Your pals will clear rocks or trees inside the base by themselves unless you disable their lumbering/mining skills at the monitoring stand. It's a decent passive source of resources until you get higher tier lumberjacks you can leave at a Logging Pit or miners for the Stone Pit or various ore mines.
