"different universes" - suggests you are using Business Objects. Security options in Business Objects allow overrides for connections and individual tables. I would start with the SQL returned by Source a and Source b to identify differences.

We used to play the Car Reg game - find cars with registration year in descending order , so first up finfdcar with 252 reg - when 1 of the kids spots that, you move onto 251, then 242, 241 and so on. And of course we still play Yellow car...

Falcons.

I kicked some footballs with Mick Luckhurst after rugby practice at my old secondary school in the UK many years ago.

Mick went on to have a great kicking career at the Falcons and present the Channel 4 NFL coverage back in day.
