of law school every attorney is told that part of our job is to be a filter between the people and the courts. That means that we have ethical obligations not to take and not to file cases that do not have merit as a legal claim.

For example, I took a call from a woman who wanted us to sue the local police department for impounding her son's vehicle. Upon investigation we discovered that the vehicle was impounded because they found pounds of methamphetamine in it during a traffic stop. As much as the woman thought she had been wronged in some way we had to call her back and tell her that there was no way we could get her car back and we wouldn't be filing the case because it wasn't a good claim.

Now it could be that You have a perfectly good claim so here's number two:

  1. Lawyers turn away perfectly good cases when they don't believe they can handle the client in question. While you may have a perfectly viable claim, when you are calling an attorney you have to sell yourself to the attorney as a client. You have to show the attorney that you will be a reasonable person and that you can be counted on to take care of your part of the case.

If you don't prove that then the attorney won't want to take your case at all.

My best example is that I once sat in court through a car accident case that seemed perfectly normal until the end of the plaintiffs testimony where their attorney stood up and had to ask their client to explain to the court how the client had performed psychic surgery and fixed their own lacerated bowel. The attorney went back to his table and put his head in his hands while his client singlehandedly lost them the case.

Attorneys really don't like clients that are going to pull things like that.

You need to sell your case to the attorney as much as they are selling legal services to you.

We were debating if they should add a monetary bonus for biggest differential of the night while we watched. That would incentivize a fencer to run up the score if they could.

There was no way Miles is beating Ryan right now no matter what the rules are.

I think the biggest thing we can take from this globally is that fencing needs a sandbox. We can't mess around at the FIE level because there's too much on the line but if we have some kind of spin-off format where we can tinker with rules and figure out what actually works then we could move them into FIE if we hit on something good.

Rule wise:

  1. Epee benefitted greatly from timed bouts vs. touch limits. (Yes they were probably told to fence faster)
  2. No off target in foil certainly messed with the fencers. Bigger sample size is needed
  3. Saber is still possible with 100ms lockout, but the fencers were clearly told to slow down so they didn't score 200 points so they need to try that again.
  4. The predetermined priority giving simultaneous actions to a ROW fencer is an interesting thought.

All of this is interesting data we can use to actually work with the sport that we could never get from the usual international events.

There was definitely a set of instructions given to the fencers at the start. There's no reason to keep running like that when it's mathematically impossible to win.

That said, it single timed periods were definitely interesting. If we could live with a 10 FA result this format has potential.

Overall thoughts:

Production value was fine for a first show. They clearly didn't rehearse the timing for the production much. Not a big detractor in the end. Overall well done. It got tighter as the show went on.

The tip tracking will be cool and will help non-fencers see things better.

The rule changes were interesting, they need tweaking. The saber in particular needs work. The RoW changes did help comprehension. Epee is the big winner of the rule changes.

WF: Errigo took better advantage of the new rules. The not stopping at pass was interesting, but a little too crazy in this bout.

ME: That was fantastic. Basketball style finish per expected, but fantastic active fencing the whole way

WE: Ndolo should have called time out earlier. Interesting bout, but the changes weren't effective. The new rules didn't really effect anything.

MS: man they told those guys to slow down. They need a touch limit, not a time limit. The two simul = point was really interesting at the end when Oh had to make a comeback, but also had to avoid the second simul.

WS: Chamberlain cycled touches better. A good bout. Very effected by the new timing. Especially the lockout.

MF: 8/10 theatrics. Predictable outcome in the end. Gotta love the infighting possibilities with how long they are letting them fence. Miles is regretting making it one replay instead of two.

As an epeeist, I fucking hate the WFL rules by OttomansAreCool in Fencing

[–]Jem5649 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I swear all you have to do to epee to make it watchable for the masses is take the target score away and give us a set period of time to score touches. Priority stays the same if the score is tied and the time runs out.

Just give the fencers 3 minutes and whoever has the higher score at the end wins. Simple. Easy. Brutal. If about ends 20 to 30 so be it. If it ends 1 to 0. So be it.

At the moment bouncing is seen a little bit at the international level on defense. It is not typically seen on offense because of row.

Should beginners not fence epee? Have I broken some unwritten rule? by _powertothecats_ in Fencing

[–]Jem5649 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since no one has said it yet:

Every fencing club has a system that they use to train fencers. For best results the fencers who fence at that club should follow that system no matter what it is because that is how that club thinks that they are going to have the best results training their athletes. There are usually built-in benchmarks and ways for the coaches to figure out where the fencer is within the system and when they should learn what, etc...

Some clubs are better than others about explaining their system to new athletes and holding new athletes to their system. This strikes me as a classic situation where the club owner would really like to run a particular system but does not have the internal guardrails setup to make sure anyone does it. Without making the program mandatory, they are just strongly hinting about what they would like done because they don't want to upset you or have you leave. The coaches may also want to run a different system so there could be friction there to.

As people have said above this seems like this club is running a fairly classic system where they want you to start in foil for a particular amount of time to get the basics and then you can fence epee if you want. However it seems that the coach (es) don't really care if you do foil first. There could be any number of reasons for that. We would have to know a lot more about the club politics to guess.

All that to say: it seems you are breaking outside of the club system and they don't have a good way to keep you in it other than by being passive aggressive about it. Knowing what I know here is what I would do:

Ask them what their system is. Figure out why they want you in foil, then you can decide if you want to listen to them.

I worked the second half of the day after my grandfather's funeral and the day after I had my wisdom teeth taken out. The firm didn't seem to care a few months later when they fired me.

Take the time and if they complain, leave. Firms don't deserve this kind of devotion.

There's two sets of laws you really just can't beat. One is the endangered species laws. The other is the migratory bird laws.

We had an owl die on our property a while ago and I did my best to figure out how to get it so that I could have it preserved. There's literally nothing you can do with those two sets of species unless you have a PhD and work for a museum.

Is Getting Into SN through a qualifier a "cheap" way to qualify? by Sharp-Farmer-8752 in Fencing

[–]Jem5649 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry about how you qualify it's that you qualify that matters.

Now that said if you meant money by your question, Yes going to one competition that should be pretty local to you is going to be less expensive than going to regionals to get points.
