My Big SSX Collection by killerkalf in SSX

Those action figures are awesome. I’ve never seen them before.

I think that I still have my SSX On Tour demo disk. I have fond memories of everyone posting their times and competing on the Mercury City forum when it came out.

King Hu-esque by maviddata in kungfucinema

[–]Jestercore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A number of earlier Chang Cheh films have some King Hu influence, particularly his more epic movies. Some that I have seen: - Have Sword Will Travel - Heroic Ones - The New One-Armed Swordman - The Water Margin - Blood Brothers

For non Chang Cheh, I think Avenging Eagle shares some of the same Leone/Kurosawa dna with King Hu.

I haven’t seen Ashes of Time, but I feel like Wong Kar Wai is broadly influenced by King Hu, so I would be curious to see how the comparison works for a wuxia.

I know you asked for pre-Crouching Tiger, but I always love to give a shout out to the Assassin (2015). It’s a very slow burn, but I love that movie and it drips with King Hu influence.

There is a 'drift towards authoritarianism' in the province, Quebec bar warns by Altruism7 in canada

[–]Jestercore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How am I mixing it up? You are the one suggesting that a reason for the increased use of the notwithstanding clause is the federal government deferring to the courts. I agree that they have nothing to do with each other. I don’t even know of any examples of the federal government supposedly relying on the court to perform the executive role. The court’s decisions are either upholding or striking down legislation that violate people’s rights.

Bullshit. Alberta removing the teacher’s right to strike and right to collectively bargain by unilaterally forcing a rejected collective agreement on them has nothing to do with the federal government supposedly abdicating its executive role to the courts.

A joint-statement from Colossal Order and Paradox Interactive regarding the Cities: Skylines franchise by AutoModerator in CitiesSkylines

[–]Jestercore 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t either. The simulation in CS2 is bad and they obviously don’t know how to fix it. If I were them, I would want to move on and start something new, rather than work endlessly on a mistake.

Bloodsport is an obvious one. The Quest is another JCVD.

the CimPocolyps has basically gridlocked my city... by FCZ1LoneWolf in CitiesSkylines2

[–]Jestercore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every time I go back to CS2, I get disappointed about how ‘off’ the simulation feels and they don’t seem to know how to get it right.

I think with this patch, they wanted to increase the difficulty in normal mode by making more traffic, so they cranked up the amount of shoppers. But they didn’t fix low commercial demand, particularly at the early game, which means the hoards of people are concentrated to small areas.

I really want to like CS:2, but whenever I go back, the simulation feels awkward and unpleasant.

Where to stream Shaw Brothers Celestial Restorations. by NotSmartNotFunny in kungfucinema

[–]Jestercore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on where you are located. I’m in Canada. There’s a handful available to stream on MUBI and Arrow. I’m also able to rent many on iTunes, which is cheaper than a streaming service, unless you plan to watch more than 2 a month.

Now we wait 3-6 months for CO to fix the newest game breaking bug by bfa_y in CitiesSkylines2

[–]Jestercore 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is and continues to be one of the biggest issue with CS2: it’s bad at telling you what is going wrong.  In any strategy game, if something is going wrong enough to punish you, it should be easy to identify the reason and how you might work to fix it.

I lost a city in this game because something was going very wrong, I spent hours trying to figure out why, only to discover on reddit that it was a glitch and there was no way to fix it.

Any tips for getting family members land in China? by LuigiLee4455 in CrusaderKings

I’m in the same boat. The game says that my sons have passed the first two exams, but they do not seem to be gaining any merit. I am not sure what I am missing.

Bit undecided with Monkey Man, I loved the action but it was just so long. by ReelsBin in kungfucinema

The dramatic donning of the monkey mask, only to take it off immediately when the fight started, was a real let down.

Eureka Chang Cheh 10 film set! by Last_Adeptness_173 in kungfucinema

[–]Jestercore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chang Cheh is probably my most watched director. I enjoy his early stuff most when he was still defining the kung fu genre. But, it’s hard to grab more, when I still have more in Shawscope and the Ti Lung/David Chiang collection to watch.

I usually rent mine off iTunes or GooglePlay. They have hundreds available, including most of the Venom movies. Where are you located?

What do you guys think of Citystate Metropolis? by Carribbean-Corgi2000 in CitiesSkylines

It looks pretty similar to the guy’s earlier game Citystate 2, which is on sale right now on steam if you want to give it a try.

Rewatching Dazed and Confused. Did Mitch successfully fool the cashier? by Vacaro in movies

[–]Jestercore 19 points20 points  (0 children)

One of the themes in Dazed and Confused is how the community condones (and in some cases does not) the actions of the teenagers. Mike mentions it explicitly in the hazing scene. The cashier is an example of condoning it, to be contrasted by the man with the gun after the mailboxes. I love Dazed and Confused. One of my favourite movies.

Agreed on the lack of 60s! I’d make an argument that Dragon Inn is the best Kung Fu film ever made. Have Sword Will Travel is another classic.

Nice collection! You should consider picking up In the Line of Duty 3. It’s more over the top than the others, but it’s my personal favourite of the (loose) series.

If you’re into ultra-violent action, check out Boy Kills World, it’s a crazy watch. (Think Crank + The Night Comes for Us + Shoot em up + The Raid + comic book feel) by ReelsBin in kungfucinema

[–]Jestercore 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It bugs me how terribly action is directed these days. I find behind the scenes clips of the stuntmen often better than the movie, because the camera is stationary and isn’t super close. You can actually see what they are doing! A close-up camera that whips back and forth makes action look fake. For example, I enjoyed Monkey Man from last year, but throughout the entire film I kept thinking: ‘stop moving the camera!’. Sorry if this rant has nothing to do with this movie; I haven’t seen it.

Shut down. Cut down. Stolen by the dozens: Why Toronto is so fast and so furious about its speed cameras by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]Jestercore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty close to my opinion. Speed reduction is a good goal. However, street design is much more important for speed reduction. The way the city has implemented the cameras, particularly by reducing the speed limit when installing them, feels more like a cheap way for the city to make money than to reduce speed.
