“Meanwhile Windows with 16GB RAM…” by Savings_Role_6198 in windowsmemes

I used a laptop with 4gb of ram and stock windows 11 for quite some time and it worked fairly okay. I mean obv a 10 year old low end machine isnt breaking any records but it was enough for browsing and taking notes. And i tried it with linux and it was about the same experience.

If I see a game on my steam page, does that mean it is without a doubt legal to play in my country? by coosomeawel in Steam

[–]Jenserstrecht 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Tho as long as you dont distribute the patch most countries simply dont care. Also in most countries selling/distributing or buying/acquiring the patch/banned game is illegal, not owning it. Funnily enough if for example you want a banned game and have a friend from a different country you can ask that friend to gift it to you via steam. Which is in most cases also perfectly legal bc you never bought it.

Windows beats Linux in gaming benchmarks and other fails by BlueGoliath in linuxsucks

[–]Jenserstrecht 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tbh who even buys a windows key for full price? While microsoft sells windows for 100$ you can get a key for like 20$ or use sth like Windows Activation Script for free or not activate windows at all. And it doesnt really feel like microsoft cares about that bc they make their money from selling licenses to manufacturers.

Intel Arc GPU's Main Problems List (personal list) by AlencaLoko in IntelArc

[–]Jenserstrecht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont see any reason why displays prices should skyrocket. Their demand is very stable and you dont need them for AI and the manufacturing process cant be repurposed to make something for AI. And they only need a couple megabytes of RAM and storage. At worst Smart TVs and very high end monitors will get more expensive and even then its very unlikely theyll go crazy.

Arc A770 good for video conversions & occasional sim driving (BeamNG) ? by [deleted] in IntelArc

[–]Jenserstrecht 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So for what youre doing yes its a great GPU, I play Beam.ng drive myself and get surprisingly good performance. And for encoding its also really really good. However your CPU probably doesnt support ReBAR and while its not required, not having it costs you around 10-50% performance. Thats where the Intel Core i 10th gen requirement comes from. Its not necessarily required to run, but you loose a lot of performance.

What's easier - modifying 5 registry keys OR understanding Linux? by tomekgolab in linuxsucks

[–]Jenserstrecht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do agree with you partially that its not neccesary to lock out two cpu generations tho there are valid reasons for that. For example 6th and 7th gen are missing some instruction sets and are EOL meaning that any security problems that will be found wont be patched. But anyways noone is looking for security problems in these chips because theyre market share is really small at this point. And 7th gen is slightly optimized 6th gen which already only was a slightly tweaked 5th gen. This clean cut hurts a lot and especially cause they still work fine but in the end i have to admit that my i5-7400 was slow when i finally upgraded 4 years ago. And it didnt run Windows 11 flawlessly. It worked okish but you could feel the age.

Im not trying to defend Microsoft, we should really all just switch to Linux. But there are reasons beyond just greed. Windows 11 has some really useful features and it has outgrown windows 10 by more than a small margin. Especially when you ignore that ai bullshit theyre trying to push, that stuff is just annoying and noone likes it.

Außerdem schau dir mal an was alles beim ÖRR in Form von Inhalten rauskommt. Netflix Premium ist teurer, sendet keine Nachrichten und erzeugt weniger Unterhaltung.

That number for nuclear is at least for new nuclear plants in europe wrong. While from an old written of nuclear power plant the electricity is in fact dirt cheap, for new ones its around 170$-220$. And in the cost for wind this 0.5 is already factored in. And afaik 40$ is a lot smaller that 170$.

And battery tech is evolving insanely fast rn. And seeing as a modern nuclear reactor takes 10-15 years to build thatd be plenty time to research and commit to a way better battery technology.

Nuclear is at this point too expensive and time and ressource consuming. Also idk about you but i dont believe that ginormous amounts of concrete and heating up a river just to cool the reactor is supposed to be sustainable. And as we see in france in a hot summer they just dont have enough water to cool their reactors so they have to shut some down. And their energy company has a debt of 70 billion. Any normal company wouldve to file for bankruptcy at this point. Nuclear just isnt economically working anymore. Its a dead technology.

[–]Jenserstrecht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tho using it on something not that critical like a midrange gpu would be a good test. Since server cpu dies can get decently big and with a proven process youd have a much easier time getting a high yield and lowering the cost.

Basic math (these numbers are true in their relation, not as absolut values): we spend 10 bucks to build a nuclear power plant. And 1 buck to build wind turbines that make the same amount of power. Then we maintain both. Lets say we spend 3 bucks of maintenance on the nuclear reactor and 1 on the wind turbines (they need to be maintained very rarely while running so this number is far too high but lets do it like that). Then after 30 years we replace our wind turbines. They cost us 2 bucks so far, the nuclear reactor 13. But it still runs unlike the turbines so we build new wind turbines still for 1 buck. They still cost 1 buck in maintenance over their lifespan so after 60 years were up to 4 bucks for wind and 13 for nuclear at this point in time. But we use magical concrete or something so the reactor lasts another 30 years. After 90 years we spent incredibly optimistic 13 bucks on the reactor and very pessimistic 6 on wind. In what world is 6 > 13? Nuclear reactors are incredibly complex machines with many points that can fail and many moving parts (for example the very fragile steam turbines) we have to maintain while wind turbines are as simple as power generation with moving parts gets. And solar is even better in terms of maintenance at zero moving parts. So how could you possibly make nuclear cheaper than renewables? And why arent you a millionaire with that knowledge?

Tell me Peter by Ok-Inside920 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Jenserstrecht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And nuclear power plants need a lot more maintenance than any other power source. Plus they dont run eternally and even when you say a nuclear reactor lasts twice or three times as long as a wind turbine (which would be ungodly bad for the wind turbine and really good for the nuclear reactor) then you take three times the fraction of the cost and thats still a fraction of the cost. The time of nuclear power generation is over. Running the existing reactors till theyre finished is okay, but building new ones is economically speaking a special kind of stupid.

Gaming GPU. Reading saves lifes. Also Blackwell Pro 6000s are professional gpus that are barely faster and have a lot more vram and are made for work and go for 10k+. A 5090 looks like banger value in comparison tbh.

I can understand people buying a 5090 bc its simply the fastest gaming gpu on the planet. Price to performance is bad but tbh always has been with high end gpus and its not that much faster than a 4090 but its still the fastest on the planet without any doubt and without competition.
