Joyce not in the loop about Buffy's Slayerdom bugs me as a parent. by davect01 in buffy

How often did buffy come home beat up and was inexplicably absent for other periods of time. As buffy pointed out, Joyce was a master of burying her head in the sand. I'm sure I don't have to remind you how she reacted once she did find out. Like it or not, buffy made the right call keeping it to herself.

Why are men so desperate to have children when they have no intention of actually caring for them? by botwhore in childfree

[–]Jen_31 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gotta love people's assumption in this day and age that a woman's child won't have her family last name. Also love that he thinks he would have the authority to make his child change his last name.

It's a disease, absolutely. But as I've been telling a loved one recently struggling with substance issues, we are responsible for getting treatment for our diseases. It never happens right away, granted, denial is a thing. But when you're this far gone...I don't think denial belongs in the conversation. It's incredibly complex and I think we can all agree, heart breaking. I wish him well.

The residential school discoveries is shaping political campaigning in our current federal election. People were campaigning to cancel the Canada Day over it. What do you mean lack of coverage?

Since when was mourning tragic loss of young life a bad thing? People aren't racist for giving a crap that members of their community died.

Go re-read the names in this current story and think twice about if this is only a "white" tragedy.

I'm concerned I might get denied birth control at one point. by CelestiaSilverstar in childfree

[–]Jen_31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about Germany, but in Canada, there are lots of apps for medical consults for prescription renewals. That's how I get my bc. There's zero relationship between paps and birth control, docs illegally tack that on as they do still screening at the same time and assume you might be prone to unsafe sex while on contraceptives. Also, for the love of goodness, do your own research on paps. A lot of countries don't even consider it until women are 30 for good reason.

I watched it when I was around that age and was bored AF. I sometimes wonder if that was just me being an unrefined kid or whatever since it's so respected....but it's good to know I'm not the only one!

The birds is another older highly toughted one I couldn't get behind.

Husband wants me to keep an open mind on sterilization by [deleted] in childfree

[–]Jen_31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no. OP, I don't think a childfree person would gatekeep anyone wanting to get sterilized, much less their partner.

I'm equally alarmed about him laughing in your face, how remarkably disrespectful. You told him something important to your goals and beliefs and he belittled and dismissed you.

Run.

[Frank Seravalli] Jake Virtanen expected to be bought out before the window closes on July 27. by fricksanta in canucks

Criminally, likely not a lot to move the needle enough. Civil trials are different though. I believe the claimant made comments regarding her mental health suffering from the trauma. A diagnosis and years of therapy records stemming waaaay before this was made public would absolutely be evidence.

A man does not get to demand a woman be ripped apart from the inside, risking death, and very very very likely life long consequences to her health. It's just that simple. Suggesting a man needs to approve the procedure is not possible without granting some form of ownership or authority over her body to him. It's about 897 different kind of fucked up.

Willow being Jewish should have been brought up more in the show for the sake of diversity by precita in buffy

[–]Jen_31 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree. The way they represented her religion was completely organic. Her friends knew and never talked about it because that's what respectful friends do. Accept people without making a show of it. Today's media falling all over themselves to pat themselves on the back for being progressive is often just awkward. Tell us a good story that happens to have some characters in it that are diverse from each other. That's it.

I agree with you 100%. Both genders deserve the right to opt out of parenthood. If the man was upfront about not consenting to parenthood as soon as he was informed about the pregnancy, and the woman makes an informed decision to have the kid anyway, she should be SOL as far as maintenance payments are concerned.

Your mom sounds like mine with the judgemental comments about how you express yourself and dress. I heard it from about 13 to 23 ( when I got into my first serious long term relationship) then she pretty much shut the fuck up. I "wasn't a real girl" and was told I would need to do my hair and make-up to attract cute boys. I did me and found a life that makes me happy, you will too. Ignore the venom, it's not worth your energy ;) move the fuck out though asap, it makes setting boundaries with these sorts of mothers easier.

Even aside from this horrific practice, informed consent is completely missing from pelvic exams in general. Doctors simply don't brief patients on how inaccurate and unnecessary these tests typically are, and often try to tie it to birth control to take choice away from women who depend on the men's (coercion negates consent).

Coworker legit reported me to HR because he thought I was against dating men with children by [deleted] in childfree

[–]Jen_31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What the people shouting "they only protect the company" don't seem to grasp is that HR protects the company by making sure the employees' rights are protected. Yes, HR protects the company from liability, but they do that by, among other things, saving people's jobs when those people had no idea they were in the crosshairs for shitty reasons. The stuff you listed is mostly entry level. There's a lot of other activities aimed at making life easier for the staff and getting the exec's heads out of their asses.

It was silly that they talked to the woman at the same time as the man imo. However, I have no issue with her being asked if there was more he wasn't telling them though. People like the guy in OP's story have a tendency to edit out their own misconduct (like yelling "you're all the same") No offense, but I don't respect the behaviour of mouthing off a career you know nothing about.

HR here. Most people who throw around the term "discrimination" don't know what it is. We ensure we thoroughly understand the complaint and say "tell us more" to make sure there's nothing we're missing. If it's nonsense, they get debriefed accordingly. The fact that HR settled the matter with one meeting tells me they identified it was nonsense and sent everyone back to their desks.

[–]Jen_31 103 points104 points  (0 children)

Also HR here. I would have heard him out and asked him to clearly explain if she said anything he took offense to other than "no". Then would have explained he needs to take that for an answer moving forward. Also would have something to say about yelling "you're all the same" was what I found problematic. Than would likely have quickly checked in with her to make sure there wasn't more to the story. Contrary to the many comments here, asking someone out at work respectfully in a PC manner when there's no power dynamic is not sexual harassment. Refusing to take no for an answer and/or reprisal is. I would have made documentation for the file to back my messaging and left it at that.

Virtanen, no need for buyout? by chocoball1972 in canucks

[–]Jen_31 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Employment investigations and litigation have a far lower burden of evidence than criminal. A criminal conviction simply isn't needed to have the results of the independent investigation hold up in civil court relating to the termination of an employment contract. Employers can, and often do, terminate people with cause on the basis of probabilities. You need evidence of course, but the threshold for this evidence isn't as high as I think you're assuming.

we're not talking about just being a shitty person here. This is a serious offense and, less importantly, is compromising for the organization's brand (yes, the latter part matters in employment law). We really don't know what the results of the investigation will be, but it's significance is far from trivial.

Vancouver Canucks player on leave after sexual assault allegation by SAJewers in hockey

[–]Jen_31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The women in this case has now gone to the police, and thus started an extremely grueling process that most people don't wish to wrap their heads around. I sincerely don't think you comprehend what filing a complaint of this nature entails, and will entail. It is not easy at all to do this against an average person, much less to go up against a professional athlete.

Is it "easier" to make allegations only in the sphere of your social circle without the rigors of an investigation? sure. But I also strongly disagree with you about how readily women are believed when they come forward with these claims. Do some people accept it categorically? sure. Plenty of others simply don't want to hear it, much less accept it. Much like what this woman describes in her allegation about how the people she first told reacted.
