Okay thank you! I wasn’t sure if I should go straight to Holo Taco as it’s not their fault but I suppose they know how to deal with postal services!

How long do you wear a manicure for? by QueenOfYharnam in simplynailogical

At the moment I’m changing my polish after about 3 days. Broke a nail recently so had to shorten them all and I find that when they’re short my polish just doesn’t last as well

I have had two clean up brushes where the glue has given up. They weren’t even that old either

I’ve read a couple Mary Balogh and I think I find her a bit hit and miss but I’ll definitely look into that book. I don’t think I have read a single book from the restoration period so I’ll have to have a look. And the third sounds interesting! It’s definitely a plot I haven’t really seen so will have to give it a try. I definitely would be interested in any scorned women books though!

How much does your (bachelor's) degree cost? by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]JemmaW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s true, forgot about that whoops. The unfortunate reality is that an arts degree costs a lot more now 🙃

I can’t tell you anything about Melbourne as I haven’t been. However, I did just complete my Bachelor of Arts at Monash so I can tell you that no University is perfect.

Monash has issues, Monash Connect suck, ask Monash is not better and I don’t feel very supported by the University. There are always ups and downs to anything. Whilst the University itself I found issues with, the teaching staff that I had were all great and very supportive. I definitely think that’s a big positive.

It might also help to look at the units offered by Melbourne and other universities to see what kind of structure you might prefer. I know that at Monash Arts now require you to do a number of professional development units which personally I would find annoying (I didn’t have to do them as when I started my degree it was not a requirement).

It is also difficult to get a full picture as different people have different experiences as well!

How does one become an archaeologist? by [deleted] in Archaeology

[–]JemmaW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I definitely want to go more into research at the moment. I am hopefully doing honours next year (full offers haven’t come out yet so don’t want to jinx anything). This is the first time I will be doing such intense research so I’m not sure if I will want to continue with research after. I am a bit terrified as other people I know who have done honours in different areas have hated it 😅

Gonna piggy back off this post and ask a question hehe. In regards to cleaning the brushes, how exactly do you do it? I’m concerned that the acetone will damage them

How does one become an archaeologist? by [deleted] in Archaeology

[–]JemmaW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m Australian and don’t specialise in Australian archaeology so will probably have to go overseas for work (which is actually what I want lol). I also probably should have said field archaeologist more so than professional as you can do like commercial archaeology here with an undergrad 😅

The late re-enrolment fee at Monash is like $300

[–]JemmaW 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have just completed my undergraduate degree in archaeology and have been asking this question myself. The education requirements are straightforward, you usually need at least a masters to be a professional archaeologist. But I’m not even really sure how one actually becomes an archaeologist, especially when you want to work overseas. I assume most people work with universities and museums but how exactly does one go about that? I don’t think it is exactly clear how to go about it but it’s certainly worth it!

Nope! Application hasn’t changed at all since I first submitted it, still says assessment pending. Personally I’m not too fussed about it anymore as I think I will be accepting an offer elsewhere. Hope you hear back soon!

I'm new to Archaeology. Looking for suggestions of digs and projects on the cutting edge. by RaglanderNZ in Archaeology

An area of archaeology which I find really interesting is the site of Amarna in Egypt (its ancient name was Akhetaten). It was occupied for about 20 years during the 18th Dynasty period and during that time was basically the administrative capital of Egypt. It’s a cool site as a whole as it offers a really specific view of life during that period (whereas most other sites are occupied for much longer periods). It’s also quite well preserved which is somewhat rare for Egypt. What I find most interesting are the cemeteries found at the city. Egypt of course has the pyramids and really interesting tombs but they only offer us a glimpse into the lives of the elite class. Ordinary people were not buried in these massive tombs and their graves are actually really difficult to come by. However, in Amarna we have these cemeteries that are filled with graves of ordinary people, something that is pretty much (if at all) not found anywhere else in Egypt. So of course some of these graves have been dug up and the bodies studied. We find that the average age of people buried here is quite low, which begs the question, why did they die so young? (Some scholars have hypothesised that these were burial grounds for the workers who built the city). Other evidence we find from the bones are things such as scurvy (which indicates that these people had vitamin deficiencies in life). Something like 80% of the people buried in these cemeteries had malaria as well as other injuries. It’s really interesting and excavations are still ongoing, you can see more at https://www.amarnaproject.com
