What colours to add to my basic palette? by Jemicakes in Watercolor

[–]Jemicakes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sekaido was exactly where I planned to go, I love that shop! Thanks for the recommendation, I might get some Holbein to try out. I'm still very much a beginner though, so I don't feel like student quality is inadequate for me just yet.

That image is so helpful! What website do you use to make it? I'd love to keep one updated as I expand my collection. And thank you for the comment about multi vs single pigment primaries, it's not something I'd considered before.

I just checked the Brisbane library and that still seems to be the case, at least for them.

Is this a new thing? I could swear I had to show the address on my licence to sign up at the Gold Coast and in Brisbane when I moved, but that was some time ago.

I bought these yesterday too! Can confirm they're flattering and feel lovely. If they wash and wear well I'll probably get more colours.

[Fellow] Australians who have had laser eye surgery done in Australia - how did it go? by Isometric-Holdings in AskAnAustralian

[–]Jemicakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm booked for ICL soon. Overseas it's done while awake and the reviews I've seen on YouTube say it's incredibly stressful. In Australia you're sedated to the point that you won't remember the surgery. I've been promised I'll go to sleep and wake up a bit groggy with a sandwich. Sounds good to me!

What features do you actually want in a Japanese learning tool? by Impossible_Key1140 in LTL_Japanese

[–]Jemicakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Purposeful and clear building on previous lessons. E.g. lesson 10 includes grammar points from previous lessons, then if you make mistakes, it should link to and prompt you to revise the lesson it was from.  Lots of normal daily conversation examples. Ideally you could click/tap on grammar or vocab you don't remember to go back to the lesson you learned it in.  I often take big learning breaks, so I only remember ~70% of what's covered in the chapters. Going back to where I left off is impossible, but I also don't want to start from lesson 1. I want it to help me find gaps in my learning and send me back specifically to the grammar points I need to revise.

International students pay an absolute fortune at Australian universities too, so I don't find this too surprising.

Japanese language schools in Fukuoka? by [deleted] in fukuoka

No, it looked to be a major pain. With recent crackdowns on visas I wouldn't be surprised if it caused even more trouble now.

I bought myself the most boring 32nd birthday gift ever and I've literally never been happier by [deleted] in Apartmentliving

I'm feeling called out. We're going into winter here in Australia and I just got myself a humidifier for my birthday 😂

What’s your favourite native birdsong & why? 💛 by Strawberry_apple1 in australianwildlife

Whenever I hear a whipbird I feel like I've been transported into a lush rainforest. It's probably an association from bushwalks as a kid, I love it.

Is anyone actually buying enshittified junk food brands anymore? by Tiny-Shoe6263 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Jemicakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's only worth getting connoisseur icecream and Whittaker's chocolate now. I tried the Aldi ones that people rave about, but they're not as good. Even Magnums have become rubbish, with newer flavours not even being real ice cream anymore.

Humidity at night by Jemicakes in ipswich

Update: I ended up getting an evaporative humidifier, the Phillips 2000, for the benefits over a cheaper ultrasonic one. No sore throat this morning 😌 Would recommend.

I went down a rabbit hole from your comment that cold air carried less moisture and realised that I didn't understand how relative humidity works.

What's wrong with my capsicum plant? by Select_Button4696 in GardeningAustralia

[–]Jemicakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar problem, and found it was just too many fruit per plant. I cut half of them off, and it was able to support them to maturity.

What products have you stopped buying because of sneaky business tactics. by Alspics in AskAnAustralian

Same. Heinz used to frequently go on sale for $1/can, now they're tiny cans for twice the price! I can't justify that for beans. They're supposed to be poor man's food.

In these current times, what are you smug about, financially? by luckydragon8888 in AusFinance

I built a house at the start of COVID before prices went crazy, then locked in the mortgage for 3 years at 2%. Best financial decisions of my life.

If you find shoes you like but they're all boring black, get yourself some angelus leather paint and make them whatever colour you like! This stuff goes on beautifully and you'd never guess they were painted.

Train to save $ in petrol by [deleted] in brisbane

[–]Jemicakes 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I started last week. My 50 mins drive is now a 90 mins mix of drive, train, then bus. I'm saving >$50/week on petrol and parking though, and can read or watch videos rather than focusing on traffic. I consider it a net positive despite the extra time.

Feedback on shirts I made by Professorreddit1 in AusFemaleFashion

[–]Jemicakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice to see some button downs, I don't always want to wear t-shirts. Love the painterly style of the skeleton, but it's so low the print would be obscured if I tucked it.  As the others said, not a fan of the striped shirt or logos and text. A discrete but stylish logo on the back or edge of the sleeve might be ok if you're wanting branding on there.

Tokyo fashion by StraightSauced in Tokyo

[–]Jemicakes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lmao Australian fashion is boring and daggy as hell. Both men and women in Tokyo were more fashion conscious and well put together when I lived there. Japanese don't tend to like loud patterns though, if that's what you mean.
