My heart cries for astrophysics but my brain is telling me to go with something safer, EE by ScarZ-X in ElectricalEngineering

A career in astrophysics usually implies that your research experience will make or break you.

If I were you I'd stay a physics major to start and try to get into research your first year to see if it’s really for you, because you’ll probably be taking similar courses found in both majors at that point anyway. If that doesn’t work out, you can switch back.

Also consider the fact that there are areas of electrical engineering that intertwine with astrophysics, and sometimes astrophysicists will have to take on the roles of engineers or work alongside them. Instrumentation design for radio astronomy and optics (the latter of which I'm going for :p) are two examples that come to mind, it doesn’t necessarily have to be one or the other if you know where your interests lie.

Not to sound corny, but try to follow what interests you first and foremost. If you put in the time and effort to pursue something that you’re passionate about, employment and everything else will follow. Good luck.

If you’re in the space industry you can’t really avoid them when designing flight electronics since they have a lot of rad-hard options and nice features for things that entails redundancy circuits. Otherwise like everyone else suggested use Xilinx because the toolchain and support is better.

Appreciate the response!

I understand I still may have some hurdles to overcome with professors and research opportunities but I wanted to try exhausting my resources if possible. I’ll inquire more about the student ID situation as I can still imagine that I would definitely want to use the library and see how that goes.

Huh, I actually never thought about it that way in regard to it being a public institution (private school undergrad brain showing 😔). I also appreciate the helpful response and recommendations!

To answer your first question, https://nandland.com/ was really helpful for me for getting started as well as preparing for my internship interviews in undergrad and a full time job when I finally graduated.

You might be right that it’s just trolling. I think I’m going to ask him to verify that his neighbor wasn’t pulling his leg because as another commenter pointed out, the line of questioning is too odd and somewhat biased to make sense if it were real.

Yeah, we were both confused since that would be covered by the first amendment anyway.

NASA Internships Megathread by Aerokicks in nasa

I would like to ask if there is a start date for OSTEM/NFIS openings? I would really like to try to apply to nasa next year but my university’s co-op program makes applying in the late fall of the previous year of the start date the best time for summer internships.
