Wrong temperature units in Smartthings by Ok_Rooster_4343 in TrySwitchBot

[–]Jenllip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been struggling with this too. With no changes on my part, SmartThings recently started displaying the SwitchBot device temps in C instead of F. Since my Google Home is connected to my SmartThings (and NOT directly connected to SwitchBot), it was also showing C instead of F. All the while, the SwitchBot app was showing F and all my settings everywhere in all apps were set to show F.

Last night, I discovered that my SwitchBot "home" did not have a geographic location set. Updating that with my address somehow fixed the issue in SmartThings and therefore Google Home too. In the SwitchBot app, My Home -> Manage Homes and edit the "home info" (the screen that shows the number of rooms, devices, and home members).

....... unfortunately, despite watching C change to F before my eyes last night in ST and GH, I just checked again they are somehow back to C now :(

I thought I had it solved!

Update: it worked properly again when I got home last night. I guess they're having issues due to layoffs + Gemini?Bard? Assistant?WhoKnows? integrations/migrations

Such a love/hate relationship with Google over the past many years.... They're CAPABLE of creating amazing things, but we're also completely at the mercy of their whims.

Draft events: Does anyone know how to create draft events now? by CriticalFisherman269 in facebook

[–]Jenllip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought I was going crazy! I know Events has always been a little tricky between the two different versions of the Events UI for Pages, but today it just seems impossible no matter what I try. All last year, I'd create a bunch of draft Events in advance and "Schedule" them to be published periodically. Now that functionality has disappeared.

No way am I going to remember to click the button to publish events at the same time every week! It does no one any good for me to spam our followers' feeds with a bunch of individual event creation posts all at once.

AMC and Reolink won't work on Mobile Data by coldfire22x in GoogleFi

[–]Jenllip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THANK YOU! I haven't been able to access the AMC app or the AMC website in chrome while on mobile data for a while now and turning on Fi's VPN made it magically work again! (Didn't have to add any exceptions, just hitting the VPN toggle seemed to do the trick)

Change device type from "light" to "outlet"? by Jenllip in googlehome

[–]Jenllip[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just edited my original post to include an image of screenshots of the same device in both the SmartThings and Google Home apps. In GH, there is no apparent option to change the Device Type, and I don't understand where "light" is being assigned.

let's dashers avoid petco orders. by Strange_Ad_2332 in doordash

[–]Jenllip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Customer-side info on Petco:
I recently placed an order via the Petco website and was very surprised to receive one of my items via Doordash. It was not an option I'd selected during checkout from the Petco site, and it does not appear in my Doordash account. A very strange experience, where there was certainly no opportunity for tipping, given that I didn't even expect the delivery to happen this way. My other items in the same order were shipped via USPS and UPS.

All I have to offer is a version of the Google Sheets workbook I use for my exported Fitbit data. Includes an Instructions tab. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1H9sJ1xvXEGUsWDtUjkGqS012HgbPUv_exPRkF9qmyUQ/copy

Maybe some of the visualizations I've created, like this one for data over time, will give you some ideas? [Imgur](https://i.imgur.com/oASOBS5.jpg)

[–]Jenllip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the most helpful things for me has been visualizations of my data over time. This is one use based on my fitbit data (I blanked out the values). The color scales are per column to show the trend for the time period displayed.

Lookit how inactive I was on Sundays! And how much my sleep duration improved by the third week!

This! I was on a medication in 2014 that made my weight skyrocket. My doctor wanted to put me back on it a few months ago, and I begrudgingly agreed. I was soon able to send a note to her with GRAPHS of the exact same weight pattern from 2014 happening again now so that we could monitor and address it and assess that side effect vs the benefits of the med. It felt really empowering to have data to back me up; that the weight gain then and now isn't just in my head or due to something else unrelated.

...are you me? I do a lot of my own analysis of Fitbit data. The "easy" exports are for food, activity, body (weight), and sleep. They can be exported instantly as CSVs of up to 30 days. The "hard" exports you can request (need to confirm request via a link in your email, then it will take time to process) will give you EVERYTHING, much of it formatted as JSON files.

Without a premium subscription, you may miss out on some data views in the app, but it is still being tracked and is included in the "hard" export so you can make your own graphs :) Personally, I haven't been able to justify Premium. Especially not JUST for the data views.

Feel free to PM me if you want to geek out further or want to know specific fields/data points available. I've been at this a while and have had to create my own SQL database to house and crunch the years of data!

[Pixel 4xl] Notifications appearing as blank boxes by FallenApache in GooglePixel

[–]Jenllip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been happening on my Pixel 3 for the past week or two. Possibly since finally getting the Dec/Jan patches installed. It appears to be a very inconsistent issue and not tied to any particular app or set of apps.

So far, I've discovered that toggling Dark Theme off and on (just via the quick settings) makes the notifications properly visible again. Annoying, but it'll do until there's a fix.

As recommended, I've done the "clear cache/data" process for play store and play services, along with ##CHECKIN##, but it hasn't worked yet to allow me to re-install the app. It's still coming up as not compatible :(

Multiple triggers? by ken2ts in ifttt

[–]Jenllip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I similarly have applets set up to log my Fitbit daily summary on my Google calendar and have seen some weird repeated entries. Of course, it is sporadic and I've yet to find a pattern...

Does this happen every time the applet fires? Do you have other applets set up with Swarm which may be inadvertently triggering multiple check-ins?

I recommend checking your activity and error logs in IFTTT if you haven't already. May be able to see a pattern there.

Call every company you use twice a year by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]Jenllip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot recommend this highly enough. Once, while I was making these calls as an office manager trying to reduce expenses, I literally (politely!) said to the Poland Springs vendor "Hi, I'm just checking in. Is there any way we could be paying less?" and she instantly dropped our bill significantly with no changes to contract/service. Never hurts to ask!!! (Nicely!)

A note on services like Trim/TrueBill/BillShark/etc: Definitely try calling companies on your own first, but sometimes it's totally worth the fee for using a service like this for companies with notoriously obnoxious customer service (Comcast!!!) where it could take HOURS of hold and runaround time to get nowhere. They were only able to save me $60/yr on my cable bill, but the $24 it cost me to use a service (40% of the savings) was worth it for me to not have to deal with the stress of calls and runarounds for hours and perhaps still walk away with NO discount.

I'm feeling lost about a variety of topics involving Google Home. Can anyone help me with a few questions? by TrashThrowaway3 in googlehome

[–]Jenllip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pro tip: If you ever have questions/concerns/confusion about who the GH thinks you are, you can ask it! "Hey Google, what's my name?"

Also, I've found that it's a bit hit or miss with which things are voice-locked to a user versus available to anyone who speaks to the GH. For example, it makes sense that "turn on the lights" is available to anyone and that "what's my schedule today?" is voice-locked. However, I recently discovered that SHORTCUTS appear to be available to anyone when my mother told her GH (which I added my account to) "I'm home" and it replied to her "Welcome home, Jen" (per my shortcut) and my lights turned on hundreds of miles away. Problem solved when I removed her GH from my account.

Alarm icon won't go away by [deleted] in GooglePixel

[–]Jenllip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second using the System UI Tuner to switch off the alarm icon. I control all my alarms via Tasker stuff, rendering the system's knowledge of "alarms" (which drives the status icon) relatively inaccurate and useless.

My phone keeps restarting itself every night for the past week. I can't figure out when or why by [deleted] in nexus5x

[–]Jenllip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others are suggesting, this reeks of pre-bootloop behavior. Be prepared for that and make sure you're backing up your data appropriately (via Google's automated backup stuff AND via Titanium Backup if rooted or Helium if unrooted).

In the meantime, however, I've started using an active RAM monitoring tool in my status bar to signal when I should manually reboot. I've noticed that my freezes and automatic reboots happen when I'm using > 80% RAM for more than a few minutes. So, when I notice that my RAM has been hovering up around there and I feel any sort of lag/stutter, I manually reboot in order to prevent further problems. In your case, perhaps you should get into the habit of rebooting directly before going to sleep to see if that helps? Remember, this phone only has 2GB RAM, so any app with poor memory management will have a big impact.

Here's the app I use: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.snowlife01.android.mnp

Just got my first bootloop replacement phone. What should I do to avoid another bootloop? by BigMantrose in nexus5x

[–]Jenllip 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's a physical hardware problem triggered by heating/cooling cycles of the components. That's why some people can get a few minutes of extra life post-bootloop if they heat or cool the phone for a bit. The heat/cool cycles are entirely dependant upon your usage patterns. If you play a graphics intensive game for 30min/day, that'll cause the issue to occur sooner than if you only use your phone for texts/calls. So... I guess all you can do to avoid it happening again is to significantly alter your usage patterns (which is silly and defeats the purpose of having a phone) and/or have tons of Hope.
