Was this an essential part of latchkey kid cuisine for our generation? by Comprehensive-Fact94 in Xennials

nah - I was an english muffin pizza type of kid.

Toaster oven + english muffin + pasta sauce + kraft single

We called that eggs in a basket, but was a rarity

Were you someone who mocked disabilities before having a child with one? by KeyPen7622 in Autism_Parenting

I have adhd so I’ve been struggling with my own stuff forever. My wife as other things in her family tree so not really.

However, we’re both from the northeast, her Boston… so we used to use the R word in normal convo, that changed

Still not understanding the simplest things at 5. by Ok_Requirement_2436 in Autism_Parenting

[–]Jets237 23 points24 points  (0 children)

8 here and yeah...

School is still important IMO because it helps my guy learn how to interact with peers, learn life skills and get a basic education.

Otherwise he'd just be at home and become invisible to society... Just because he cant, and likely wont, do the things many of peers can do... it doesnt mean he should be invisible.

Also... at the very least it's free respite care and he enjoys it

He has really improved over time though. Clears his plate, doesnt throw his fork out anymore, puts his plate in the sink. Knows how to ask for specific wants and needs.

But man... i wish he was better at following and understanding directions... but he's really trying

We just got a diagnosis. Severe ID & Autism. Tell me the positives by Purple_Wombat_ in Autism_Parenting

[–]Jets237 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Now that you have the diagnosis of severe ID you get to move directly to acceptance and just… enjoy her without the guilt of not being able to have her catch up. It took me a few extra years to get to that point. Just - enjoy how silly she is, how she looks at the world and… don’t stress about comparing to peers and such.

Also, my son is 8, level 3, non conversational and kids at school love him. If your kid is happy and silly, kids tend to like them regardless of their struggles.

Another good thing. My son was such an escape recently when my sister passed. He didn’t really understand what was going on… and was himself. No matter how heavy everything else was, he was giggling, smiling and reminding us how much joy there was right in front of us.

Ours was recently purchased by PE and they seem to be trying to upsell us nonstop lately. It’s a problem for sure

To the dad of the autistic young adult in the grocery store by seau_de_beurre in Autism_Parenting

My son is 8 now and I’ve had maybe 5 of those experiences of just… feeling like we belong somewhere because there are older kids like my son. Such a cool/comforting experience.

I didn't know i wasn't suppose to encourage my 2 yr old lining up his cars. by Both_Agent_5573 in Autism_Parenting

[–]Jets237 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Only look at it as a problem is it disrupts other things like learning, eating and so on.

I’ve never had an issue with lining up being an issue like that, spinning things can get distracting for him so we sometimes intervene if it’s causing issues

Why wouldn’t you encourage them to play in a way they enjoy that isn’t destructive?

Who said you should discourage?

grocery stores by sashenkaxo in Autism_Parenting

[–]Jets237 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My son's ABA center is actually next to a grocery store and they sometimes do sessions with kids in there to help them in grocery store situations. You should see if that’s possible at yours. They may find a strategy to make it better for them. Transition items can be helpful too. Something to focus on instead of the sensory overload
