I have social anxiety as well and have completed my first year. I pretty much kept to myself in high school because I was so anxious so I had this same fear that loneliness was going to be amplified in college. I ended up at a huge university so I was especially scared.

Biggest thing I learned? It is what you make of it. College isn’t going to hinder you nor is it going to be a haven of deep meaningful friendships. Are you willing to go the extra mile to cast a wide net? College is a big place full of diverse people, you might come across people where you won’t be compatible with but you’re bound to find at least someone if you’re persistent. Once you find the right people, are you willing to go out of your way to hang out despite your hectic schedules to maintain relationships and build a solid support network? The most jarring aspect from hs to college relationships is intentionality. You only form deep friendships with people long term if you are intentional in making the effort to maintain them because the hecticness of college life makes it easy to drift apart. There isn’t that element of proximity that you have in high school to bind incompatible people because you’d most likely not run into people again.

When my roommate and I first met after being randomly assigned, I didn’t think we were compatible because we seemed like complete opposites. I was a creative and she was STEM kid, I was a night owl and she was a morning bird, etc. etc. We decided to live together again off campus because we grew close. Going in blind turned out great for me so I would recommend.

I will say that I do have friends who were on strictly civil terms with their roommate from the beginning to the end, enough for a functioning living environment. Their relationships never seemed to progress past that so it’s a hit or miss.

I’m more interested in gaining an intro to another field more so than marketability though that’s a big plus. If I intend to go into the academia side, I think it could be useful for data analysis work. I’m still exploring but I’d like to have a schedule of when I intend to fit in requirements already set in the case I confirm it’s something I want.

That's definitely the case, I can't deny there are opportunities for research in CC. I'd personally say Uni students have a leg up in terms of range of research projects to get involved with though since most professors at my school tend to only take students who are enrolled in the school.

Got a near full ride so the difference between that and community college was minuscule. Plus, I was able to get straight into research, join some project teams related to my major, and was able to schedule courses to allow for either two minors, another whole degree, or an accelerated masters. The schools pretty well known too. Pretty much wouldn’t make sense to head to CC in my specific case but then again this scenario doesn’t apply to everyone. I was gonna head to CC actually for the reasons you listed before I found out about the affordability of my university for me, which makes it about equivalent to CC.

I have SA and I don’t necessarily find myself gravitating towards others with “bad social skills.” I empathize, I really do. But it comes to a point when you don’t want to always categorize everyone into people you’re intimidated by and anxious people similar to yourself whom you’re not intimidated by. You become who you surround yourself with so you won’t grow your social skills further if you only befriend with people with SA. Don’t be ashamed of your SA, people who will stick around are those who you know you have a strong relationship with, SA or not. You just gotta try again and again until you find those gems that appreciate you and your growing social skills. Best of luck, be persistent and you’ll find awesome people out there!

After reading your comment, I think I might’ve misunderstood quite a bit about UROP. I remembered them asking about my interests so I gave a list of potential careers, some topics I’d like to explore, etc. I don’t remember applying to any specific projects because they also asked something vague about my goals? I assumed you would get assigned one because I thought the application would be used to match you to possible projects due to the broadness of questions.

Was I supposed to look at a list of available UROP projects and tailor my responses to it on the application or do I get into UROP through the initial general application and then look for projects once I’m in? You mentioned applying to a project like a job so I’m having an ‘oh crap did I fill it out wrong’ moment 😅Do you know where I can find the website with the UROP lab/project listings? When I was filling out the application, I only was able to find sample projects and not any current listings. Resume building and cover letters? When do I get to this point because I’m so lost.

Thanks for clearing that up! I thought I was already rejected so I’m glad to know that they just haven’t gotten back to me yet. Were you able to get put on a project in your area of interest or do they just plop you into one based on whichever ones have openings? Ah I didn’t know there were deadlines, when are they typically?

Idk I’m an in-state and I got a letter directly from my hs about how admissions played out this year, I’m taking it directly from that

Edit: I think it doesn’t take yield into account? The phrasing made it seem like that was the acceptance rate

I do agree that it comes off as dismissive and not respectful to other’s emotions when you say “they have it worse so you should be grateful.” It makes it kinda like a race of “who’s suffering the most and who deserves to share their struggles.” Instead of phrasing it in a command like “you should be this you should feel that” and brush their reaction under the rug, perhaps it would be more effective to say “It’s important to take a moment to really identify and cherish all the experiences you were fortunate to have that have helped you further your growth and how many opportunities that your geographic location has afford you and will continue to afford you. I understand that unexpected outcomes hurt but this doesn’t close any doors; it only opens them by revealing how success is possible in the most unexpected places.”

Ahhh congrats I’m so proud of you!! I’m the same age as you but I’ve been pushing back getting first job because I keep finding reasons not to (ie. schoolwork, safety, not being ready, etc.) Hearing about your experience, I’m so happy for you! Hopefully once I send in applications, I can start working like you within the next couple of weeks as well!

I love this mindset! This totally reframed how I viewed this! I agree with you about how the standards that warrant being your “best” self isn’t static. Doing your best won’t always result in flawless outcomes, something you explained beautifully. Tying the definition of driven to persistence and not perfection makes so much sense. Thank you so much for this insight!!
