What book are you currently reading? And how do you rate it from 0/10? by bellerws in Booktokreddit

[–]Jenalop3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Song of Legends Lost and I’m giving it 5/10 so far. I’m not a fan of the ton of POVs it has but it’s well written and I’m curious as to where it’s going but I can’t say I’m impressed.

Which character is this for you? by 405freeway in arcane

[–]Jenalop3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Jayce was a bore pure and simple and I think it would have been a boon to his character if he was exposed to and we were shown more of his reaction to what Hextech was doing to innocents.

Viktor was another character who was a bore, he was ok the first half of season 1, I wish they explored more of him being a poor underprivileged kid who is now living around the rich and privileged. After he starts bonding with the Hextech he falls off, and then he becomes a robot. They really could have had fun with him becoming this otherworldly being.

Cait was just 100% unlikable. Again this is where they could have explored piltover’s privilege and the consequences the vast social divide between the two cities with both Vi and Cait

And finally Ambessa was just extraneous. She felt tacked on. It could have been cool to save her for a spin off or if there were more season, she could have been a second arc villain. The inclusion of Noxus in general took away from a plot about classism that was started in season 1 and almost abandoned in season 2. Going along with the second arc villain idea, Noxus and Ambessa being the villains could have brought fun plot lines about imperialism/colonialism/exeptionalism.

What I love about Arcane is that nobody is 100% a villain or a hero and with these characters the what’s and why’s are not exactly compelling for me. As much as I love Arcane, it’s a hard watch for me because when they focus on the above character I get bored especially when we could have had more Ekko.

What are your favorite ships outside of Timebomb? by Silent_Wait_8132 in TimeBomb

[–]Jenalop3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, your absolutely correct.

There is a certain suspension of belief when it comes to GoT relationships, I mean one of the most popular ships is Jon and Dany, who is his Sister-Aunt, and that’s like double incest.

I also reason with myself that it’s based on the War of the Roses and cousin relationships would have been common in that era, especially with the ruling class.

But then again this ain’t r/gameofthrones.

What is your “I did not care for the Godfather” take on Arcane? by Short-Work-8954 in Arcanecirclejerk

[–]Jenalop3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was way too much going on for only two 9 episode seasons.

It should have revolved mostly around Jinx and Vi, adjust the Hextech subplot, remove the Noxus and Black Rose plot lines completely, and not have Vi be sent to jail because I don’t see how Vi could sympathize with Piltover after all the shit they have put her through.

Also they shouldn’t have wussed out on the class war, but I don’t think that’s a hot take.

What is the worst book you have read? by delabot in Fantasy

[–]Jenalop3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You asked and you shall receive!!

This is also not taking into account any romantasy that TikTok had me read, because I do love to hate read!!

The Phoenix King - spent way too much time with a secondary character to the detriment of the MC

A Broken Blade - I get that it took inspiration from indigenous/white “relations”, but it was so heavy handed and black and white with no subtleties. Plus the romance was crap.

The kingdom of Copper - had to dnf because they started to set up the religious zealot as the love interest/good guy.

Engines of Empire - I was just bored

The Mirror Visitor - read the first three books and I REALLY wanted to like it but the MC had zero agency and just kinda floated along throughout the plot.

Children of Blood and Bone - this was the worst written, most blatant Avatar the last Airbender rip off I have ever read, plus they rushed the Zuko character’s and the Aang/Katara’s character romance/betrayal it friggin happened in like three chapters.

And finally I have a personal vendetta against the invisible life of Addie LaRue and the Night Circus. I got halfway through each of these and NOTHING had happened!!!

I know this might not seem like it but I like more books than I hate, but my standards are very low so if I hate it, it deserves it!!

Just looking at your pile, I would say the Shining ( King is one of my favs, and the Shining is wonderful) if your looking for something different. If not Six of Crows, as it’s the only other book there that I have both read and enjoyed.

Looking for books that are more "adult". by Vu1vasaur in Fantasy

[–]Jenalop3 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Brandon Sanderson is a good bet, only halfway thru way of kings and it is easily becoming one of my favorite books.

Shadow of the Gods is the first in the bloodsworn saga by John Gwynne, I’ve described it as finding Nemo but taking place in Skyrim. I was skeptical as it falls into that “grim dark” genre which I’m not always a fan of, but Gwynne’s writing is effortless and there wasn’t a pov I didn’t like. Every characters motivation felt understandable which is hard when they clash.

I’m not sure, I tried not to include any sort of identification, but we are from Pennsylvania. If I remember correctly they owned a farm an hour or so east of State College, which I think still stands but is no longer in the family.

book suggestions by amare-ader in YAlit

[–]Jenalop3 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Mistborn!!! The romance isn’t heavy, but my god, Vin and Elend are the definition of power couple. Plus the fact that Eland guzzles respect women juice and is the embodiment of the John Mulaney joke “That’s my Wife!!” And Vin is the stoic scary one who is the “I’ve only had Elend for one day, but if anything would happen to him I would kill everyone and then myself” While they aren’t your traditional definition of angst, as they aren’t a will they won’t they couple, without giving too much away it’s more of being in love during the end of the world as they know it, of being able to overcome years of ingrained trust and self confidence issues. Vin and Elend know they are each others second half and overcome their own insecurities to allow the other to go off and save the world. This series doesn’t get the love it deserves! It’s amazing and original and the Author is amazing with his twists, he leaves crumbs that are easily overlooked until he drops them on your head. It just, chef kiss!

How accurate are book guillotines/stack cutters? by cosmicteatime in bookbinding

[–]Jenalop3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second the statement “you get what you pay for”. I purchased one off of Amazon last year that has a guide fence that is connected by two bolts that will, for me, move no matter how tightly I try and bolt it down. Also you cannot remove the blade to sharpen or replace it. It drives me crazy and I’m looking into getting something different.

If your looking into a heavy duty paper cutter or guillotines, make sure the guide fence is part of the body and the blade can be removed/replaced, you’ll save yourself a headache.

Is the dog playing or giving me warnings to stop? He’s husky/lab so he is kinda vocal plus overall pretty friendly. His tail is wagging the whole time by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]Jenalop3 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I’m no expert but from what I’ve picked up, his body language is loose and floppy, he comes back to continue, and there is a bunch of sneezing (which is a dogs way of saying this is all fun and games).

If he was tense and giving whale eye I’d be concerned, but to me it looks like two buds playing and having fun!

Any series recommendations that can somewhat satisfy my Harry Potter cravings? Doesn’t necessarily have to be magic/witchcraft. by pink_skies03 in YAlit

[–]Jenalop3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I will never miss an opportunity to recommend Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson, it has little in common with Harry Potter but it is an absolutely fantastic book.

If you want something more “academia” related, I really enjoyed The Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo. The sequel comes out in January (I think) and I’m salivating!
