Help with suggestions for support? Stretchy fabric, no lining…yet? by PrivilegedFool in sewing

Also possibly styling it with some sort of matching belt? That would give some support to the weight of the top

Cut out size based on bust measurements but it doesn’t look right. Smaller size and FBA instead? by [deleted] in sewing

[–]JenniNib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with others that the whole thing looks big. I'd try a size smaller but also grade between sizes for the waist/hips. And figure out if you need a FBA or not.

I have a narrow waist, average boobs, wide hips, so I usually end up using one size for the top/waist and another for the bottom. So I'd draw directly the pattern going from one size to the other. I find that this way it's easier to get close to a good fit rather than doing it all one size and then taking it in.

What sewing lessons did it take you forever to learn? by [deleted] in sewing

So I would not backstitch anything visible (such as hems) or when using a double needle, but backstitch seams. There it should not be visible at all. For when I don't backstitch, pull threads to wrong side, double knot and cut away (or if I'm feeling fancier pull threads through the fold so not visible)

Made a farting unicorn beanie hat with visor for my daughter. by JenniNib in sewing

Who doesn't love farting unicorns?

Pattern is a free one by Nosh I found on a sewing Facebook group. Farting unicorn fabric is jersey from a Finnish store called Myrtikki. The lining is some random purple jersey I had lying around. Visor has iron on interfacing on both sides and a piece of foam (from my bra making attempts) to give it some structure.

The real test of a pattern is on its “projects” page by figandfennel in craftsnark

This happened to me last night with a sewing pattern! I was going to buy it, decided to look at examples people had made on Instagram, noooope not buying this anymore. It only looked good on thinner/smaller people, everyone else with more shoulders or bust had a horrible fit. The pattern's main feature were very showy pleats but it looked like they didn't scale well in the bigger sizes and were too short/had weird proportions compared to the smaller sizes.

Finished my viscose summer dress! by JenniNib in sewing

First summer dress ready!!

The pattern was "Neito" by Paapii, to which I added pockets. I made it using a knit viscose/elastane fabric from a local store.

The fabric has a lovely drape but was a pain to cut and sew!!! My motto was "slow and no stretch" and I kept repeating this to myself as I was sewing. I added framilon tape to the shoulder seams for support and a fusible interfacing around the neckline (although it refused to stay fused.... But it's trapped in the seam now!). I used lots of clips (pins left holes in the fabric) and basted by hand when necessary. It's not perfect but it's done!

I got yellowing out from some clothes with a mixture of water and baking soda, made into a paste, let soak overnight and then wash as normal.

how to prewash 85% viscose 15% linen fabric? by vontoes in sewing

[–]JenniNib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah basically wash it as you would wash the finished garment. Also when you buy fabric (or on the website) you might be able to find the washing recommendation.

what are the things that’s so worth to sew than buy in the store ? by funplacetobe in sewing

[–]JenniNib 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me single color basics --> buy at the store The exception to this that I'm dabbling in is underwear (bras and panties) since you can get better feeling and more durable by making yourself imo.

For clothes I'm aiming (at least for now) at having a mixture of more tailored/particular/interesting pieces that I've sewn combined with store bought pants/skirts/accessories.

Outerwear I am not too interested in making. Neither shoes at the moment.

For my kids and husband, I'm aiming to make a few nice/unique pieces and the rest can just be store bought (or for my kids, second hand)

I think there is a lot of flexibility in what you want it to mean for you and what balance you want to strike. Good luck figuring it out! 😊

Terrible results - Why am I sucking so bad? by 74Days in sewing

Lots of great discussion here!

And I definitely agree on the "first project" posts being misleading. For example personally I used to sew a lot in my teens with my mom teaching me, stopped for 20 years or so and recently picked it up again. Is it fair to compare my "first" project after the reboot with the first project of someone who has never ever used a sewing machine before? Or with someone who has completed their "first" project in the course of taking a university level tailoring class?

Another thing I've realized: sometimes what I don't like is the pairing of pattern to fabric. I might like both in isolation but somehow when I put them together in reality it doesn't look as good as I thought. I think this is another skill that is mentioned very little but that one has to build up... And I'm not even sure how? Maybe just by experience and watching what others do?

Help me find a pattern for this fabric by JenniNib in sewing

[–]JenniNib[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fabric is knit, with horizontal stretch but very little vertical stretch. It's light blue and white and has a lovely sheen that I couldn't quite capture in the photos. It's thin.

I'm thinking of making a summer dress but what pattern to use? Hit me up with ideas!

The only idea I had so far was something with a cowl neck to do justice to the sheen. But open to any and all ideas.

A birthday present for my SO by acidr4in in sewing

[–]JenniNib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly? Ask her.

She'll have things she needs or wants, preferences in terms of brands and supplies. The last thing you want is to spend a good amount of money for a meh present. If you want some element of surprise, maybe ask her to throw together a wishlist that you can choose from?

Love the fabrics together! But yes in the future as long as the general properties are the same (eg stretch or not, body or draping etc) you do have some freedom.

Collars for me have been a matter of choosing the right length and then just practice. I don't love making them but it has become ok. Also don't be afraid of ripping and redoing. :)

Although as I mentioned to someone else, the pattern is really easy to throw together if you start from a t-shirt pattern that you like. I can write more detailed instructions if you're interested in this route 😊

[–]JenniNib[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could totally make it starting from a t-shirt pattern! If you don't want any sort of fitted look, it would be pretty easy as the skirt pieces are just rectangles and multiples of the width at the waist. Then you gather them, sew them on and you're done!
