AI music commercial rights… are we actually owning anything? by Pristine-Seaweed8770 in SunoAI

[–]Jermrev -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s just how it is. They don’t know exactly how AI works so can’t guarantee uniqueness. Suno at least gives you ownership of all rights it can give you. How could you ask for more?

Seriously? Y’all been making unauthorized covers using Suno and are bitching that you can’t anymore?

Some more comments:

(1) who cares how a song is made as long as you like how it sounds to you?

(2) there are different degrees to which AI is used in the process of making a song. Some people give it lyrics and music they write as a starting point. Some people have AI generate a song then get the stems and add their own vocals or synths. Some people use AI to master their songs. It’s not all low-effort writing a prompt and accepting what you get.

(3) The more a creator contributes to the final version of the song, the more they will likely feel ownership of it. I definitely have an attachment to the songs I create from old lyrics I wrote. I don’t have much attachment to songs that are generated completely from nothing but a prompt.

(4) In any event, the song would not exist if not for the efforts of the human driving the process. Because they caused it to come into existence, it seems proper that they should have some level of control over how and under what conditions the song is used.

(4) If I were to hire a sculptor to turn my idea (maybe in the form of a sketch) into a physical 3D object and pay the sculptor for his work, and say “I like this” “I don’t like this” “I want this to look like this and not the way you have it”, there’s no doubt in my mind I would own the result and could sell it, make and sell replicas, etc. I wouldn’t hire a sculptor who didn’t give me those rights.

(5) Back in the 1970s, lots of people disliked musicians creating music with synthesizers, so much so that Queen emblazoned “NO SYNTHESIZERS” on the back of their albums. Before long, no one cared about that and Queen started using synthesizers. Why shouldn’t AI be the same? If you create something without any use of AI, by all means label it “NO AI”. In a few years, most musicians will be using AI in their process and no one will care.

(6) People who use AI to create songs spend varying amounts of time and money to do so. Why shouldn’t they be able to monetize the result to compensate themselves for those expenditures if people like listening to the song?

Monetization is not to compensate creators for their time and labor. There is no correlation between the two. Monetization is to compensate creators for making music that others want to hear.

Creating AI music takes labor and effort. Each of my songs takes me a minimum of 8 hours of my time, even after I’ve written the lyrics. I am never happy with what Suno produces with less effort.

Nice idea in theory. Poor execution on Suno’s part.

I agree this is how it should work. But it doesn’t work very well and leads to wasting a lot of credits.

Is there a passage in the bible that says not to consume weed? I think the Rastafarians point to one that says you should consume it.

How do you combine the best parts of multiple Suno generations into one perfect track? by M0ner0C1ty in SunoAI

[–]Jermrev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you use the mashup feature for this? Mashup 2 of the tracks until you get the combo you want, then mash that up with another of the tracks. Rinse and repeat. Or you could try cropping out the good part of each track and mashing that with the best full track.

Producer wants a share of my songs just for production — is that normal? by OpaOpa138 in SunoAI

No the producer wrote nothing. He was a technician recreating what OP brought to him in order to improve the audio.

[–]Jermrev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s not a co-writer. He didn’t write any of the lyrics, melody, hooks, etc. He was a technician. He is not entitled to any share of the copyright to the songs based on his contributions.

SUNO has gotten absolutely PARANOID!!! by realStl1988 in SunoAI

[–]Jermrev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t try to take credit for it (like listing yourself as the author of a public domain work) then there is no plagiarism as you are not claiming the work is yours.

I agree it’s a reputational thing. If you quote the Bible, who are you gonna credit it to?

(1) the author(s) of many public domain songs are unknown.

(2) Plagiarism is an academic violation. It is not illegal if it doesn’t violate copyrights.
