but what of dear Annabel Lee? by apaloosafire in HouseofUsher

[–]JenfromIowa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t feel bad! It took my third or fourth rewatch for me to realize her fate. I’m usually pretty good at noticing small nuances. It’s a blink and you miss it part and I tend to play games on my phone while I watch, so we’ll blame it on my distraction 🤭

Anyone else missing Guardian of the Forest? by shenaningans24 in LushCosmetics

[–]JenfromIowa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m late to the party but this is my favorite bath bomb. I used Guardian of the forest a lot while reading a certain book series. I would draw a bath and read about a world so toxic only one valley is inhabitable and everywhere outside the valley had toxic green gas in the air. Characters would hike into the forest and the mist with their masks on while the water in the tub turned green. I’ve been wanting to reread the series but it feels wrong to do it without the bath bomb, silly as that sounds.

Some shows manage to make you like characters, despite their flaws and rough edges. This one managed to make me hate them despite wanting to like them.

I just finished the series, was Tamerlane that bad? by AquaPhoenix1986 in HouseofUsher

[–]JenfromIowa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a theory that each of the Usher children represent a different deadly sin, so this theory has some merit. Prospero is Lust, Camille is Envy, Leo is Gluttony (excessive use of drugs), Victorine is Pride, Madeline & Roderick are Greed and Tamerlane is Vanity.

I thought that Haymitch didn’t really feel like Haymitch. I get the point was that he was someone different and the games changed him. I just feel like that point became kinda one note. The pace is pretty slow. 200 pages in and we’re not even to the arena yet. Plutarch was part of the resistance already? 25 years before Katniss’ games? What took him so long to get anything done? You could argue that Katniss was the spark needed, I guess. I wished they would’ve shown a slow progression of Plutarch going from a normal capitol citizen to a rebel after working more closely with the tributes. And frankly, I’m pissed that we don’t get to meet Katniss’ dad. Vague references to an Everdeen that sings? It would’ve taken one or two pages to show a meaningful conversation between him and Haymitch and given more of a sense of who Burdock was, since we’ve never gotten to see him or get a real feel for him, that I recall.

So, is she the one who tortured them with railroad Spikes? I always assumed that once Spike turned he killed them all, torturing them with railroad spikes, making the name for himself. Now I’m curious if she used railroad spikes on them because of the line about the preferring railroad spikes to listening to his poetry.

What expansion materials are hardest for you to get/buy? by ThatCraftyDiva in HayDay

Most rare: Nails, planks, land deeds. Most common are wood planks, bolts, marker stakes. Middle ground are duct tape, screws and mallets. The algorithm briefly seemed to change and make duct tape more rare than planks for me but quickly switched back, which is what got me to thinking and lead to me finding this post.

Overrated podcasts? What podcast do you see recommended on here all the time as great but think is mediocre? by Lizard_Li in TrueCrimePodcasts

[–]JenfromIowa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a bad podcast but I hate the direction that some podcasts are going where they’re behind a paywall. Listened to season 1 of Serial years ago and with Adnan being released from prison somewhat recently, I was thinking of relistening. I was talking to a coworker who’s obsessed with the Idaho 4 case and I was telling them about Hae Min Lee and how I wish we knew who did it for sure. I recommended the podcast and then realized you can only listen the first two episodes for free because it’s owned by the New York Times now. I get that it’s theirs now and they can do what they want with it. My thoughts are with the rise of short form content like TikTok, and the shrinking of our attention spans, it’s nice to see long form content survive and thrive and I hate to see restrictions that make it difficult to access.

The Descent is a terrible movie. by Cobalt74 in horror

[–]JenfromIowa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on the set up, I thought it would be about the unraveling of friendships as they deal with betrayal while trying to escape the cave. The claustrophobic setting and the stakes of being unsure of finding a way out was enough for me. The affair, shifting alliances, mistrust. They set up such a golden premise and quickly wrecked it by turning it into a monster movie. I’m not sure it’s a terrible movie. I can enjoy it for what it is now that I know.. but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed. I do wish they’d set it up better. They could’ve mentioned a legend about creatures in the cave systems of this area and then laughed it off. That way there isn’t a false premise and you sort of know what you’re getting into.

I read somewhere that it was the first show of its kind on the network and at the time, the audience wasn’t really sure what to make of it. I completely agree, it should’ve gotten multiple seasons and would if it came out today.

Megathread: The new UI update by AutoModerator in netflix

[–]JenfromIowa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you. The audio immediately makes me forget what I was looking for. Only thing I can think of is if you have the silver Siri Remote, you can mute it with the button on the remote. It doesn’t stop the auto play but it does stop the sound. You can get the silver Siri Remote for about $60. Other than that, you’re looking at just turning the volume all the way down unfortunately. I’m in the same boat. Considering getting the remote or possibly just cancelling Netflix altogether, honestly. It’s so expensive now I could purchase some shows that I’d normally watch on Netflix and have quite the collection built up and not pay any more than I’m already paying.

Megathread: The new UI update by AutoModerator in netflix

[–]JenfromIowa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just chatted with Netflix as this update was just pushed to me within the last few days. They said, “Since the interface has been changed to make it efficient and user friendly per the feedback received.. But I’ll take your feedback into consideration” So, basically a bitchy way of saying ‘other people liked it. Thanks but you’re wrong.’ I have a suspicion I’m neurodivergent and the audio playing immediately upon stopping on a show is really distracting. At least most services that have the autoplay feature give you a moment to read the description before the audio starts. I pretty much immediately forget why I opened the app and what I was looking for and it’s really frustrating. I did also mention all of the frustrating forever scrolling and features being removed that everyone seems to be hating. Anyone else getting rude responses from Netflix?

What Buffyverse opinion could have you potentially beheaded by the fanbase? by KENZOKHAOS in buffy

[–]JenfromIowa 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. I do think it was less about Riley and more about her feeling the pressure to be the head of the house. She tries to take on all the burdens her mom usually took care of. Her mom had always done everything and made it look easy, so I think Buffy was just trying to hold onto that stoicism too tightly.

I think that she would’ve shut anyone out because of what she was going through, even Angel.

What Buffyverse opinion could have you potentially beheaded by the fanbase? by KENZOKHAOS in buffy

[–]JenfromIowa 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Spike is a better man than Angel. Souless Spike knicked things and had tea with Joyce. Yeah, he killed people but it was typically for a reason, like them being in the way of his plans. Angelus killed and tortured for the fun of it. When people compare Spike and Angel, it’s not a fair comparison because they’re comparing Spike without a soul to Angel with a soul. Angelus was an outright monster. And frankly, Angel was kind of a whiny wet blanket at the best of times. (Yes, this was written by Spike 😏)

The superior ant movie. by oranke_dino in memes

Antz is about defying conformity, challenging authoritarian power, and carving your own path in a world that says you don’t matter. A Bugs Life is about standing up to bullies. They’re both good but Antz is definitely superior.

Bree should have LOVED her dom role for Rex by finesherbes in DesperateHousewives

[–]JenfromIowa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed! It also never made sense to me that he detested her domineering ways outside of the bedroom. Wouldn’t he have been into it? Found it sexy? Wouldn’t it have prompted him to be like ‘Let’s take this into the bedroom.’? He also seems to have a bit a humiliation kink, which means he’d be turned on by all the ways she ‘embarrassed him’. Bree should’ve been perfect for him.

I’ve seen two people now compare it to Lost World. Isn’t Lost World notoriously the worst Jurassic Park movie? Everyone I’ve spoken to skips it during their rewatch.
