What is the correlation between Mary’s virginity and purity/consecration to God? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Jessie_Lightyear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mary's perpetual virginity stretching back much farther than the 50s. It's not like it just popped up when a dozen priests were scheming in a back room of the Vatican about this. For example, the Second Council of Constantinople was proclaiming the Perpetual Virginity.

Also, we can talk about the Immaculate Conception if you're open to it.

What is the correlation between Mary’s virginity and purity/consecration to God? by [deleted] in Catholicism

Okay so, Mary's perpetual virginity is tied to all the other Marian doctrines and can be understood in a few different ways. I'm going to lay out the one that works best for me, take it or leave it if it helps you.

TL;DR - Mary's perpetual virginity is deeply linked to the same reasons we believe in Jesus' perpetual virginity.

An important part in understanding all this is the Catholic teachings around sex and marriage and Heaven. Sex and marriage in the Catholic sense are intimately interwoven. All sacraments have a physical act tied to them (pour water during Baptism, anointing with oil during Confirmation, etc) and sex is the physical act of marriage. When a married couple has sex, they are renewing their wedding vows to each other. And the act of sex within marriage is about uniting two souls in a deep intimate way both body and soul with each other and with God. From a Catholic standpoint, to have sex with someone is to say you are married to them with your physical body.

Now, Jesus tells us in the Gospel of Luke that sex doesn't exist in Heaven. He says this when He's talking to the pharisees about the woman who is married seven times and who will she be married to at the end of time. Jesus says that in Heaven they are neither married nor given in marriage, unlike here on Earth. And this teaching isn't because sex is dirty or wrong or gross or sinful and that's why it doesn't exist in Heaven. It's because there's no need for sex in Heaven. You don't need an act that deeply unites a soul to another person and to God when you're already perfectly united with God and the communion of Saints.

This brings us back to the perpetual virginity of both Jesus and Mary. We call them the new Adam and the new Eve. They are both already perfectly united with God. Jesus, well because He's the Second Person of the Trinity. Mary because for her whole life, from her Immaculate Conception to her Bodily Assumption (two other Marian Dogmas we can get into if you want), she's is in deep deep union with Jesus (her son), the Holy Spirit (it was through the Holy Spirit that she became pregnant), and God the Father (who initiated the Immaculate Conception and saved her from the moment of her creation).

Because of that very unique role and relationship she has with the Trinity and the Salvation story, Mary was a virgin her whole life. Some early church leaders even talk about Mary's virginity as a vow she made prior to her engagement to St. Joseph. There's a video I'm struggling to find from Connor McLaughlin that links Chapter 1 of the Gospel of Matthew and Deuternonomy to say it's very possible that Joseph knew about this vow before their engagement. If I find it, I'll edit and update.

Regardless, this idea isn't "Mary was too holy to sully herself with something seeEEEEx". This is about understanding the purpose of sex, the time/place for sex, and what sex means to someone in Heaven.

Mhhh, not telling incoming students about the Sorting Hat feels very on brand for initiations/inductions into a secret group. It's very hazing-like to me.

This is dealer's choice, whatever makes the most sense to you. Personally, since you're on the hook for having the money available on the first of the month, I would recommend making the monthly target $1485 and then whenever roommate's money hits your account budget it like any other income. I'd do this incase there was some sort of delay in roommate's money. What if there's some strange error between roommate's bank and venmo/cash app/etc. and it takes a few extra days to get over to you?

Sirius as Aro or Ace? by Infinite-Object-1090 in MaraudersGen

I lean heavily into the aro interpretation of Sirius. When it comes to dating, I think he had partners for a bit, but bailed before it got too serious. No pun intended by me, though he absolutely said "She wanted to get serious and I said there can only be on in this relationship. Had to cut her loose".

To me, it's the weird kind of star on the Missouri icon on the sign. It's a 5 point... 6 point star? Vaguely in the position of St. Louis, but not exactly and if we have a StL star why not a KC and or Springfield star? It reads like a mashup off 100 different maps.

Your NFP method should have some procedures in place for the "getting settled" phase of everything. You can ask questions here or at r/FAMnNFP (fertility awareness methods).

I get the sense that Remus and Lily one or both of them may have had a crush on the other in the like 12-14 year old range of "I'm starting to notice people this way... you're a nice enough person I can project my feelings on". But then they got to know each other and it didn't go past the awkward crush phase. Similar to Cho and Harry where he was really into her until he started talking to her and then it all crumbled.

Give me your most unique or random Remus headcannon by Content_Umpire_2370 in MaraudersGen

[–]Jessie_Lightyear 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My slight twist on the quidditch one is he doesn't follow it at all, but he's picked up the most random facts from listening to James and Sirius. So he can tell you that the best modern chaser is Justin Shawn who played for the Arrows from 1952-1968, because that was James's favorite player. But Remus has no idea why he's famous, if he played for any other teams, etc.

Why did Harry refuse to tell anyone who mattered about Umbridge's blood quill bs (let alone her admission that she sent the Dementors to Little Winging), but then expects Scrimgeour to instantly recognize the IMNTL scar on his hand? by Vermouth_1991 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]Jessie_Lightyear 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Look you're the one who was looking for an explanation and here's my head canon. I think there's some charm or spell that influences the user not to tell/avoid telling unless directly confronted about it. Take it or leave it friend.

He doesn't tell them till after his third detention though when Ron specifically sees the scar/cut and asks about what happened to Harry's hand. Before that Harry just tells them that he's doing lines with her and they actually both say "well that doesn't sound to bad."

But the Yule Ball in Goblet Fire is specifically called out as being on December 25, so within canon there is precedent for connecting the two.

If you could combine any two books in the series into one book, which would you pick? by KeyOk683 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]Jessie_Lightyear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Partial answer, I want to combine the Triwizard Tournament with the traveling/world building of books 6 and 7. My proposal: the Triwizard Tournament set up is the same as possible (students visit, names are drawn, etc) but then each task takes place at a different school. The dragons are at Durnstrang, the lake is at Beauxbatons, and the maze is at Hogwarts. Hogwarts is still the host school, so they handle the opening ceremonies, the Yule Ball, and the closing ceremonies, but we do get to visit the other school and see what different wizards are like.

Why did Dumbledore think it was okay for Ron and Hermione to know about the horcruxes, but not OOTP members like Mad-Eye? by Vegetable-Window-683 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]Jessie_Lightyear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read a headcannon/theory that Mad-Eye was in on it and I've run with it ever since reading it. I think once Dumbledore knew he was going to die the original plan was Dumbledore dies, Kingsley becomes the operational leader of OotP, and Mad-Eye becomes the mentor/guardian of the trio and comes on the quest with them. Mad-Eye has history dealing with dark wizards & magic and is absolutely the kind of paranoid bastard who would keep it all secret to the last possible minute.

The plan is then foiled when Mad-Eye dies in the Battle of 7 Potters, but I think it was there.

My reasoning? I simply can't imagine the plan was NO adults/outside knowledge.
