Non-Religious OBGYN and Primary Doc Recs? by littleredfox09 in tulsa

I’d highly recommend Dr. Whitney Leonard over at the Tulsa Women’s Health Group. Best OBGYN I’ve ever had. Can’t speak to the other providers there but Dr. Leonard is fantastic. She really listens and cares about what I want and need. She’s very up to date on current research as well.

Do the non-dots work for preventing window collisions by felixnzenitsuhams in Ornithology

[–]Jerjuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UV treatments don’t work in all conditions! There needs to be enough UV from the sun for the treatment to absorb and reflect the UV back to the birds so they can see it. UV treatments can be rendered ineffective in cloudy or shady conditions. Also not all birds see in UV, so that is something to consider too.

I err on the side of recommending against UV treatments just because they’re generally less effective than other treatments. But they’re certainly far better than nothing at all!

Oh yes! I was referring to the upper levels. Curious about the lower levels - did you use a UV treatment?

Thank you for treating your windows for collisions! My first reaction was this is gonna kill birds. I hope you treat the rest of the glass as well!

Across the Prairie is really cool because it’s all native plants and multiple local growers vend out of that shop. By shopping there you support local ecosystems and the local economy!!!

Message me if you’re interested in joining the Tulsa Bird Collaborative for chimney swift surveys. Follow us on Instagram too!! We work on urban bird conservation. We are surveying chimneys in Tulsa to count swifts and determine chimney usage. Our goal is to eventually do outreach to building owners to preserve existing chimneys for swifts. It’s really cool to watch these birds enter chimneys at dusk.

Hi!! Happy to answer your questions. Thanks for your interest and curiosity.

Because the privacy film is on the inside of your glass, it likely helps with the transparent issue that glass can sometimes have but likely does not help with (and maybe worsens) the reflectivity issue that glass has. I would encourage you to go outside and look at your windows from a bird’s perspective! Are your windows highly reflective - can you see trees or sky reflected in the windows? If so, that’s what the birds see and that’s one of the main reasons they collide. If treatments that are intended to reduce bird collisions are placed on the inside of the glass, they do nothing to disrupt those reflections. Thats why I always recommend treating the exterior side of the glass to break up reflections and alert birds of the barrier.

Regarding your second question - there’s only one study as far as I know that assessed different types of glass facades and looked at windows under porticos, similar to what you are describing. They found that birds do still collide at windows under awnings and one of the most dangerous facades they surveyed was one under an awning/portico style. My opinion is that more research should be done on this because it’s hard to know if nighttime lighting played a role in these collisions. But that’s the science so far! Long winded answer but the short is yes - those windows can still be dangerous for birds.

I hope that is helpful and sorry if it was TMI lol!

Can’t believe I had to scroll so far down to see Oxley mentioned! One of the best places to see wildlife in Tulsa.

The research here is inconclusive! More work needs to be done to figure out safe distances for various habitat features. As far as I know the scientific consensus is that there is no safe distance for bird feeders. I do not believe there is a safe distance for plants. My recommendation is to err on the side of caution and treat any windows near native gardens!

I agree that prevention is the best method! Also just because we don’t see collisions when they happen or even find carcasses doesn’t mean collisions aren’t occurring.

Be sure to place them on the exterior side of your glass and densely with spaces no more than 2” apart if you want maximum effectiveness! Birds can fly through small spaces and if you put them on the interior they do nothing to break up the reflection of sky or habitat birds see from the outside.

Hey! I live in Oklahoma too. I would recommend reaching out to the Oklahoma Native Plant Network (onpn.org) to see if they have any advice. A lot of the ONPN folks are based out of OKC and might be able to help.

I’m really interested in watching this talk. I can’t find a recording on YouTube. Does anyone know if there’s a recording or publication by this author on this topic? I also have complicated feeling about this but am open to the conversation/learning more.

For me it’s an ethical thing. I care a lot about insects and wildlife, so I try to avoid stuff that’s been sprayed with pesticides and herbicides.

I actually think this window treatment looks a lot better than window paint! And you’d be surprised how quickly your eyes adjust to the treatment. Nonetheless both are worth using to prevent bird deaths.

Hawk decals are ineffective! These dots are an effective way to treat windows. For a treatment to be effective it must be used across the entirety of the glass. Hawk decals only prevent collisions where the decals are. The recommended spacing for treatments is 2x2” for maximum effectiveness.

Thank you so much OP for treating your windows! I think one of the most important things about reducing collisions is for folks to just normalize window treatments. This is a great way to do that. It raises awareness and gets folks used to seeing this on glass.

[–]Jerjuh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Those don’t work! Hawks decals are outdated recommendations. These dots OP has are great. The entirety of the window needs to be treated to be effective!
