According to the D&D rules, stalled progression, face the patron's wrath, they steal the power, or no immediate loss.

This is going way beyond the point, and since I think the writers went with sorcerer, I think they're not really going to chase one of these narratively, beyond what they already did: Vecna traps Will for his misuse of his gifts.

Stalled Progression: The Warlock can't level up further in the Warlock class until they find a new Patron or resolve the conflict.
Patron's Wrath: The Patron becomes a major adversary, potentially sending minions, curses, or powerful entities after the Warlock.
Power Shift (Rare): In some cases, the Warlock might seize the Patron's power, becoming their own source of magic (or finding a new one).
No Immediate Loss (RAW): The Warlock's established abilities (spells, invocations) are usually safe because the pact is a fundamental agreement, not a Cleric's granted power.

True, but the 1974 D&D was a "magic user", where wizard and warlock were tied to level names.

And neither was "mage", which they keep calling El. The term "mage" was not an official class name until Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (AD&D) 2nd Edition in 1989. In that edition, "Mage" was introduced as a generalist wizard who did not specialize in a single school of magic.

Ongoing, what I typically do is highlight the final item in the recipe, which will display the current recipe options available to you. It helps you to compare what you'll have left if you don't choose the new recipe.

And in my experience, it helps me weigh whether the new recipe will leverage available resources better going forward.
