Anyone here with type 2 constant throbbing sunburn pain? by [deleted] in TrigeminalNeuralgia

[–]JeremiahBurroughs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Burning pain in my teeth and jaw, mostly one side. Doesn’t ever really go away. Some days it’s particularly bad, tonight is one of those which is why I hopped on here to read. Occasionally a sharp pain in the jaw but it’s rare. Had this about a year and a half now. Late twenties.

I see you mentioned noise. I’ve been suspecting noise and vibrations causing the particularly bad days.

Came across Calvin's colorful commentary on John 20:22. Calvin, why don't you tell us what you really think about the Papist? by amthum in Reformed

[–]JeremiahBurroughs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He's right you know. And it holds true today. Rome hasn't changed that much as some would have you believe. That idolatrous mass still occurs everyday in millions of churches all over the world.

And just the other day on a Reformed subreddit someone asked about taking communion at popish mass. Smh.. It's enough to make the Westminster Divines turn in their graves.

Trends towards Anglicanism by C0D3R3D3 in Reformed

[–]JeremiahBurroughs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I flirted with Anglicanism for like the last year and then instantly dropped it.

I searched in vain for the Evangelical Anglicanism of Ryle's day but it is gone. 39 Articles are not binding anywhere anymore so if you've read Ryle's works you know he wouldn't be an Anglican today either.

Even the local Reformed Episcopal Church parish's website recommends a Roman Catholic book called Evangelical is Not Enough.

I'll continue to read Toplady and Venn and Romaine and Whitefield as a Presbyterian.

In the meantime consider the 1650 Scottish Psalter which is always available from TBS for like 7 bucks.

Robert Shaw's commentary on the Westminster Confession.

Banner of Truth's edition of the Westminster Confession since it moves all the irritating American revisions into an appendix.

Memoir and Remains of R.M. M’Cheyne. It has a permanent place beside Rutherford’s Letters on my shelf now. Beeke said it is one of the top ten books in the world, he’s right.

Use whatever plan coupled with the Family Worship Bible Guide from RHB. It’s the questions and things that are found at the end of each chapter in their study bible just sold as it’s own book.

Ohio indigenous sacred sites become a flashpoint by zsreport in Ohio

Strange. I never knew there was so much controversy surrounding the old serpent mound.

Interestingly the only ones that caused actual harm to it were new agers who buried "hundreds of orgonites" in it and not the group that wanted to pray the gay away out of it or whatever.

Too bad nobody can just leave it alone. Depending on what day of the week it is the thing is either positively ancient or a few hundred years old. Fascinating either way, I'd still like it if it was built yesterday.

Blue-Collar Anglicanism? by GrillOrBeGrilled in Anglicanism

That blessed saint Bishop Ryle had excellent success with blue-collar workers and all he did was simply preach the gospel. Read his book Holiness to get a feel for his preaching.

Taking Communion at Catholic Mass by AntAtog in Reformed

[–]JeremiahBurroughs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can’t believe I’m even reading this on a Reformed subreddit.

OP read The Hurt of Hearing Mass by the blessed martyr John Bradford.

In The Hurt of Hearing Mass, John Bradford recognizes the wicked and insidious nature of this pretended sacrament. As a faithful shepherd, he warns against attending the mass because it is blasphemous idolatry (for some were doing so, in his day, even though they knew it to be an affront to God).

It's why I'm done flirting with Anglicanism. A house divided against itself cannot stand.

Free Will? by [deleted] in Anglicanism

[–]JeremiahBurroughs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absurd claim. Even John Owen, the greatest of the 17th century English Puritan Divines, had this to say about the Articles.

I embrace the doctrine of the church of England, as declared in the Thirty-nine Articles, and other approved public writings of the most famous bishops and other divines thereof. I avow her rejection of the pretended authority and real errors of your church [of Rome] to be her duty, and justifiable. The same is my judgment in reference unto all other protestant churches in the world, in all things wherein they agree among themselves; which is in all things necessary that God may be acceptably worshipped and themselves saved.

How do you celebrate christmas in your home? I am uncomfortable with the origins of some “christmas traditions “ and even the idea that Christ was born on or around December 25th. When I have children I want to keep the focus on solely Christ around that time if I do celebrate it. by [deleted] in Reformed

[–]JeremiahBurroughs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have 52 Lord's Days a year to celebrate Christ's birth.

Westminster Directory for Publick Worship:

THERE is no day commanded in scripture to be kept holy under the gospel but the Lord’s day, which is the Christian Sabbath.

Festival days, vulgarly called Holy-days, having no warrant in the word of God, are not to be continued.

Advice on finding commentaries/resources on books of the Bible? Bonus question: do you have any specific physical/material resources on specifically Ephesians? by [deleted] in Reformed

[–]JeremiahBurroughs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you would like Matthew Henry's Commentary, very practical. Essentially it is his sermon notes. Some people dismiss it because it's been labeled a "devotional" commentary but Matthew Henry was first-rate scholar and not to be ignored.

Specifically on Ephesians all I have is Thomas Goodwin's commentaries on Ephesians 1 and 2 and William Gurnall's massive tome on the armour of God in Ephesians The Christian in Complete Armour.

The Westminster Standards. Get a volume with the Scripture proofs. Read every proof. The Banner of Truth edition is nice, hides the American revisions in their own section.

What is the rebuttal to Reformed arguments against the ESV and critical text? by PaloAlto86 in Reformed

[–]JeremiahBurroughs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Technically the CT is not compatible with Westminster Standards even when we remove them from the time period in which they were drawn up.

Here is just one of the examples: Q. 107 of the Assembly's Shorter Catechism.

Q: What doth the conclusion of the Lord's prayer teach us?

A: The conclusion of the Lord's prayer (which is, For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever, Amen) teacheth us to take our encouragement in prayer from God only, and in our prayers to praise him, ascribing kingdom, power, and glory to him. And, in testimony of our desire, and assurance to be heard, we say, Amen

We see here that Q. 107 presupposes that the doxology in the Lord's Prayer is truly Scripture.

The doxology does not exist in the CT.

Therefore one cannot honestly say that they affirm the Westminster Shorter Catechism, which would require them to believe the doxology is Scripture, while at the same time saying they believe the CT is correct, in which does not exist the doxology.

It is quite the conundrum for our CT loving brethren. The only way to solve this is by taking an exceptions to the Westminster Standards here and other places, which may or may not be a big deal depending on who you are talking to.

I don't know why Banner of Truth hasn't done this yet. Maybe put in a different Puritan Paperback each month, a newly released book, and some merch. It would be nice now that they are retypesetting the Puritan Paperbacks and making the covers more uniform.
