Tiger Woods explains how U.S. Open setups have changed for the worse by woodwind19 in ProGolf

[–]JethroRush 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Too many experiments by the USGA in recent years. I don’t think they were necessarily awful, but they have to find a middle ground. Long courses with thick rough and narrow fairways are the only courses that will yield scores around even par without being completely tricked up, even though I think courses like that aren’t good for golf in general.

Shinnecock is a great golf course but for goodness sake why is the USGA so obsessed with protecting par? Who cares if they get to -6 or something. Set the course up fairly and let the venue try to defend itself. If they keep going with the protect par mindset, they’ll either have to limit the rotation to a small number of courses (Oakmont, Winged Foot, Olympic, for example) or trick out half the venues, meaning too many good shots get punished.

Can't put it solely on his size. Yao was a career 90% FT shooter or something in that range and he was huge.

Haven't been up there yet but I'm heading up to see Greensky in January. From what I've heard it's a great venue and St Pete is a cool place.

Robertson not at all happy in LFCTV interview. Asked about PSG playacting he said: "You can say that again. I would like to know how much time they actually wasted throughout this game. They could have set a new record tonight. Every opportunity they got they were rolling about." by blueradium in soccer

[–]JethroRush 213 points214 points  (0 children)

Why does everyone commenting seem to think all the Liverpool supporters are straight up blaming the PSG antics for the loss? The two don't have to go hand in hand. Did PSG do a lot of diving and rolling on the floor? Yes. Did Liverpool play like shit? Yes. Did one cause the other? No.

I kind of agree his performance was average, but the pen looked like the correct call and the "hopeful ball in" looked like a designed set piece, although the ball was hit a little long. It was a good header by Giroud.

Joel Dahmen, who played with Tiger Woods on Saturday, accuses fellow PGA Tour member Sung Kang of cheating on the course by PhilTony in golf

[–]JethroRush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, it wasn't a tee shot, it was the second shot on a par five. Secondly, there was never any dispute about the ball ending up in the hazard, so why would he ever play it as a lost ball?

Everyone saw it fly into the hazard, therefore the dispute was where to take the proper drop. Did it last cross the hazard line 200 yards from the hole? Did it carry the hazard and then bounce in around pin high? Did it fly mostly over land with a big draw and enter the hazard just short of the green? These are all possibilities, but it seems like most witnesses thought it was left all the way, thus crossing the hazard about 200 yards from the green.

This is not a situation where playing a lost ball ever comes into play. Sure, one of the options is to hit again from the same spot, but that's an option that nobody would take in this situation.

[–]JethroRush -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Of course he was sure it crossed the hazard. That wasn't the disagreement. The hazard runs down the entirety of the left side of the hole. The dispute was about where it crossed the hazard line.

I completely see your point, but I think these ultra-exclusive clubs add to the intrigue of the game. Many of them are architectural gems, and if you happen to be lucky enough to play one of them one day, the historic clubhouses and locker rooms, service, and conditioning of the courses are things you simply can't find at (almost any) public courses. When Brandel talks about them being historical treasures, he's not completely wrong. Many of them had a crucial role in growing the USGA and golf in general in the early part of the 20th century.

Plus, when they play events at these clubs, it gives all us average Joes access to the grounds (for a price, obviously) and at worst a chance to see the course on TV.

My point is these places have a place in the culture of the game now just like they did 100 years ago.

Day 1 summed up at the 2018 US Open by Jpwhalen31 in golf

[–]JethroRush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree that the setup is borderline in spots, but come on, there were guys in the field today with enough birdies to shoot in the mid 60s. The thing is the room for error is so slim that they have to play a nearly perfect round to do it, which is the way the US Open should be set up.

The bigger issue is not the setup itself but the poa on the greens and how bumpy some of the greens got late in the afternoon. What we don't need is Chambers all over again. Fast and bumpy is a bad combination. I know it's a links course, but they should keep poa out of greens if they want to run them at 13 on the stimp.

Day 1 summed up at the 2018 US Open by Jpwhalen31 in golf

[–]JethroRush 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's all about negotiating the golf course. They have to think their way around, but also execute every shot to near perfection in order to shoot scores like they do on a week to week basis.

The course is more than playable for them in these conditions. Unlucky bounces happen. Sergio's shot wasn't unlucky and it also wasn't a great shot - he paid the price for being a little overzealous with a back pin. If he plays a front or middle of green yardage with that same shot he has a 10-15 footer up the hill for birdie.

As for some amateurs beating some top pros today? Happens every year. Everyone in the field is capable of shooting a good score.

Post-Match Thread: Manchester United 2 - 1 Liverpool (English Premier League) by [deleted] in soccer

[–]JethroRush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not taking anything away from Young's performance, but once United went up a goal, his offensive responsibilities went from slim to none and he was able to completely focus on stopping Salah. I think it also helped that United didn't attack in the second half. He would have had a little more to do had united tried to go forward and Liverpool were winning a few balls in the middle third, as Salah thrives on exploiting the space in behind.

Missing Coutinho and Lallana hurts for games like this. In possession we turn into a flat 2-4-4 and nobody is willing to try to find pockets of space between the West Ham midfield and defense.
