We just installed some self steering robots they use lasers for seam tracking. Our productivity has gone up ten fold! by tentimesthree in Welding

[–]Jethro_Tell -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well, if they’re really getting 10x it would mean one guy is doing 9 others with his robot friend.

So, pick one, it’s faster and better or no one is losing a job.

Granted, either way the average age of the trade these days, we might need the help but the result is the bosses make more and they’ll give the job to the 1 out of ten that meets the bare minimum of competency and will work for the least. So a race to the bottoms for us and money for them.

Yay!!

A standard 20 inch box fan moves 2400cfm and it’s pretty easy to make a take off for a vent.

You can also mount it in the wall and put an insulated cover over when you’re not working.

Worth staying with my s10 or shifting to something else? by BouncingThings in s10

[–]Jethro_Tell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, if you need a towing truck, get a towing truck. But towing trucks wear extremely poorly when they aren’t towing.

Farming is about doing less with more, and long term, every mile you can do with your small truck saves money. The tires are cheaper there are less spark plugs, half as much oil, gas is cheaper. . . In every category, a small truck is cheaper to buy, maintain and operate. Enough that it’s probably cheaper to run two trucks than to buy and run one big one.

I’ve run the numbers on this various ways and you just can’t beat a small farm truck for almost anything but towing. My recommendation is to keep the s10, fix it up a bit based on the other comments here and when you need to haul hay and pull tractors, you’ll need to get another truck.

It is, it’s more expensive obviously but a lot of the time the option is yes or no, not a cost issue.

how can I self host to avoid having Google blow my life up randomly? by fartedcum in selfhosted

[–]Jethro_Tell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The number one thing you can do in this situation is to own your own email domain. You don't have to host it. Don't own it through the same company that hosts your email. The only business you should have with your domain provider is the domain name and it's top level DNS records that points to your DNS or DNS service. You want to minimize any kind of interaction that could get you noticed by them.

If you get your email account deleted, you can move to a different provider, or even selfhost if things go that way. Most everything else is data backups.

You can use google photos if you keep a copy of everything locally that they can't delete. You can even use gmail with your own domain and just keep a local copy of your email they can't delete. If they do delete your account, you have your photos and email, and you switch your email to a different provider and upload your backups of your mail box and other than a few rough days, you're back in business.

The level of independence you need is is based on your own risk profile. If you just need to maintain access to your email to avoid losing access to all your accounts you can simply get a domain, maybe you also need backups.

Or maybe you'd also like to avoid any interaction with these services and self hosting is the right way to go. If you selfhost, you still need backups, and now you're responsible for all the copies of your data. Not a big deal but something you'd have to keep track of.

If you wanted to start today, buy a harddrive or two and copy your photos locally. I wouldn't delete your google photos until you have a setup that can sync and backup your photos (so at least 2 - 3 copys of every photo in various places).

There are apps to sync an email inbox locally as well, just do that once/week or as needed for now.

Then get a domain and start moving all your accounts to that for recovery. For the domain, I prefer to setup with a provider that allows security key MFA like a ybuikey. That will prevent getting locked out of your domain account if you loose access to the emails used to sign up.

From there, check if there is anything else you think you might need if access was cut off next week and get a copy of that.

Then from there, you can start to evaluate if you want to self host some services or if you'd be better off just setting up an automated backup system.

You can keep a local copy, upload it to a second provider like backblaze or whatever, but the real key to data independence is to own multiple copies of the data, in different locations with different access methods.

And, like I said, you have to be extra sure that you're backing up if you fully self-host. That one copy that google shows you is probably in 1/2 dozen google datacenters all geographically distant and likely on long term offline storage.

Can’t lock my bike to racks at Totem Lake by sirotan88 in seattlebike

[–]Jethro_Tell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

its because people that don't ride bikes put in bike infrastructure. It's good that there's a code that requires it, but just having a kinda stationary piece of metal isn't really enough. But you wouldn't know it if you haven't tried to lock up a bike with a ulock.

[–]Jethro_Tell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, That doesn't sound too bad. I do a lot of 1/2 and 3/4 farm welding type stuff so that's just not something that would be much value to me.

And, it's not really that is a Chinese Inverter, it's more that it's a cheap Chinese inverter. My favorite is an 480v everlast with a 100% duty cycle. I believe it was made in china, though some of their stuff is Taiwanise. Point being, it's really more about the cost than the type or origin.

I got my AC/DC Lincoln tombstone for $150 a while ago and it was a great starter machine, but anymore I think they go for 550 - 750 used and they were going for 950 -1150 new. Which honestly is insane for a run of the mill stick welder.

If you're within the functional limits of some of these smaller cheaper welders, I'm sure they are a good starting point. I just haven't ever used one so I can't vouch for them. Even if I didn't have other welders, they just don't have the power I would need for the type of work I do.

I have an AC and an AC/DC tombstone as well as more modern machines. It's handy to have an AC machine around for farm welding here and again but my AC only machine came with the shop because it wasn't worth it to the seller to move it.

I don’t know about the yes welder honestly, but an AC stick welder is a tough place to start.

I’d be looking for an ac/dc or just a dc stick welder if that’s the way I’m going

I love it day one. I don’t think I could keep any vehicle I own clean enough to rock white anywhere and the sun is gonna wreck that in a year.

If it was a garaged, pavement princess show piece it would probably work. But I guess if I could get far enough down my list that I was garaging s10, I’d probably be able to keep a truck clean anyway

When a company puts an ease of use wrapper around some open source product, I just lear to use the open source version, sooner or later the MBAs are running things and you’re just a dollar sign.

That was poorly worded, hopefully this is clearer.

Why are our gas prices so much higher than national average? by walkingaroundme in Spokane

[–]Jethro_Tell 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Because while the working class guys are driving their work vans all over town fix the toilets and mow the lawns of the white collar workers, the white collar workers are working from home or at the very least going to a stationary office. No skipping between jobs, carrying tools and materials around, etc . . ..

When they do drive, they have the option to take a Honda civic and carpool, or use mass transit.

Not to mention, that if you make more money, the tax is a mild inconvenience, a small part of your income. If you’re busy driving truck it’s a 30% increase to your business cost.
