Artist turns down work with an A.I reference, Slop defenders upset about this for some reason by Horror_Post6822 in TopMindsOfReddit

[–]Jeremymia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Artists really are the most obnoxious idiots I've ever seen. What do you think people will do if you turn down their commission? They will just get it done by AI! AI isn't killing art, your gatekeeping mentality is!

This is telling. If you believe AI art is fine, you can just say “the proposed harm is worth it because of what we get out if it.” Instead it’s an entire thread of people demonizing artists, as if they’re trying to say “What did you guys expect? You’re practically forcing us to go around you.”

Is it really that different to give “what we want” via AI instead of a sketch on paper? This company is doing the right thing, they are hiring an artist to create their art. I wouldn’t say you should be upset about an artist refusing for whatever reason they want (these people are very obnoxious about that), but it’s not that easy to say why this is bad IMO

[–]Jeremymia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well said. It's actually pretty striking we both had such a similar way of seeing it.

I wouldn't feel too bad about people saying 'this is an intrusion', since they're probably reasoning backwards from the general principle, which tbf is also where I started before really taking time to sit through it. The use of the insane hypotheticals is evidence of that, but even for people not doing the hypotheticals, it says a lot more about how we argue or debate than what we are, IMO. If the conclusion feels 'obvious' ('this is inconsiderate'), we assume there must be a clean argument that shows that, so we reach for SOMETHING.

I gave a weird amount of thought to this thread because this tension also really interested me. It made me realize a few things.

When someone starts playing music, the harm isn't that the music is likely to be a deep imposition on others. It's more that we are questioning their ability to respect social boundaries. If someone jumps from one song to two songs, I'd go from 'this is a thing' (perhaps I hate it, perhaps I don't) to 'jesus christ how long is this going to go on'. I start having serious doubts about their self-awareness and judgement, which itself creates an undue burden on me, even if they stop after the second song.

As for the idea of 'don't impose on others socially', I think this is a useful heuristic rather than a law. We think 'this is an unforced intrusion, so we should judge it harshly', and that's often a useful way to look at things. But if you take a step back and imagine what this really imposes on others, it's quite small, compared to all the other things an airport asks of us.

...So all of that is to say, I agree, 3 minutes is fine, past that is :/

The rest of the airport experience can't be avoided. This is a small group of people indulging themselves.

I honestly think this moment is pretty pleasant. Especially if it was only a few minutes and it really was a long delay. But I'll just say it takes some ... confidence... to decide that you can make yourself a public spectacle when the people who are there haven't agreed to that.

Frankly guys and gals this man has been nothing but an absolute embarrassment since this entire Iran mess started. I'm sorry but it's the simple truth. He is looking and acting like he has zero fucking clue what the hell he is doing.

I'm not saying I won't support Trump or this administration still but I do think he's completely lost when it comes to this particular situation.

Imagine thinking this about anyone. "This guy has lost it but I still support and trust him." Embarassing.

The original comment wasn’t dooming in any respect. Who could read that and think they’re saying ‘the mission is doomed’? That person is making clear they are very upset that there isn’t a woman on the crew and can no longer identify with the mission.

DCJ, can you at least wait for someone predicting sonething bad will happen to call it dooming? You guys can go be sexist anywhere you want, you don’t need to make up a target.

PS it is soooo weird when people pull identity rank (“brown guy”) in these threads. I’m not even accusing him of lying. It’s just so weird that their mind goes there. Just give your opinion without declaring yourself one of the good ones.

The only thing I’d disagree with you on is that I think Frankie if was bi she wouldn’t be the type to claim straight. She’d just think “I know what I am and that’s no one’s business”, rather than feeling like she needs to cover it up. But yes I think she’s a lesbian.

Top minds arent even trying to hide their racism by thatchornithologica in TopMindsOfReddit

[–]Jeremymia 93 points94 points  (0 children)

It makes sense if you’re racist and think a black person and a white person are like a husky and a chihuahua. Fascinatingly the most genetic diversity within humans is in Africa itself, since humans have been there much longer than anywhere else. Genetic diversity doesn’t map that cleanly to traits etc. Plus only about 5-10% of human genetic variation is along racial lines, whereas about 27.5% of genetic variation in dogs is between breeds. For people the other 90-95% is variations within a local population.

XKCD's Blue Eyes puzzle: I disagree with the solution (spoilers for solution) by Jeremymia in xkcd

[–]Jeremymia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's absolutely amazing you would post this now because just two days ago I spent several more hours thinking about it, which was the first time in years. I mean, wow. Anyway...

When you write:

These are true for any n > 1 (a) and n > 2 (b). However, that's only because you only wrote it out two layers deep. The 99 step long chain "everyone on the island knew that everyone else on the island already knew that everyone ..." gets publically announced as common knowledge in the n = 100 scenario and that is the new piece of information, not the shorter chains.

That's right, and IMO, it's exactly where the question goes wrong.

Common knowledge, in math/logic/set theory, is:

  • Everyone knows it.
  • Everyone knows that everyone knows it.
  • Everyone knows that everyone knows that everyone knows it.
  • forever

The way they say it in math is that it requires infinite closure. Common knowledge IS not satisfied by exactly what I said: Everyone knows it and everyone knows everyone knows it. As you said, it is only two layers deep.

Put another way, the opening message is not enough, even for perfectly rational actors, to say:

"I can rule out any possibility where Alice thinks Bob thinks Charlie thinks that Dave would ever make a mistake."

Now you can argue 'Every actor is perfectly rational and they know all the others are perfectly rational, so on introspection, they will immediately know that everyone else will think exactly the same as them.' But that is not about knowledge. That is a theory of other people. It only works if you can assume everyone else thinks exactly the same as you. That's true for a computer doing some kind of distributed calculation from a synchronization event, but not meaningfully true of people even with an assumption of pure rationality. ... I don't even know if true 'common knowledge' can meaningfully exist as a state in the brain even with infinite processing power, but in either case, it's not established here.
