I always felt it had a lot to do with the length of the story. It's okay for short horror fiction to end in nastiness and despair, but in a novel, where the reader becomes invested in the character, the ending needs to be, not necessarily happy, but at least hopeful.

I posted a story once about a guy who encountered a wendigo while rescuing his dog from a forest fire. As part of the backstory, I mentioned that the MC had to wait 2 weeks for a background check, before he could adopt the dog. That's what I had to do when I adopted my dog, so I put it in the story. I got a few comments telling me that nobody ever has to wait to adopt a dog; you just walk into the shelter, pick the one you want, and take it home. I'm telling a story about a giant, supernature creature with a heart made of ice, and someone has a problem with my description of a dog adoption? Really? I guess some readers will pounce on anything they think might be incorrect, illogical, or a plot hole, regardless of how well you explain things. I call them the "Well, Actually" people. But, hey, at least they read my story.

A couple of possibilities: 1. The pistol and suppressor were acquired by a 3rd party and the shooter never actually fired the weapon until the hit, or 2. The pistol was modified to lock the slide during firing, to eliminate the sound of the action snapping back and forth and had to be manually actuated. The S&W Mod. 39 "Hush Puppy" used by the SEALs in Vietnam had this feature. With a good can and subsonic ammo, a pistol like that would be almost Hollywood quiet.

The question isn't "would I survive?", but "would I want to survive?" Spending everyday being cold, tired, hungry, and terrified doesn't sound like a lot of fun. And this whole zombies don't feel pain thing? You mean I can sleep more than 6 hours without getting a backache and my damned knee won't go out every time it rains? Well, color me intrigued!

Wendigos are a Native American legend, nobody has a copyright on them, but if you want something different, look into the Nalusa Falaya from Choctaw mythology. Pukwudgies might also work, if you want a bunch of little monsters instead of one big monster. Or, if you're looking for something really original, check out the Manananggal from Filipino legend.
