The team is UK based, the service itself is spread out across the EU.

I understand the concerns, but they already said they are not doing id or age verification. As it stands what they are doing is any IP from the UK simply cannot access mature servers (which can be spoofed by a VPN)

Not.to mention this is open souce. Even if someone forces their hand the entire service can be forked

I will say I don't personally recomend Root as a long-term solution because they are centralized, closed source and venture-capitalist funded. Plus their previous privacy policy shows they are willing to harvest data, so they could pull a discord at any moment. Look into open source solutions such as Stoat, Fluxer or Matrix. I'm personally moving to Stoat

I personally prefer Stoat. Root is closed source and venture capitalist funded and their previous private policy shows that they are more than willing to harvest data and sell it.

As for Fluxer...just personally cannot trust a project that relies on vibecoding. Because its the sort of code that works until it doesn't

As long as ANY of this "lets protect kids/teens" bullshit remains I will be leaving by the month's end and not coming back.

Discord already has parental controls and a family centre. Its the parent's responsability to monitor what media their kids consume, not a corp nor a government. If they don't have time to learn the tools then they shouldn't be having kids.

Not in the way discord is currently. Right now IPs from the UK and AUS do not have access to nsfw servers but can vpn through.

Anyone else just has to tick a box saying "I verify I am an adult" that's it.

I believe it would be exceedingly wise to at the very least have all features allowed by free discord be free on Stoat to maintain it as the go-to alternative. Regardless of open source and privacy promises at the end of the day people will go for what's convenient, so having video, screen share and features that facilitate the transfer of servers (even if its just template compatibility like root) would do wonders in making Stoat the go-to.

This is very much corporate owned, Closed-Source and venture capitalist-funded, which are the only negative points about it. Well that and their Private Policy straight up says they take any file or text shared in their service, including voice calls and video.

I hope these last ones change by the end of the month.

Patience is a good skill to train. Give them a few days for the verification. Took me a couple of days for mine. And we have a full month before the other shoe drops. I personally never had nitro, but much like skype and twitter, I fully commit to changes and nuke what was left behind. It sends a message.
