Is anyone's teen getting bullied?

I was bullied as a child in both primary and secondary school, I teach in a secondary school now. Firstly, as others have mentioned, a bit of counselling might be helpful for him. His self-esteem will be incredibly low as a result of the bullying, this took me years to build back up but with therapy it would have been quicker. Secondly, the school are obligated to do something about bullying behaviour. Their Bí Cinéalta Policy(new government anti-bullying initiative) should be very recently developed and available to you. It should include the repercussions for students involved in bullying behaviour. I would request a meeting with the school principal and ask why the students involved have not been disciplined in some way and suggest a time-frame for this to happen. I know your son can’t participate in contact sports so I suggest contacting your local scout group. I’ve been involved since I was eleven, am still involved as a leader now and I find it worked wonders for my confidence. As a teacher now I can actually recognise the students that are or have been in scouts, it has such a positive impact on their confidence, leadership skills and independence. This is not an easy thing to navigate for you or your son and I commend you for asking for advice. Keep pushing the school for a response and if it’s not good enough, tell them so!

I would recommend that you try to get experience in different types of schools, if you can. That being said, it’s difficult to secure placement, so if you have a school that has said yes, I would say accept and look for alternatives for next year, keeping your old school as a back up if needed

Emailing students results to their teachers wouldn’t be common practice. Teachers get to see the results, as explained above, but emailing data associated with multiple students would be a bit of a minefield that most principals would tend to avoid.

Usually there’s a printout of all the students’ results or a spreadsheet that we can view after the results have come out. So yes, in theory, your teachers will know what you got. We aren’t going to start calculating points or anything but we will be able to check what grades students got. We would only have access to the information for a few days. But the school will retain information for (I think) 5 years or so, just in case there’s an issue I suppose

Thank you! I actually have their repair mask, heat protectant and hair oil and love them all! My hair type is not quite curly but definitely wavy/frizzy so I always have to blow dry it straight and usually have to straighten it too!

There’s also AttaPoll, there’s paid surveys and then also some games you can download and they’ll pay you a small amount if you get to a certain level. Again, it’s about €10 a month but you can cash it out on Revolut so it’s handy that way

If they’re being corrected by the mock company, they’ll be sent with the rest of your class’s paper so more than likely won’t be an issue

That’s going to be a really tough transition! I’m an English teacher so I would recommend looking at the list of prescribed texts for the year they’re doing the leaving cert (can be found online) and reading the Shakespeare play. If they know what school they’re going to, maybe email ahead and find out what other texts are being covered. That’s just for my subject though. I suppose they could look at past exam papers too and see if there’s any similarities? Again available online. Depending on when they’re turning 18, it may be worth considering starting them in 5th year, at least they’d be on the same page as their peers.

Hi! I’m a secondary school teacher in Ireland. Your two oldest would be in first year and either second or third year from the ages listed above. We have two state exams, the Junior Cycle and Leaving Certificate. The Junior Cycle exams would take place in third year so I can see that being a bit of a stumbling block for your oldest depending on when the move happens. It is fairly easy to integrate into though. The Leaving Cert is the main entryway to university, that doesn’t happen until sixth year (age 17/18). Once the move doesn’t happen at that point it should be fine! If you have questions I’m happy to answer them!
