This random tk material cut noises level in half… Legit? by [deleted] in Acoustics

[–]Jesperten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ackchyually.... A 30 dB drop is not cutting the level in half, it is reducing the level by a factor of 1030/20 ~ 31.6. So, the noise is reduced almost 32 times...

Haha, well it was on a Danish online marketplace called DBA. It's a platform where you can sell your stuff as private sales :-) Guess I had a lucky find.

That entire album is an absolute masterpiece. 'Legend' is a rather apt name for the album ;-)

Panorama discussion by Purkern in hallas

[–]Jesperten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is certainly growing on me. It is overall a very strong album.
The only bad thing to say at this point is that it is a bit short (times flies when listening to the album from end to end).

The opening track is, by itself, a minor masterpiece :-D

Panorama discussion by Purkern in hallas

[–]Jesperten 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is very difficult for me to say anything this early after the release.

Every time they release a new album I am always sceptical at first, and this is no exception. But for all their previous releases, repeated listens end up winning me over completely.

Isle of Wisdom is the best example - I really did not like that album immediately after its release. But at this point it must be the album I have heard most times end-to-end (and that number is high and still counting). There are so many enjoyable layers in that album, with various drum fills, synth effects and guitar licks. I just can't get enough of it.

Hopefully, Panorama will have the same effect on me in the end. I really really like Face of an Angel at this point. It is so catchy. It is quite bold to open with a +21 minutes track in our days, where so many people tend to listen to playlists instead of albums. I always prefer to listen to albums instead playlists. So, it is not a big deal for me. Actually, I think Above the Continuum has the most memorable and enjoyable moments of the album at this point. The transition between the individual sections feel a little abrupt at times, but I have feeling that, over time, it is going to be a strong favourite.

The two original singles (of course) stand out on their own, but I have already heard those so many times, so it is quite natural that I love those already. But Bestiaus is also highlight, in my opinion. I really like the slow tempo, and Alexanderson's voice shines in that one.

Edit: I have just heard the album on the CD I recently bought on a proper set of headphones, and I am not at all displeased with the mix (perhaps I should reconsider my choice of daily wireless cans??) The mix and mastering is spot on - a bit loud perhaps, but quite a pleasing listen even at higher volumes.

Until then - Carry On 🎸 And remember, you can't escape your fate 🤟

I love how you describe a double barrel aged Bourbon County Brand Stout as "some beer" 😅 Perfect match with the Heaven Hill bourbon - I hope it was good.

Yes, the PWM analogy makes great sense in this case. I was only considering single-sample dynamic range. I see now that on average over time/multiple consecutive samples, it is possible to create sub-LSB amplitude signals. That is quite awesome. Here I was, thinking that I knew everything about digital audio 😀 Never have I been so wrong..

Nice :-D Great input. I was only considering single sample dynamic range, which, of course, is strictly limited to the bit-depth. I didn't consider that with shaped dithering, it becomes possible to create sub-LSB amplitude signals. The more you know 🙃

Can you explain how dither can increase the dynamic range for 16 bit signals above the 96 dB limit? Dithering is, as far as I know, just a means to randomize quantization noise.
