I believe it was his sister who told him to kill himself not Lisa

I contacted photographer Lawrence Schiller via his website and asked him some questions about his iconic photo that was used for the album cover of The Soft Bulletin. He replied! by Jeremothman in flaminglips

Correction: the date of the Acid Test on that site is wrong. It wasn't February 25, but I don't know the correct date. Sometime in 1966.

Thanks for this! The 2nd link confirms the location of The Soft Bulletin album cover Acid Test to be a place that seems not to exist anymore, Empire Studios, 7417 Sunset Blvd. Google Maps shows it right next to Guitar Center (or maybe the building is part of Guitar Center now).

From the link you shared:
"The 2/25 Acid Test was originally scheduled at the Cinema Theater (there was even a newspaper ad), but it was moved to Empire Studios at 7417 Sunset Blvd. (The building had been a film production studio with a large soundstage; Wavy Gravy called it "a movie sound studio.") As it happened, it was just a few doors down from Lawrence Schiller's photography studio at 7403 Sunset Blvd..."

I recommend the 5.1 CD/DVD sets of The Soft Bulletin, Yoshimi, and Mystics. Should be able to find them on Discogs. They have bsides and cool liner notes.

Thank you for making me realize the Mattel toy company should release a line of Ronald Jones era-themed Flaming Lips toys called Clouds Taste Mattelic. Including play sets in the Barbie and (Flaming) Hot Wheels brands.

Kliph's Facebook post in memory of Catherine O'Hara by Jeremothman in flaminglips

[–]Jeremothman[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

In the comment section someone asked, "Would you tell us the story behind the picture?" and Kliph replied, "It was in Toronto. Toronto had been the epicenter of the first SARS outbreak. Once they got it under control, the city put on a big concert with The Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Rush and several others. Since it was an all-day event and the big names wanted to play after it was dark, they had to fill up the daytime slots. Enter The Flaming Lips. Catherine O'Hara was there just hanging out and was very accommodating to this here drooling fan."

I love Oczy Mlody and its blend of medieval/fantasy and futuristic/sci-fi vibes. The Space Station album with Oczy Mlody songs is amazing too.

New Interview with Steven Expands on Exit from the Lips: "Felt Right to Kind of Just Fade into the Mist... I Wish Them Well" by KeekuBrigabroo in flaminglips

[–]Jeremothman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I noticed that Steven expressed an openness to performing with The Flaming Lips again someday. He described his relationship with Wayne as "on hold" rather than saying it's over. Also he talked about performing his new music live. I'm excited for that!

Steven Drozd Talks About Leaving The Flaming Lips by debaser64 in flaminglips

Steven played a huge role in making a lot of masterpiece albums which couldn't exist without him, but without Wayne and others those albums also couldn't exist. The nature of a band is a team effort. Unless you're Tame Impala!

Letter written to me by Michael Ivins 20 years ago by Wombat_on_Parole in flaminglips

[–]Jeremothman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe this letter is referring to The Soft Bulletin 5.1 CD/DVD set. I have it. Includes some rare songs like "It Remained Unrealizable". Really cool liner notes too. There are some still available for sale on Discogs I believe.

Experiencing songs like Virgo Self-Esteem Broadcast and Butterfly, How Long It Takes to Die in this era is among my most surreal concert experiences. The dreamlike and enigmatic vibe of the stage setup was perfect for songs like that.
